The whole experience was perfect, the course is in pristine condition, flat tee boxes, manicured sand traps, firm smooth greens. the greens are all that greens are supposed to be, they are quick and sometimes fast, even very fast, but true, the ball will roll where you hit it. This is a great place to play.

There was a time when this course was moving backwards and beginning to deteriorate. However, they definitely caught the negative trend and have made efforts to reverse it. I love this place but stayed away for a bit because of what I saw was happening and the rate is not cheap. The management has done much to make the conditions of the course match the difficulty and the price. The course is playing really well again. I had no complaints. Fairways are much better than they used to be. Greens are a real test on your putting skills. The tee boxes are great. The sand is the way it should be. I will definitely be back and you should definitely play it.

Played this course again on Friday April 6th. The course has "greened" up considerably over the past month. Still an incredibly challenging layout.

The tee boxes were in excellent shape, nearly perfect teeing grounds. Very few divots on the par 3's, and the rest of the boxes were nearly flawless.

The fairways continue to be very thin, and bare in several spots. It was very noticeable on several holes, especially on the approaches to several greens. A couple were completely bare with no grass, I am glad I did not have to take any shots from these approaches. The rough has grown in a little better than my last visit, but continues to be very thin. A couple holes had some lushness on one side of the fairway, but overall the rough is generally non-existent.

The greens continue to be in excellent shape, and running extremely fast. This was once again probably the best part of the course conditions wise. The bunkers were sort of hit or miss, I found several throughout the day, and some were fluffy and soft, others a little more hard packed.

Hopefully with some more rain this course will continue to bloom and the rough will be able to grow into a proper length. If playing here for the first time, bring lots of old golf balls, you will lose several.

Played this course for the first time on Friday March 2nd. I have been here several times to use the grass driving range and excellent practice putting greens. Both of these features are excellent and worth the trip.

Knowing this was a Nicklaus course, I was expecting difficult, and the course did not let down. Very challenging design, with many "natural habitat" waste areas that you are not supposed to enter, and honestly you don't want to enter.

The tee boxes on the course were in excellent condition in my opinion, the markers were well spaced out, and there were few divots or uneven areas. I thought they were one of the better parts of the course.

The fairways and rough were another story though. The grass seems to be completely dormant still, and the rough as noted in the prior review is completely non-existent. You can barely tell where the fairway ends and the rough begins. The fairways were extremely thin, with lots of bare patches. They also were nearly as hard as concrete, we found that our ball would just roll and roll, into hazards that were not really in play. The lack of rough compounded this problem.

The absolute best aspect of the course were the green complexes. The bunkers and actual greens were in magnificent condition. The greens ran really quick, had almost no marks, and rolled very smooth. I found myself in several bunkers, and the sand was in top notch condition and they were all well raked.

In conclusion the super thin fairways and lack of decent rough made this a tough outing. I would like to see the course in late April, maybe after the rough has grown in and the fairways have gotten to their full potential. A return trip will be in order, as I did enjoy the routing and style of the course. The layout is very challenging.

The greenside bunkers are also in excellent condition. However, the fairways are extremely thin and brown. There are quite a few areas with hard pan. There is no rough at all. Although the course is playable, it's not worth anything near the rack rate. Hopefully, springtime will see this course's condition improve.

It seems they are spray painting the fairways green, which leaves an odd fluorescent green... doesn't seem to affect playability. Fairways are fine, just winter brown/fluorescent green. The last time I played here was when they had no clubhouse (which is really nice btw), and it seems they made the course a bit more playable by removing some of the ESA, converting it to rough. It would be nice if people took care of the course, though. rake a bunker... fill a divot... Not horrible, but it would be annoying if your ball landed in a monster bunker footprint/hole.

The tee boxes are fine as well. However, the fairways are very dried out. There are thin lies everyone and quite a bit of hardpan. This is a challenging, and interesting course to play. However, for the high green fees, I will wait until the fairways get a little more grass. I was told by one of the guys in the pro shop that they were going to overseed, but I'm not sure he is correct.

The golf now discount rates in the low 60's seem about right for conditions here - unfortunately, lots of punters now on the course as a result so pace is a little slower but still not too bad.

Tees are being re- seeded so the rating for them is poor but they are very marshy and thin at the moment. Fairways are thin and dry/mostly dormant and hard-pan in areas. Rough is thin too and patchy with different growths here and there. Sand is good - greens are the best part as they are quite fast, smooth and rolling well.

I played here yesterday 11/5. It was my first time playing this course, but it's one I've wanted to play for years. I stumbled upon an 11:50 tee time yesterday morning on GolfNow at a reasonable rate (for this course anyway) of $79. Everyone else checking in at the same time was paying over $100, so I guess I got a good deal.

I've had mixed reactions in general to Nicklaus courses and my reaction to Angeles National is just as mixed.

The conditions were not great, so that didn't help. The tee boxes were awful, mainly due to the overseeding they were doing on all of them. They had the black, blue and white tees all grouped together at the blue distances. Luckily I usually play blue anyway, but other people wouldn't have a choice. Not sure how long it will be set up that way. Several of the tee boxes were muddy and puddled up with water. Let's just say it is very odd teeing off in standing water conditions.

The fairways were OK. Pretty patchy with brown spots. Fairways were very firm and fast, so if you play right now expect A LOT of extra roll on your drives. With ample trouble you can get into (well placed bunkers and lots of environmental hazard areas), you have to be careful off the tee to not run through and into a bad spot. The rough was in pretty good shape and easy to play from. Personally, I preferred hitting my iron shots out of the nice rough as opposed to the firm, tight-lie fairways.

The greens and bunkers were in great shape (except for the inconsiderate people who don't repair their ball marks or rake the sand). Greens were also firm and FAST. I've heard the greens here were tough and that is certainly true. Hard to read, hard to hold. Very large greens with tough pin placements makes it hard to get close with an approach. If you have any birdie putts within 15-20 feet, you are doing very well.

The staff was friendly, on time and organized. There were a number of big groups going out this day (a tournament and a bachelor party), but we teed off on time and the pace was decent for a weekend on a full course. A little under 5 hours for the round.

Overall, Angeles National is a challenging track with great scenery all around. Like any Nicklaus course, it has its quirks and can be evil at times (especially on/around the greens), but a good test for golfers of all levels. Would love to play it someday when it was in better shape, though, and that might improve my opinion. Not sure I would ever pay the full rack rate here, but it's decent if you can get a deal.

The only other thing I wanted to comment on is there's a huge difference between the men's and women's tee boxes. We had a woman in our group who was a really good driver of the ball (200+ off the tee) and it probably played too short for someone of her skill level. A few of the par 3's had the women teeing off within 50-60 yards of the hole (when the men are at 175+), which seemed a bit silly. So if you are a longer-hitting woman and want a tougher test on this course, you may consider playing whites instead of the reds.
