I saw the warning of maintenance but booked it anyway due to the difficulty of getting a decent tee time. That said, I can't remember seeing as much sand as I did on #6. I may as well have been in Dubai. Overall Rancho will always be a class of the field type muni but this place needs to heal for about 2-3 weeks before I'd consider playing it again. Pace of play was good at 4:15 with an 8:00 tee time. Maybe it was guys like us just taking auto 2 putts due to the conditions.

Played today, April 6, with a 6:50 tee time. I think we were the third group out. The first group was very slow, ended up being a 4:20 POP, which is way too slow for that early. We waited on most shots. Otherwise nice day out there. Pleased to see the snack shack open at the 12th tee. The food truck at the clubhouse was not open when we walked by at 11:10.

Probably a good thing they are aerating this week. The greens were putting as good as I have seen them, rolling true and fast, but they were quite firm. We had trouble finding divots from the balls on some of the greens we hit. Anything more than a wedge was going to bounce out. Very little check on chips around the green. The rest of the course was good. Decent coverage in the fairways and the rough was inconsistent but fairly thick in places. I was in three green side bunkers. Good sand at # 4 and ittle or no sand in the ones at # 12 and #16.

Always a pleasure getting out here, today included. Recommended.

Played this past week at Rancho Park again in a men's club event. Not sure why I was put on the blue tees as my game has been pretty poor of late and it's showing in my handicap, but I don't make the rules. The show must go on.

Had a 12:10pm tee time on what turned out to be one gorgeous afternoon ... spring felt sprung. POP first and foremost was quite good for RP as we finished both nines in around 4:15 - can't get much better than that at this place.

Conditions very solid at the moment ... really good greens right now running very fast, very true and very tricky. Fairways are mostly good but there were some remnants of GUR from the recent rains. Rough was fun, tee boxes were decent and the bunkers appeared to be in serviceable to good shape.

Also using just about every club in your bag here so it's a great test and nice conditions most certainly enhance the experience. I would give it a peppy thumbs-up right now at Rancho.

The greens were great. A few bumps but running at a nice fast pace. The course was not as lush as last time I played it but still in good condition tee to green. Well worth the cost. Can't wait to get out there again.

Three of us played from the blue tees. They had the blue tee area roped off on the two par 3s on the front so they were playing shorter than usual. The course is is decent winter shape. They were putting quite a bit of water on it and it is greener than other courses I have played lately. The greens are nice right now and pretty quick. The two bunkers I was in had good sand. The tee boxes were spotty.

Overall, the course is in good shape and I hope to get back there soon.

Spent this past Sunday afternoon playing in a Rancho Park men's club tournament on a very hot day enjoying one of SoCal's best public courses. My group played from the white tees and had an 11:40am tee time, so we were right in the thick of the heat, but the course has held up well.

Fairways are in good shape with the occasional thin spots around the greens and many remnants of old GUR areas that are apparently back in good graces - but the faint outlines are there to see! Rough was thick in areas but thin in others, while the bunkers in good shape from what I saw. The worst part of the course were some of the uneven tee boxes and one that had barely any grass at all (I'm looking at you #10) - definitely improvement needed there.

Greens were in good shape - consistent speeds, holding shots well and lines being true to the putts taken. No complaints on the greens at all. I was very appreciative of those greens as I had a career afternoon which I'll write about in the 'What'd you shoot - September' section!

POP was not great at the start but really picked up after the 4th hole and we pretty much kept moving nicely for the rest of the afternoon. The old rumors of Rancho Park's six-hour rounds are nothing more than nostalgia now and that's a great thing.

If you can get a time there, I would recommend it right now.

I generally do not play golf in the afternoon but agreed to meet some friends to play Rancho Park. I expected the round to be brutally slow, but it was not all that bad, maybe because I enjoyed the company. Under five hours, so tolerable. Round conditions were decent, greens being the best part. Fairways for the most part had good coverage. Only found one bunker, and it had sand and was maintained. Overall, no real complaints.

Hard not to enjoy such a fine old traditional course like Rancho Park. It provides adequate challenge, with being penal or overwhelming. Golf like I grew up playing.

Rounded out the busy golf week with an RPGC tournament round at the home course on Sunday. My flight put me in the white tee box and we had a 12:30pm tee time on a very hot but gorgeous summer day in the Cheviot Hills.

First and foremost, the greens right now are running great at RP. They roll true, they're much faster than they look and are holding good shots well. Absolutely getting it right currently when it comes to the flat stick surface. And to be fair, the rest of the course is pretty darn good right now as well.

Fairways have plenty of green and lush areas but you'll also get some thin especially up around the greens and in some runoff areas. Rough is generally mixed but nothing too crazy that I found. Bunkers were in good shape with ample sand but you're not mistaking it for Augusta. Tee boxes were good - flat and level. Everything is working properly at Rancho right now.

No cart service but that's standard at Rancho Park, but the snack shop on 12 remains one of the best in the business. The driving range is really interesting because it's absolutely packed with all walks of life - range rats, Instagram influencers, coaches, college kids and everything in-between. The people watching at the range is LA pure.

So yes, overall, good value for your money right now at Rancho Park and definitely a very good challenge for your game at all times.

Played a recent RPGC event on the home course and can't say that I was thrilled with the current course conditions. Unfortunately there are a lot of aspects of Rancho Park right now that have dropped off significantly since prior visits.

Played from the blue tees and walked and already saw a lot of trouble on the first green. Quite simply, the greens right now are in pretty bad shape. They're bumpy. Picking your line is a guessing game with all of the ruts and damage. There's no consistency of speed. It's a real mess right now on the greens and I don't how it happened so quickly.

Fairways are okay in most high-traffic areas but there sure are a lot of new areas that could use some GUR flagging. A lot of thin and dirt areas just off the fairways on a lot of holes, plus a lot of mowed shavings everywhere to easily lose your ball. The bunkers were in good shape which was surprising, and the tee boxes were mostly okay being both level and decently covered with grass, but not surprisingly a few of them are quite beat up.

Playing in a tournament, the POP was actually moving pretty nicely throughout the round so that's about the best I can say. Unfortunately, not only was the snack shop at the 12th hole green closed on a busy day, but the vending machine next to it was completely empty. That's just lousy customer service when a lot of golfers know the layout and look forward to that nice refueling station before tackling the last half-dozen or so holes. Disappointing.

I'm more than certain that Rancho Park will get its act together again soon, especially when it comes to the greens, but I would certainly not recommend it right at this moment. There are just too many factors that are not up to their usual standards at this moment.
