I played here yesterday. They offer a birthday deal of cart fee only so it was a good choice to play on my way up to Monterey for the weekend. My very first impression of the course was how friendly everyone is- the other players, the snack bar staff, the starter, pretty much everyone except the lady in the pro shop who was impatient and just not interested in answering my questions. One thing I thought was odd was when I asked to purchase a logo ball for my collection, she said they only sell sleeves of monogrammed balls. They don't sell singles. One to display, 2 to lose, I guess.

I was paired with 2 guys whose wives were along for the ride. They were a very fun group and we had an enjoyable time. It was pretty entertaining when I found that the guys could barely hit the ball. (and of course they were playing from the blue tees…)

The fairways were really nice- few thin spots, good cushion and a decent amount of roll out. There are only two or three bunkers on the course and no water. The tee boxes varied with some being level and some with the ball noticeably above or below my feet.
I had a tough time with the greens. They did not hold shots well and there were some unexpected and severe breaks causing what normally would have been a really good shot, to roll off the back of the green.

My playing partners only stayed for nine holes. I played the back by myself following a slow foursome. I didn't really mind as it gave me the chance to play a few extra balls here and there.

The course is fun and has some nice ocean views. I would like to play it again if I'm back in the area.

Played Morro bay yesterday on a cool but sunny Sunday morning. Played with an older couple and they were very ice to play with. The course was in very nice condition, tee boxes were mostly green and level and divots were filled in. The fairways I thought were excellent shape. The greens to me were the star of the show, they held every shot I had making a ball mark and the ball staying within a foot of the ball mark. I had a little trouble reading them and I thought I left at least 5 strokes out there to do not making those short birdie putts. I always have a great time playing here and I would like to play it more if I lived closer, but I will definitely return.....

Walked the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in 4H, 45M with Dale, Lonnie and Gary mid day for $32. Partly cloudy, breezy and around 70 made for nice golfing conditions. However, we played behind the 4some from hell. Sharing rental clubs, 2 looked like beginners and 2 looked like they had never played before. They were off to such a slow start that the Marshall told them to start playing best ball halfway up the first fairway. Their group had already hit roughly a dozen shots and were still barely 200 yards from the tee? 3+ consecutive whiffs were not uncommon. By the 5th tee group members were hitting extra tee shots after their first few attempts went less than 20 yards. Multiple players quit behind them after the first 6 holes took 2 hours. After two in our group left after 9, they finally waived us through on 14 fairway with holes 15-18 wide open. So they were at least 4 holes behind by that point, because a 4some teed off right in front of them. We had completed our round and were driving away when they were on 17 green? It seemed like a lot longer than a 4H, 45M round. Glad I was walking and pacing things at least somewhat. It would have been really irritating riding between shots and waiting even longer. The Marshall talked to them twice, without much improvement. Whatever happened to start on the driving range, then play par 3 courses, then move up to executive courses and only when you can at least hit the ball consistently, graduate to a regulation course? Collectively they had no business on a regulation golf course. The kikuyu tees were mostly lush, Good overall, but most of the par 3's were chewed up with divots. The kikuyu fairways were lush and maintained high, not much roll on these fairways. The mostly kikuyu rough was lush, not high but thick. It would quickly kill your shots, very little roll, one bounce and stop. There are only a few sand traps on the course. Was not in any, but they looked okay. The smallish poa annua greens putted medium speed and were smooth. Some of the softest greens I have putted on in awhile, actually backed up several irons on these greens. No GPS on the basic carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. Customer service was excellent, quick efficient check in, friendly starter who was later the Marshall. Usually no drink cart here. While there are some shorter holes to start, this is a deceptively long course because of the hills, usual 1-2 club ocean breeze and the kikuyu. Two par 3's from the Blacks that today were playing 238 and 243 to back pins. I frequently use almost every club in my bag on this course. Recommended.

Walked the Blues (6083/69.6/116) mid morning in 4H, 15M. Paired with my neighbor Dale, Ju Ju and Larry, very fun group to play with. Foggy and overcast conditions around 70. $45 to walk mid morning is steep IMO. Being at sea level coupled with the lack of roll from the kikuyu make this course play hundreds of yards longer than you would presume based on the scorecard yardages. Like the par 71 layout featuring three par 5's and four par 3's. The par 3's play downhill and the par 5's play uphill, so the scorecard yardages are deceptive. Tough walking course with all the hills. The Kikuyu tees were decent, mowed down and well maintained. The Kikuyu fairways were lush, mowed down low, nice to play from. The mostly Kikuyu rough was maintained low and has mostly good coverage. A few hard pan areas farther off the fairways. Only 3 sand traps on this layout. Looked decent walking by, few foot prints. The mostly smallish poa greens putted nice. Medium fast, relatively smooth and held approach shots well. No large tiers or mounds, but there are few straight putts and putts above the hole could be quick. There are many greens where you will have putts that break 2' to 4' if you are any distance from the hole, with the break predictably being toward the ocean. The area in front of greens is mowed down like a links course, so everything from a putter to a lob wedge may be a viable option from 15 yards off the green. Beside and behind the greens the rough is taller. Customer service was excellent, checked in and on the 1st tee shortly thereafter. This course would remind you much more of a mountain course than a beach course. You do not expect a hilly, tree lined course less than a mile from the ocean. The tree lined fairways are constantly up down hills, some severely up/down. Not a tight layout and it offers some tremendous views of Morro Bay and Morro Rock on a clear day. No drink cart today, Marshall out patrolling and friendly Starter. Probably because the low and high temps are fairly close all year, the playing conditions of this course do not vary much seasonally. Consistently good to excellent. Fun course, Recommended.

Walked the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in slightly less than 5H super twilight. Paired with 2 high schoolers and a super senior, we all walked and had a good time. Clear, breezy and around 70, we finished just before dark. The course was super busy with 4some after 4some the day after a holiday. Tees were the weakest part of the course, Just okay, decent coverage. Not much roll on these Kikuyu fairways. They had good coverage and were mostly lush. Very little roll in the kikuyu rough. Mostly lush, not high but very thick. There are only a few sand traps on this course. they looked to be well maintained. The smallish poa annua greens held shots well. They putted medium fast and were mostly smooth, the hi-lite of the course. The greens make this course. There is alot of break and downhill putts are often treacherous. Customer service was excellent @ check in, quick and efficient. Starter got me paired up, no drink cart today. Marshall was out patrolling. No GPS on the carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. Recommended.

Walked the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in around 3.5H super twilight. Overcast, breezy and around 65 in what ended up being a nice late afternoon round. Arrived around 3pm, super busy as there were about two dozen people waiting for the super twilight rate. A family of six on vacation had the first two super twilight tee times. Grandpa, grandma, dad, mom and two kids. Several looked and acted like they had never played on a regulation course before. The Marshall allowed them to combine their two 3somes into a 6some? One guy asked why the 6some, and I listened to the Marshall's explanation that he wanted them to have a good time on vacation? Nice thought, but I would presume the roughly 20 other people teeing off directly behind them were as unamused as I was? Did the Marshall really think anyone playing behind Ma and Pa Kettle and their clan were going to have a good time? After it took around 40 minutes to play the first 2 holes, I dropped out of my group and shifted over to the wide open back 9, then finished the front 9 later with no one around. So 40 minutes for 2 holes, then around 2H, 45M for the other 16 made for one of the longest sub 3.5H rounds I have ever played. The course? Good overall. Tees were mediocre. Decent coverage, but most of the par 3's were chewed up with divots. Kikuyu fairways had good coverage and were lush. Not much roll on these fairways. Rough was lush, not high but very thick. Very little roll in the kikuyu. There are only a few sand traps on this course. Was not in any, but they looked decent. The smallish poa annua greens putted medium fast. They held shots extremely well, balls would consistently back up on these greens. No GPS on the carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. Customer service was excellent @ check in, quick and efficient. Marshall was highly ??? No starter or drink cart today. Recommended.

Played Tuesday, June 18th at 8:00 am, then again June 19th at 3:00 pm. Same course, dramatically different conditions. Tuesday visibility was about 50 yards due to heavy fog. Wednesday it was clear and warm. The ball went farther Wednesday but the greens were slower than Tuesday. I don't think they had mowed them between the two rounds. I enjoyed both rounds.

The tees had good coverage, Okay overall, but most of the par 3's were chewed up with divots. The fairways had good coverage, pretty lush for kikuyu. Not much roll on these fairways. The rough was lush, not high but thick. It would quickly kill your shots. There are only a few sand traps on the course. Was not in any, but they looked okay. The smallish poa annua greens putted medium slow but were okay once you adjusted to the speed. Some of the softest greens I have putted on in awhile, actually backed up several mid irons on these greens. No GPS on the carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. Customer service was excellent, quick efficient check in. No drink cart today. Recommended.

Played yesterday. First off and done in 2.5 H (glad of that, it was packed when we finished) under cloudy skies (and no wind) which cleared up after 9, allowing one to see the beautiful Morro Bay views. This is a course I could play many times during the week, if I lived in the area. Truly a beautiful layout and superbly maintained. Tee boxes were spotless. Fairways were mowed, clean and provided great lies and roll, all round. Rough was not tall/penal and was playable. Greens were perfect and after reading the previous review and following the instructions, I had an enjoyable round of golf. It is like playing 2 different courses (IMO). The front 9 is above the clubhouse, with elevation changes and the back 9 is across the road and below the clubhouse and much flatter from tee to green. Customer service was excellent at all levels. They are even running a special every day (including weekends) for $13 after 3 PM. With the long days and no doubt sunny skies in the afternoon, this would be a great play. And don't be afraid of the huge wild turkeys (the ones with 2 legs LOL) that roam the property. And when I say huge, I mean huge. Highly recommended when in the area.
