Golfed with fellow GKers and Meetup.com LA Golf group members Diane, George, Tony, and Todd. Went out as a fivesome (ugh), and managed to finish in around five hours. It started raining by the ninth, off and on light to medium showers. The only negative I can say about the course is the tee boxes need some time to recover. I don't know if it is from the recent cold and rainy weather, but the blue tees were really thin and beat down. Other than that, the course is in great condition. Lush fairways and rough. The sand was in great condition, light and fluffy despite the constant rain. Greens were smooth, free of ball marks, and rolling nice for a muni: I heard it was around an 8 on the stimp. Not lightning fast by any means, but decent roll without any bumpiness. My first time playing here, and I would not mind coming back. After the round, Diane turned us on to a nearby diner for some great burgers at a decent price.

Looked like they were changing the type of grass on the tees as all were thin and looked like they had recently been dug up. The fairways were the best I have ever seen at a course around this area. They were bright green and very lush. The greens were very bumpy and slow due to the recent aeration. Very good deal for twilight.

i never wright reviews for golf courses and have been golfing and using greenskeeper.org for the better part of ten years. but the staff in the pro shop have no pride in there course. i feel that i was knowingly mislead for the second time when i called ahead of time and asked about the pace of play, which was described as normal. apparently 5:30+ is normal at santa anita, and the asst. pros have repeatedly given the excuse that, "you get what you pay for." "ON TWO OCCATIONS I WAS TOLD THE SAME THING. No gentlemen, have some pride, get a marshal, get out there speed up play, or don't book so many tee times! What you don't do is taint a good course with badmouthing coming from its own employees.

Played here 8/22/2010 around 2 PM. The improvements to the tee boxes and the course seem to be complete. Still some work being done on the restrooms near the 18th tee box. Fairways and tee boxes were alright. Bunkers were in great condition but did not spend too much time in them. The greens could use a bit of work. Patches of the greens are starting to wear out and makes it pretty tough to make longer putts. Pace of play was about 4 and 1/2 hours but this is probably slightly faster because of the heat scaring a lot of people away. Only saw the marshall once and wish they would make sure that people would play from the right tee boxes. This could help the most with pace of play here. For the area, the price makes it worth it to play here.

Santa Anita can ease the wait by holding back groups it sends out. However, that will never happen because that will mean lost revenue. Other reviewers have noted a lack of Marshall and that is true. I usually don't see one when I play here. Howerver, having one will be helpful. If any group lags behind, that really adds to the waiting. If a group falls a half a hole behind at Brookside, they really get on you to pick up the pace. They need to do that here.

Played 7/27/2010. This course will always seem like it plays slow because we are always waiting for the group ahead to hit their next shot. Most courses that send players out with reservation usually have about 8-10 min. interval before each tee time. At Industry Hills, you will not see the group ahead of you on the tee. Here at Santa Anita, there is usually 3 groups at the #1 tee. Each group will tee off as soon as the group ahead hit their second shot, which by the way, they had to wait until the green is clear. By jamming so many groups at the start, you can probably count on waiting on each shot on all 18 holes. I've played some courses over 5 hours but since no waiting, seemed like a fast round of golf.

Out yesterday with a buddy, 7/10, a little after 2:00 pm.Paired up with a gent and his teenage son who were pleasant company. A slow but generally steady 5-hour round. I made a point of fixing extra pitch marks on the greens, but overall, I couldn't find anything to complain about except the fivesome ahead of us. The lengthy choreography on the greens had me thinking there were some bets on the line and they finished almost two holes behind. Otherwise, it was all good. Greens rolled well at medium fast, fairways lies were good, bunkers were fine. For the trafffic it gets, it holds up pretty well. They are doing renovations to the left side of the 5th green complex that includes the adjacent cart path and the 6th hole teeing grounds, so there was a temporary tee ahead of the normal spot on the 6th. The work looks like it will improve the playability of the 5th -- installing a large bunker left and forward of the green while also opening up that area. It's a muni, it can be slow, but I find it to be a consistently solid, enjoyable course.

Played on Tuesday mid-morning with business prospects. I thought that the course was in pretty good shape. There were a few brown spots which I would not expect to see until late summer. The greens appear as though they are still recovering from the recent punch. Overall, the course is well maintained given its price. However, I will never understand why it takes over 5.5 hours to play 18 holes during the week. Becuase the course appears to be somewhat easy due to the distances, my guess is that significant number of new golfers like to play there. With the lack of a marshall during the week pace of play here is just not acceptable. I have been recently playing other local courses in the same price range and they do not have a pace-of-play problem. Santa Anita needs to get its act together and do something about this problem. Complaints about playing time at the course have been posted for several years with no change by the course. Actually, this problem predates the existence of Greenskeeper. Too bad, becuase it can ruin an otherwise great course that fits many ability levels.
