Walked the Blacks (6360/71.0/123) in 3H, 45M early morning for the SLO Card rate of $27. Played with the MB Mens Club, Mike, Larry and Jim, nice guys to play with. Overcast and fairly calm in the 60's. Kikuyu tees just okay with many tees needing divot attention. Kikuyu fairways winter thin and firm. Mostly kikuyu rough mowed down low. Winter thin and some areas had been recently vericutt. The few sand traps on this layout were well maintained with fine, brown dirt/sand. Smallish poa annua greens putted medium fast speed and rolled nicely. Mostly firm but still held irons well. Almost never any on course services here, COVID or not. No GPS on the basic carts, small driving range that is adequate. Customer service was excellent, quick efficient check in, friendly starter. Recommended, solid, fun to play old school layout.

Walked the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in 4 1/2H mid morning for the SLO Card rate of $27. Played with the MB Mens Club. Foggy, overcast and breezy in the 60's. Kikuyu tees decent with good coverage, but more unfixed divots than usual. Kikuyu fairways nice to play from. Mostly kikuyu rough fairly lush and thick. Very little roll and will grab your clubs trying to escape. Only a few sand traps on this layout and they are well maintained with fine, brown dirt/sand. Smallish poa annua greens putted medium speed and held irons well. Almost never any on course services here, COVID or not. No GPS on the basic carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. Walked the Blues (6083/69.9/119) in 4H, 15M midday playing with the Morro Bay Men's Club. Played with Amid, Jim and Gene, nice guys to play with. Clear, sunny and windy in the 60's made for challenging conditions. I wasted a well above average ball striking day on a day I putted and chipped well below average. Since the temp is almost always between 55 and 80 here, the playing conditions are remarkably consistent year round. MB is among the most unusual courses I have ever played from a difficulty standpoint. If you looked at the scorecard yardages and I told you there were no water hazards, only a few greenside traps, no fairways traps and that on most holes you would have to work at it to go OB or lose a ball, you think really easy course. But the hilly terrain, huge trees, kikuyu, often windy conditions and the small, sloping greens give many players as much as they can handle. Many of the short holes play uphill, into the prevailing wind or both and end up playing anything but short. And several of the longer yardage holes play easier because they are straight downhill, downwind or both. Very deceptive holes based solely on yardages. Kikuyu tees well maintained with good coverage. Kikuyu fairways nice to play from. Mostly kikuyu rough fairly lush and thick. Very little roll and tough to chip out of. Few sand traps on this layout and they are well maintained. Smallish poa annua greens putted medium speed and very receptive to holding well struck shots. Greens putted slower than normal and they looked. I never adjusted well to the slower speed greens. Almost never any on course services here. No GPS on the basic carts, small driving range. Customer service was excellent, quick efficient check in, friendly starter. Fun, solid, old school layout, Recommended.

Kikuyu tees were nice with good coverage. Kikuyu fairways were very nice to play from. Mostly kikuyu rough was fairly lush and thick. Very little roll and will grab your clubs trying to escape. The were soft, you could back up well struck approaches. Almost never any on course services here. No GPS on the basic carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. Clear, sunny and breezy in the 70's made for great golf weather. Kikuyu tees were nice with good coverage. Kikuyu fairways were very nice to play from, good coverage, fairly lush. Mostly kikuyu rough was fairly lush and thick. Very little roll and will grab your clubs trying to escape. Only a few sand traps on this layout that rarely come into play, but they were well maintained. Smallish poa annua greens putted medium fast, were mostly firm, but held irons well. Still showing the remnants of punching, maybe a week from being excellent again. No GPS on the basic carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. Customer service was very good, quick efficient check in, friendly starter. Almost never any on course services here. Recommended with no frills in mind going in.

Nice with good coverage. Kikuyu fairways were very nice to play from. Mostly kikuyu rough was fairly lush and thick. Would quickly kill your shots, very little roll and will grab your clubs trying to escape. It was deep enough that I stepped on someone's forgotten LW behind 18 green on my way to the parking lot after the round. Only a few sand traps on this layout. Was not in any, but they were well maintained. Smallish poa annua greens putted medium fast but were still showing the remnants of punching. Not their normal smooth here, probably a week from being back to normal. Almost never any on course services here. No GPS on the basic carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. Customer service was excellent, quick efficient check in, friendly starter. Recommended, no frills but one of the best muni's around IMO.

Walked the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in slightly over 4H super twilight for $15. Played part of the round as a 4some, part as a 3some and part as a single. Foggy, 65 and calm. So foggy I could often not see my playing partners the last few holes, much less the green. Kikuyu tees were the weak link. A couple were closed for reseeding, which is needed. Okay overall, but most of the par 3's were chewed up with divots. Kikuyu fairways were lush and nice to play from. Mostly kikuyu rough was fairly lush, not high but thick. It would quickly kill your shots, very little roll, one bounce and stop. Only a few sand traps on this layout. Was not in any, but they were well maintained. Smallish poa annua greens putted medium fast and were smooth. You could make irons stop with large ball marks on these greens. Usually no drink cart here. No GPS on the basic carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. Customer service was excellent, quick efficient check in, friendly starter. Recommended.

Walked the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in 4H, 15M with Paul, Austin & Kenny, very nice guys to be matched up with. $15 to walk super twilight is an excellent value. Overcast, foggy and around 60 with an ocean breeze made for challenging golfing conditions. Really fun, old school course. Constantly up/down hills. While there are some shorter holes to start, this is a deceptively long layout because of the hills, usual 1-2 club ocean breeze and the kikuyu. That combination makes this this one of the longest 6300 yard courses I have ever played. Kikuyu tees were mostly lush. Good overall, but most of the par 3's were chewed up with divots. Kikuyu fairways were fairly lush. Not much roll on these fairways. Mostly kikuyu rough was fairly lush, not high but thick. It would quickly kill your shots, very little roll, one bounce and stop. There are only a few sand traps on this layout. Was not in any, but they looked okay. Smallish poa annua greens putted medium fast and were smooth. You could make irons stop with large ball marks on these greens. No tiers, but hard to believe how much break you need to play on a couple of greens until you see a few putts or chips rolling from certain directions. Greens on 5/11/12 come quickly to mind on how sharp they can break toward the bay. I played 6' of L/R break on a 30' putt from behind the hole on 11 and after putting it 4 times came to the conclusion that I underestimated the break by about 7-8 ft. Customer service was excellent, quick efficient check in, friendly starter. Usually no drink cart here. No GPS on the basic carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. I frequently use almost every club in my bag on this course. Recommended.

Played Morro Bay today with the modified coronavirus rules. The course had an outdoor set up to purchase green fees and special modifications to all the holes so one did not need to take the flagstick out nor reach into the hole to retrieve the ball. We had one threesome 9 holes in front of us, another threesome 4 holes behind us. Total of 9 golfers on the whole course. Played the round in just over three hours. Great to get out after being housebound all week.
