Rode the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in around 2.5H first out playing on a B-Day special. Thanks Morro Bay! Partly cloudy, calm and around 60 made for a nice early morning round. Fun, old school layout. Some doglegs, a couple of blind tees shots over the crest of hills. The area around the greens is mowed down like a links course. All 18 holes a player can run the ball onto the green if need be. Few sand traps, not long by modern standards, the courses primary defense is the smaller sized, quick greens that have alot of break. The tree lined fairways are constantly up down hills, some severely up/down. Mostly kikuyu, so even though it is hilly, do not expect ball to roll hundreds of yards down the fairways. Expect lots of unlevel lies once you leave the tee. This layout would remind you much more of a mountain course than a beach course. Not tight overall, but there are numerous tight shots with OB closeby. No water on this course. The tees were well maintained. Mowed a little high for my taste but not many unfixed divots and mostly level. The fairways had good coverage, pretty lush for kikuyu. Not much roll on these fairways. The rough was more thin than lush overall, but played decently. There are only I think 2? sand traps on the course. Was not in any, but they looked decent walking by, few foot prints. The smallish poa annua greens were recently vericutt but still putted nice. Medium fast, smooth for poa. They held approach shots very well. No large tiers or mounds, these greens are mounded. Usually back to front, with putts breaking toward the sides and front. There are few straight putts and anything above the hole and you are in trouble on numerous greens. Be prepared to play some big swinging putts on these greens. Par 71 layout. Three par 5's, four par 3's. The last three par 3's are 232/192/239 from the tips, but play downhill, so they play shorter but are still a bear. The par 5's are 496/468/512 from the tips, but play much longer due to a combination of being uphill, the prevailing wind and/or the kikuyu. No GPS on the carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. Customer service was excellent, no drink cart today, but friendly staff out on the course and in the pro shop. Recommended.

Walked the Whites (5633/67.7/112) in a Charity Tournament last Saturday. Typical Saturday tournament POP, well over 4.5H. Clear and calm conditions around 65. Played with Mike, Doris and Jody, we had a good time. $54 to walk Saturday morning was sticker shock compared to what I have been paying in the desert! Really enjoy the par 71 layout featuring three par 5's and four par 3's. Some doglegs with a couple of blind tee shots. The area in front of greens is mowed down like a links course, so everything from a putter to a lob wedge may be a viable option from 15 yards off the green. Beside and behind the greens the Kikuyu rough is taller, thick and plain needs to be avoided. The Kikuyu tees were nice, mowed down and well maintained. The Kikuyu fairways had good coverage. Semi lush, mowed down low, they were nice to play from. The mostly Kikuyu rough was thick and difficult to hit from. Especially difficult to chip from. Mostly good coverage, a few hard pan areas farther off the fairways. At least a 1/2 club penalty for most golfers. #10 green side is the only sand trap on the course. Looked to be decently maintained. The mostly smallish greens putted nice. Medium fast, relatively smooth and held approach shots well. No large tiers or mounds, but there are few straight putts and putts above the hole are quick. The downhill holes do not play as short as you expect because of the lack of roll on the Kikuyu. The uphill holes play longer than you would expect for the same reason. So scorecard yardages are VERY deceptive. Morro Bay GC is an old school layout around 100 years old. Not a tight course and offers tremendous views of Morro Bay and Morro Rock. In spite of the ocean views, this course would remind you more of a mountain course than a beach course. You do not expect a VERY hilly course with tree lined fairways less than a mile from the ocean. The layout is constantly up down hills, some severely up/down. The customer service was excellent. Drink cart out making the rounds. Small warm-up range that is basically pitch shots only close to #1 tee. Fun course, Recommended.

Played 8/14 with a 7:15 tee time on a overcast cool day. We never saw the sun until the 14th hole and then it was still quite cool. I was paired with two local guys and a friend of theirs from out of town. Really fun threesome. We got out on time and breezed around in 4 hours flat. They were having the mens club championship later that morning so the course was in top shape with some very tough pins.The greens here are relatively small without any big undulations but there are some slopes to deal with and they can be very deceptive.
Tee boxes where level and without too many divots.
The kikuya fairways were cut short and good to hit from. The rough made you work and could grab your club.
There are only two bunkers on the course and of course i found one! The sand was a little heavy and damp but very playable.
The greens were in very good shape with hardly a ball mark to be seen. They rolled medium fast and very smooth. I was told everything breaks towards the bay and yes it does. Some putts that looked like they had to turn ended up straight due to the pull from the bay.
This course is built on the side of the hills which makes for some sidehill lies in the fairways with most holes running either up or down hill. A couple of the par threes are just over 200 yards and when you add it being sea level and damp made for tough shots. Lots of trees along the edges to make you pay for a wayward shot.
The staff at checkin was great. No cart this day. Not sure if this is normal but you came back to the proshop at the turn so you can get anything you need then.
Overall a very enjoyable round and money well spent.

Clear and breezy conditions around 65. $15 to walk super twilight, tough walking course with all the hills. This course would remind you much more of a mountain course than a beach course. You do not expect a VERY hilly course less than a mile from the ocean. The tree lined fairways are constantly up down hills, some severely up/down. Not a tight layout and it offers some tremendous views of Morro Bay and Morro Rock. The Kikuyu tees were decent, mowed down and well maintained. The Kikuyu fairways had good coverage. We occasionally waited on the walking 2some in front of us but things moved well overall. You do not expect a hilly course less than a mile from the beach. This layout would remind you much more of a mountain course than a beach course. Not tight, the tree lined fairways are constantly up down hills, some severely up/down. The tees were mostly decent, mowed down and well maintained. Both the fairways and rough had good coverage. More winter thin than lush, but they both played decently. There are only a few sand traps on the course. Was not in any, but they looked decent walking by, few foot prints. The smallish greens putted nice. Medium fast, smooth and held approach shots well. No large tiers or mounds, these greens are old school... but there are few straight putts and anything above the hole and you are in trouble on numerous greens. Played on Veteran's Day as a foursome. Our tee time was at 11:37 but when we got to the course we were informed they were running 30 minutes behind. On top of that, they were charging an 18 dollar "service fee" that I've never heard of. Our round cost us 72 bucks and I'm guessing it's because of the holiday weekend.

POP was abysmal. We waited on every shot, as the group in front of us thought they were on tour. By the time we made the turn they were a whole hole behind the group in front of them. We saw the marshall plenty but he never said anything to the group in front of us. We teed off at 12:15 and we played speed golf on 18 to finish at 5:30.

Regardless, the round was fun. Morro Bay's greens are always tricky, and the fairways provided great lies throughout the day. Some of the rough was thick in places and others it was patchy.

Tee boxes had good coverage, but some could use some leveling. The few bunkers on the course had great sand in them.

As always, the views were spectacular of the bay, and this course is always one I'll come back to, just maybe not on a holiday weekend.

It was at least a 2 club difference and it always seemed like I was hitting into wind. The surroundings and the greens are the best part of this course. Tucked into a state park with diabolical greens make this a fun track.

What a treat. I had no idea this course offered such spectacular views. The front 9 alone is worth the green fees, and truthfully, at $15 walking after 3pm. That's an insanely good deal. I read this is one of the busiest courses in the state and I get it. I feel very fortunate that it was wide open, due to Easter weekend I expect. Some reviews call it a poor man's pebble beach and I get that too. The approach shot on 9 is just surreal. 270 degree ocean views. Wow. Who knew? I didn't, but do now and will be back. Still stunned....$15.

Played 8-26 with a foursome. Got into town around 1 and teed off at 2:30pm. Course was midly populated, but we never had to wait long for a shot. Front desk was very helpful with tips on how to play the greens, which was much appreciated. As for the greens, they are absolutely diabolical. It's unreal how much the ocean plays effect on your putts. If you're putt is uphill but facing the ocean, it'll be the fastest putt you'll have all day, unless you're the poor soul like myself who is stuck with a downhill putt facing the ocean. Putts that look like they'll break left won't and will pull to the ocean. A 2 putt from 15 feet is a great feat on this course. Fairways and tee boxes were in great shape. Hard from the afternoon sun and wind. Rough is very thin but thick the greens.
