Went out for dawn patrol this morning, 5/21 and was absolutely delighted to see the course in truly great shape. It's a major turnaround from March -- they got it in great shape for the Police/Celebrity Tournament last Saturday, and I sure hope they keep it that way. The greens are as good as I've seen them since they were all replaced. There were still five or six ball marks to fix on just about every green, but they've healed beautifully from the aeration and they're rolling pretty smooth indeed. Fairways are as good as I've ever seen them, and some tee boxes would be acceptable at a private course. Now is absolutely the time to play Rancho... let's hope they can keep it looking and playing this nice!

I played Rancho for the first time in my life today 5/16/03. I really enjoyed the Course. The first hole was a Temporary Par 3 due to a Tournament being played this weekend. The course is in great shape for a public course. I was told that I wouldn't finish with a 1:30 pm time, but finished with daylight to spare. I guess I got lucky. I'm proud to say I shot 84. I'm currently a 16 handicap. The historic 18th was fun dodging balls from the Driving Range, but managed a par knowing Arnold Palmer took a 12. Rancho is everything people talk about and more. I would love to play there again.

Greens still have a little way to go to grow but otherwise, course in terrific shape, considering the amount of play it gets and abuse by 'public' course players who don't take care of courses.

All 18 greens punched within the past week. Played yesterday and the course was using 18 Alternate Greens (16 & 17 have two greens each so these play on "regular" surfaces). Some of these alternate greens are better than others. With a little luck the regular greens will come along well as they heal up. When Rancho replaced all the greens three years ago, the plan apparently was to "rest" three each day & play to alternate greens, but that actually didn't happen, and in the past two years I've rarely seen any alternates in play until yesterday -- quite a different experience from "tigerwoods," but then again, it's 18 alternates now and probably will be for at least a few more days.

Rancho Park needs a new course manager and greenskeeping staff. It really could be a great course, even though the six-hour round is typical for a weekend.

Rancho would be a great course were it not for the excrutiatingly slow pace of play and the fact that in over 10 rounds that I have played there I have never played 18 regular greens. Every time that I go there seem to be a couple of greens that are closed with an "alternate" green consisting of mowed fairway 40 yards in front of the green with a double-sized cup punched in the center. Pack a lunch, leave a six hour window in your day and make sure to read the monument on 18 by the brick bench for a decent laugh...you'll have plenty of time to sit there and stare at it.

Played here again on Saturday, 3/30. Greens slightly better, though still very bumpy, beaten, and inconsistent in terms of speed. 17 green much faster than all others, at least on Saturday. Aeration actually begins the second week in April according to the calendar at the course. The greens will surely benefit, but check back with the course if you're playing in mid-April.

Potential gem of a muni, but the greens have been devastated by rude players who just never fix ball marks. Slow play is absolutely the norm; count on six hours on the weekends. It's just a shame that this once-beautiful facility has been so devastated by plain rudeness. Please, folks, repair ball marks on greens!
