Played Chalk Mountain in Atascadero Thursday at 10 AM. Played with a local that walked? Was close to 100 degrees when we teed off. Fairways were really full with a green mat of kikuyu grass. Even being only 5,900 yards from the white tees it plays more like 6,500 lots of up hill and downhill fairways and with the kikuyu no roll out fairways it was long. Greens were in good shape and bunkers were hit and miss but most playable. If you missed fairways you were hitting out of either dirt or worse long kikuyu which playing ball down is hard. With a bad knee I really got a workout claiming up and down to many tee boxes (they were in good shape also). If like me 210 is a good drive this is a really hard course, guy I played with drove over 250 most of the time and he had short irons into greens and had a much eaiser round. Not a very busy during the week course and one you may not score low on but well worth the time and money if up that way.

Local "Munish" course in pretty darn good shape. Scenic central coast mountain setting on a very hilly piece of property. $25 after 2PM, was well worth it, however I think they charge just as much for the cart. After walking it I think they could charge even more, LOL. It is quite a workout. Course is pretty lush right now, ball sat up nice and I had no bad lies. I wasn't in any sand traps but I don't remember seeing many. Greens were all smooth and medium fast. It has some quirky, semi blind holes, that without a cart made it extra challenging for a first timer. Don't be lazy like me, walk up the sixth hole to see where to hit it. I played what I thought was a straight shot down the middle and never found my ball. Some of the fairways are pretty tight and tree lined. The back nine is one decent golf hole after the next over some very hilly terrain. Now is a good time to play it as it can get awfully toasty out here in the summer and the course conditions may suffer. It's nothing spectacular, but well worth it if in the area.

Played chalk Mountain 7/13 at 10:30 $52 to ride. Played by myself so had the course to myself most of the day. Nice fairways for sure, ball sits so nice the 3 wood even got in the air. Not much rough but unplayable vegetation off many fairways. I had played here 10 years ago and can say it is a lot nicer now. Fun holes and a lot of up hill, side hill challenges. Bunkers were not the best but playable. A couple of holes need to drive up on and find the right green for sure before you tee off if your new there. My best shot hit the pin and stopped by hole, just wrong green, that was hole #12, that one needs a little look see before you tee off. I was very happy with the course conditions as I did not expect them to be as good as they are.,

Walked the Blues (6299/70.5/123) in slightly over 3H. 95, clear and muggy did make you want to play @ a leisurely pace. $18 to walk super twilight on the SLO Co. card. Kikuyu throughout except for the greens. Lush this course is not. Quirky and very hilly it is. But it has a decent amount of fun holes to play, and $18 uncrowded on a weekend afternoon is a solid deal. Challenging layout to walk. Rarely a level lie on this course after you leave the tee box. Numerous holes where shaping shots would be beneficial around mature oaks. Tees good coverage and were okay maintained for divots. Fairways good coverage for kikuyu. Mostly lush with some thin spots. Rough mostly mowed down to 2-3". Mixture of weeds and multiple different grasses, very playable. Hardpan if you get too wide of the fairway. Sand traps more thin dirt but okay maintained. Just thinner than they should be. Greens smooth but were at best medium speed. Very undulating with few ball marks, they held irons well. This is an "old school" course. Basic gas powered golf carts, definitely no GPS. Customer service was excellent, quick efficient check-in. Friendly Marshall out patrolling. No on course services. Once you leave the tee, they only have old school 100/150/200 yard markers. All grass range is okay. Recommended as a deal for the price.

Matched up with Everett, Nathan and Kane, excellent group to play with. $24 to walk on the SLO Co card. Did something I have never had to do before. Walked the front and had to take a cart ($12) on the back. Temp was too much on a hilly course for me to walk 18. Quirky, very hilly and challenging layout to walk. Rarely a level lie on this course after you leave the tee box. Numerous holes where shaping shots would be beneficial around mature oaks. Tees good coverage and were well maintained for divots. Fairways good coverage for kikuyu. Mostly lush with some thin spots. Rough mostly mowed down to 2-3". Mixture of weeds and multiple different grasses, very playable. Walked the Blues (6299/70.5/123) in 3H, 45M on an overcast, breezy afternoon with temps in the high 50's. Used my "free" round that you get at each county course on the SLO Card. Numerous holes where shaping shots would be beneficial around mature oaks. Very hilly and challenging course to walk. You rarely have a level lie on this layout after you leave the tee box. Tees winter thin with good coverage and were well maintained. Fairways winter thin and had good coverage for kikuyu. Rough a mixture of weeds and multiple different grasses, mostly mowed down to 2-3". Very playable. Sand traps decently maintained, but more thin with patches in each trap that had as much sand as I would prefer to see. Greens putted better than they looked. Kind of an off green, but putted medium speed and were mostly smooth/firm. Very undulating with few ball marks, they held irons well. The customer service was excellent, quick efficient check-in. Friendly Marshall out patrolling. No on course services. All grass range is okay. Once you leave the tee, they only have old school 100/150/200 yard markers. Very basic gas powered golf carts, definitely no GPS. Somewhat quirky layout. But overall, the playing conditions exceeded expectations, better than I have experienced here previously. Pleasantly surprised with this local muni tucked away in the foothills. Walked solo with my fiance in 3 hours, went out as dew sweepers. It reminded me of Hunter Ranch meets Laguna Seca. Interesting shot values and a great value, can't wait to come back and challenge the 78 first time seeing it from the tips.

I played one of my least favorite courses on the Central Coast today, and I was pleasantly surprised. First, I bought a small bucket of range balls to warm up and they all looked brand new. Second, I don't remember the course ever being in better condition, and I've been playing it for 30 years. There were few bare spots anywhere, the rough was manageable the the greens putted clean and true. Finally, at the price I paid ($18.00 since I have the SLO County volume card) it was indeed a bargain. And after several days of temperatures in the mid to high nineties in Atascadero, the high today of 78 was very pleasant. I look forward to playing match play against Chalk Mountain next week. The round I played today was practice in preparation.

Walked the Blues (6299/70.5/123) in 4H, 10M on a sunny, breezy afternoon with temps around 70. Played on their week of B-Day special, thanks Chalk Mountain! Played 9 with Doug and Pat, both 86 year olds who were delightful playing partners. First time here in 7 years. VERY hilly and challenging course to walk, especially in windy conditions. You will rarely have a level lie on this course after you leave the tee box. The tees were reasonably level, had good coverage and were well maintained. Probably the best part of the course. The fairways were decent. Good coverage for kikuyu. The rough is well, pretty rough. Mixture of weeds and multiple different grasses, mostly mowed down to 3" relatively close to the fairway. 10 yards off many fairways, it looked like the rough had not been mowed or maintained in months. Calf to almost waist deep, almost certain lost ball and no way to play it even if you found your ball. The sand traps were mediocre. Mostly thin, with patches in each trap I was in that I would call good. The greens looked good, but putted medium slow to slow. Very undulating with few ball marks, they held irons well. Numerous holes where shaping the shot would be beneficial. The customer service and range facilities were both okay. Once you leave the tee, they only have old school 100/150/200 yard markers. First time in years I have seen gas powered golf carts on a course. Overall, the quirky layout has more good holes than bad... but they have several holes here that I would call funky. Too many for one course. At best average playing conditions coupled with a below average layout means that it's unlikely I'll be playing here for at least another 7 years.
