Got in a round at Rio Hondo with a buddy of mine playing with a 12:44 tee time and riding, playing from the blue tees. We were paired ironically with the new head greenskeeper Tom - great dude! - who let us know that they will be aerating the Rio Hondo greens this Sunday 10/20. Something to keep in mind.

Right now Rio Hondo is slightly off from its best, which is usually quite good as it's one of the best municipal courses in LA county, and not just for the value, but its conditions as well. But right now the greens are not in optimum shape as they're rather bumpy and showing some wear and tear - that should be better after the upcoming punch. They still held shots well but just weren't near their very best.

Same applies to the fairways which were adequate but definitely a lot of thin areas and a few too many 'divots' or dry dirt patches where I would find decently placed shots. The rough was nice though and very playable but ample. The bunkers were also in pretty good shape all things considered - no complaints there. Tee boxes? Decent for sure, and mostly good, but a few were a little rough around the edges and there were a few holes with some makeshift tee areas as they're doing some work on the tee boxes so they got creative with the markers.

Carts are simple but work well and don't have any GPS. We did not have any cart service all afternoon which would have been very nice on a hot day, but like Mick Jagger says - you can't always get what you want. POP was pretty good on the front nine but definitely slowed down a lot around the 13th hole and was a slog the rest of the way which was unfortunate.

All in all it was still a fun afternoon at a solid course but just keep in mind the upcoming punch and hopefully with some rain and TLC from the new greenskeeper, Rio Hondo will be back to its very best quite soon.

Not a great deal of change from when I played here last month, except the greens are a lot slower and softer now. Otherwise, conditions are very playable. Some of the tee boxes need a "haircut" but always able to find a spot to put the peg in the ground. Enjoy the layout. Interesting, a challenge, but not so penal as to stress you out. Staff is always accommodating, and the charges are still reasonable. Recommend this course

Walked the whites Sunday 8/4 at 11:40. Hot day but the golf was pretty good. Hadn't been here since spring and was glad to see the course still in good shape. Tee boxes were a little overgrown in spots, but overall mostly level. Fairways here can be on the narrow side, especially on the front, and were somewhat on the thin side, but overall in good shape. Was in a few bunkers and a few had really nice sand and others were a little thin, so inconsistent for sure. Greens were in good shape, very soft, and people need to fix their pitch marks, but they rolled good if a little slow.

Overall a fun course that challenges you with some length and accuracy. POP was actually not awful at 5 hours; i usually budget 5.5+ here on weekends. Would recommend

Took advantage of an invite from a friend for an early round, which from prior experience is the only good time to play Rio Hondo (Or anywhere for that matter) Robert's recent review was spot on, although I thought the greens were a bit quicker than I expected. Certainly not fast, but decent pace. Good coverage in the fairways. The two bunkers I found had well maintained sand. Rough was a bit inconsistent, but never severe.

Always enjoy playing this course. Enough of a challenge without being too penal. A few of the four pars are becoming a bit too long for me, but that too is becoming the norm everywhere I play now. Fun interesting layout at a decent price, and the staff is always good to deal with.

Busy past week of golf started out at Rio Hondo midweek just before the 4th of July and the course is in really good shape right now from tee to green. It's all good ... nothing super spectacular, but also no glaring faults that come to mind.

Driving range is not bad at all, and it's two-tiered if you're into that kind of thing. We played from the blue tees and this course will throw all its toughest angles at you on the front nine. The back nine is kind of a picnic in comparison, but there are always a few holes here that can get you.

Greens were in very nice shape but not rolling ridiculously fast or anything. They did hold their lines well and were very consistent. Same with the fairways - lots of really good areas with the occasional thin ones, but very playable indeed. The rough has a few thick areas but for the most part not very penal and easy to play from. Bunkers were good, not great - again - playable. And the tee boxes were flat, level and decently maintained enough to not cause any issues.

There was no cart service throughout the hot day which is always a bummer, but also understandable midweek. I walked so I can't speak for the current conditions or accessories with the carts. But yeah, all in all a good showing from Rio Hondo and not a bad choice right now.

A little late on the review. Able to get out early, which is a key to playing here (Actually anywhere now) to avoid the 5+ hour round. Larry's recent review is spot on. Greens rolled nicely, good coverage in the fairways. Bunkers/tee boxes in good shape. Nice that they keep this course in such nice condition, without having increased the green fees like. so many other courses Recommend this course both because of condition and value for your $$

Greens very nice and releasing shots and putting with good speed. Good customer service all levels. Other than POP nice round of golf. Play very early would be my best advice. Sr rate with cart $48. $30 to walk.

Out today, 3/19, as a threesome teeing off round 1:40 and playing the whites. Course was in all around good shape. Teeing grounds had no issues, the fairways are tight but fine for play unless you are a heavy divot striker. With very tight chipping from the fairway, I opted for putter as often as possible. Rollout is commensurate with the fairway firmness. By contrast the rough is grown in to a good, playable length — occasionally a bit deeper and thicker. It's not one of those paces with minimal difference between fairway and rough. I missed the bunkers but they seemed clean and my partners had mixed results. The greens were clean, a nice quick pace, and the surrounding areas a good length for short game. Nice day on the warmish side, the pace was slow and we got around in just about five hours even. That was probably the only conspicuous negative and otherwise we all enjoyed the course and the round. No cart service but good options at the turn and a nicer than usual clubhouse bar. Recommended.

Out at 11:08 Sunday 2/25 as a single walking joined by a couple riding and another walker. As is usual here, the pace is very very slow. On a mid-day weekend you just have to mentally prepare for a 5.5 hour round. Teed off about 10 minutes past and for the most part had a wait into every hole. The worst bottleneck has to be on hole 3 which is a very tight par 5 tee shot. Someone in our group called the pro shop and someone from the shop did go out to try and find out what the hold up was. Didn't help much. Front 9 POP about 3 hours, though things tend to open up on the back. POP aside, the course is in decent shape at the moment. Fairways besides being narrow generally have tight lies, some bare spots, but overall didn't have issues. Rough could be very juicy and penal, seems like they're letting it grow out so it's lush and a ball could find itself buried easily. Greens and sand were highlights. Found a number of bunkers and they all had good sand to splash from. Greens were in good shape, rolling at a medium pace, very pure with minimal ball mark damage. Tee boxes were okay, fairly worn with divots, some muddy, but mostly level. Overall a challenging track that I personally find enjoyable. A good variety of holes with long par 3s, shortish par 5s and par 4s that make you strategize on tee shots. It is hard to stay in rhythm when the POP is slow but other than that would recommend.
