Played Canyon Crest Country Club on August 1, 2015, courtesy of my buddy Danny getting an invite from the General Manager. Was exceedingly kind of James, the GM, to invite us out to play. In any case, on to the review:

Staff - First rate all the way. Guys working bag drop, pro shop counter, cart girl, restaurant staff, etc. Everyone was genuinely kind and hard working. Cannot say enough good things about the staff.

Practice Facilities - Great putting green and great driving range. Used both quite extensively prior to my round.

Tee boxes - Pretty even, and lush. Never had a problem finding a good area to tee off from.

Fairways - Looked pretty good considering the water restrictions that are in place. A few dry areas, but not nearly as bad as they could be. Indeed, in many areas, the grass was deep enough that I wound up hitting shots fat.

Sand - The only area that I can say was not exceptional. Most were pretty hard packed without much sand to hit from. This is true for fairway bunkers and greenside bunkers. Not the worst I have ever played, but could use some more sand.

Greens - When I first approached the green, there seemed to be some discoloration to the grass. I am not sure if this is a watering issue or some sort of malady. In any case, the discoloration made no difference for purposes of putting. I never encountered a put that would hop or go offline. Each of the greens was playing exceptionally well (even if I was not putting exceptionally well that day).

All in all, this was a wonderful experience, and I truly appreciate the staff making us feel right at home. If this course were closer to home, I would certainly consider a membership.

Finally, one final thank you to James, the GM, for inviting Danny and allowing me to tag along with him.

Played on july 4. Great for a quick round out. 2 hours total. Greens were slow to start, but got faster as time went on. Pro shop staff was great, as always. Cannot speak for sqnd traps as I did not hit any that day. Tee boxes were not perfect, but in good condition.

All in all, definitely would play again for a quick round.

Good: Staff is always wonderful. Place is never overbooked. The setting is quite relaxing with Deer all over everywhere.

Bad: Tee boxes are not level. Fairways are all at an angle. Drainage ditches run through the fairways. The fairways are very thin in many places. The greens are impossible to read. Sand is thin in some bunkers (though they have recently added sand to some of the bunkers). No beverage cart in the afternoons.

All in all, this is my "home course", so I will certainly play again. Cannot say it is the best course in the world, but it is certainly decent enough for a casual afternoon round.

Went to big island on vacation and was able to play one round. Was going to play mauna kea, but decided that may be a bit much for me, so i started looking for an alternate course. Decided on mauna lani and could not be happier.

Played on january 22, 2015. Just went into pro shop on the 20th and the lady there got me a great rate (130.00 vs. the normal 200.00).

Showed up early to get some practice in with rental clubs (all taylormade sldr). Pro shop staff and everyone else were just wonderful people. Only thing negative was i asked for stiff shaft, but got regular shaft. In the end, clubs were nice, so was not a huge deal. Also, this was the only thing negative i encountered at mauna lani.

In any case, got to hit some balls, got to putt the massive practice green, then was told i was up by the starter. Starter actually came ans found me on practice green, instead of just announcing that i was up, which was a nice personal touch.

Was by myself, so i got set up with a twosome that were very nice. We teed off exactly on time, and were able to play the entire course (including stopping for pictures) in 3.5 hours.

Course itself was absolutely phenomenal. Tee boxes were perfect, fairways were perfect, greens were fast and perfect, etc. Sand was fluffier than the sand on the beach. Many holes on the water, with number 15 being the nicest hole i have ever seen. I actually had a shot get screwed up by me getting hit by ocean spray. Just absolutely phenomenal.

After round i stopped at the bar for a beer, and even the bar was wonderful. Great view, great ambiance, and great beer selection.

In sum, Mauna Lani south is, hands down, the best course i have ever played. Nearly everything about mauna lani was just perfect. Could not have asked for a better round of golf. Next time i am on the big island, i hope to be able to play the north course. If you are on the big island and can get a round in, definitely play mauna lani south.

Played this course on January 2, 2014. Late morning tee time. My buddy and I were paired up with two other players.

When I arrived, I went and checked in at the pro shop. Staff was quite friendly. Pro shop was busy. My buddy and I were directed out to the starter, who paired us with another twosome. Starter was very pleasant (in the past, I have had grumpy starters at Tahquitz).

Course itself was nice and lush, with everything green. Fairways, teeboxes and rough were all very good.

Greens were slightly patchy and were bumpy in some areas.

Sand was generally good, though there were some small rocks in some of the sandtraps.

Staff was very pleasant (marshal, pro-shop, starter, and drink cart person).

All in all, it was worth the $59.00 golfnow rate that I got (considering that all other PS courses were $100.00 + for the holiday weekend). With that said, I cannot justify spending much more than the $59.00 rate, when there are many other great courses in PS and the Coachella Valley as a whole.

Went out November 30, 2014 at 11:45 a.m. They were running a bit behind, so we did not tee off until about Noon. No big deal, as it gave us time to hit a small bucket of balls.

Greens were great. Fast and in very good condition. Fairways had some dry spots, but were generally good. Same goes for the rough. Sand was good enough. Not fluffy, but not hard pan either.

Staff was always incredibly friendly and helpful.

All in all, the $46.00 rate that we paid was well worth it.

Played Marshall canyon on Sunday, august 21, 2011. Paid $44.00.

Condition of course was mediocre at best. Pace of play wa bad. No cart girl at all. Tee boxes were all uneven to the point that it got annoying. Fairways were half dead and half lush. Rough was decent enough. Greens had lots of ball marks.

All that said, this is my home course for my Pomona house (not mountain meadows due to pace of play issues there). As my home course I will play here again, but cannot recommend anyone going out of their way to play Marshall.

Played classic club this morning for the 49.00 aeration special.

There is something very special about this course. Staff was great. Condition of course was great. Very lush.
Sand was fluffy and, for the most part, rather deep. Obviously, greens were in rough shape with above referenced aeration. That said, they were still in better shape than quite a few other courses I have played.

Only negatives were july heat and a crazy humming bird that attacked me on tee box for hole 4.

I will definately play this course again. I want to give it a go when it is not so hot and when the greens are healed.

Played Glen Ivy on July 3, 2011. Paid $49.00 golf now rate for a Noon tee time.

Pace of play was great. Tee boxes were great, as were the greens. The fairways were a brown in some areas and were quite hard. Sand Traps were very good, except for one that had standing water (rest actually had sand in them, unlike some other courses I have played recently).

Clubhouse staff, as always, was great. They let us tee off a bit late, as one of my foursome was running late. Staff had no problem accommodating our group, though. Once on the course, we were never backed up and, despite a rather full parking lot, did not see many others out playing (could have something to do with the fact that it was 98 degrees out).

Only real downsides to day was that they turned the sprinklers on while we were on hole 9 green and again on tee box for hole 11. Got whole group drenched, but given the heat, was somewhat refreshing. Also, Course could stand a few more water stations placed on the Course, especially on hot and muggy days.

All in all, I really do enjoy Glen Ivy. Their staff is always great and the layout is great (especially holes 14-18). I will definitely return, likely sooner rather than later.

Played Sierra Lakes on Saturday, June 25, 2011. Payed $49.00 golf now rate.

Staff was excellent. Golf Now rate did not include range balls, but we were given a range ball code none the less. Just mentioned we wanted to warm up and would like to purchase range bucket, but staff just gave it to us. Also, staff let us out about 20 minutes earlier than our tee time (could have gone out even earlier, but wanted to hit the aforementioned bucket of balls first). Cart girl came around frequently (at least four times), which was good because it was rather hot out.

Conditions of course were very good. Grass was green and lush in fairways, rough, greens, and tee boxes. Greens were quick and rather hard. Even though most greens looked like they would break toward the valley floor, putts would not break.

Sand traps had actual sand in them (seems to be a rarity these days), though there were some small pebbles mixed in with sand. Traps were still very nice, though.

Only real negative is that there were some people out that did not understand pace of play, and who became confrontational when my group would tee off while those people were still playing a hole (long par 5, and people were well over 400 yards out). Cannot knock the course for this, as it is just luck of the draw as to who was out playing that day.

All in all, a very nice course and well worth the green fee. I will definately be back when I can get another deal on greens fees.

Played on April 2, 2011. VERY windy (i.e. driver off the tee on par 3s into wind would not reach green). Due to wind, no one in our foursome broke 100, and each lost no less than 6 balls.

Course condition was excellent, though bunkers were somewhat hard packed. Tee boxes were great, fairway very good, rough was very good. Greens were pretty slow, however.

Customer service was excellent. I screwed up and booked online tee time for April 1, 2011 (instead of April 2), but staff had no problem getting us out and honored the April 1 rate without question ($44.00 per person). This course has some of the best staff of any golf course in Southern California. Staff genuinely seems to enjoy helping people, which is an oddity these days.

All in all, check the weather for wind prior to going out. Without wind, this course is great. With wind, it can be punishing. As always, I would recommend this course, and will definately be back to play again.

Played on Saturday February 6, 2010. Wanted a quick round and it fit the bill at 2.5 hours +/-. Staff was very helpful at clubhouse. Course was in good condition. Flash flood from rain nearly swept away our golf cart, and washed out a good deal of the dirt cart paths. Only cost $29.00 to play, which is cheap this time of year. Would come back, but would play long course next time out.
