This is absolutely the best course in the area. I would recommend it over the Legends course and nearby Oak Valley because the Champions has some spectacular holes. It's a little expensive and it's scorching in the summer but the condition is immaculate. I haven't been there in a while but I remember this hole early in the back nine called moonscape. It is one of the most spectacular holes I've played in the desert area. All in all, PGA of So Cal's Champions course is my favorite.

Played 4/26 10:20am. Tees & fairways in good condition. Greens are difficult to read putting premium on approach shots. I was surprised to see the traps are still in poor condition....very hard...nearly more dirt/rocks than sand....no significant rain in quite some time....what's the story with that??? This makes the Champions much inferior to the Legends where the traps are much better. Both are real tests of golf, especially after midday when the wind starts to pick up.

I finally made the drive (1 1/2 hour) to play this course. I played on Saturday March 19th. The weather was a little cool and we had to deal with a few rain showers, but I enjoyed the course. I think the layout is strong. I was surprised the course was not in a little better condition. I realize the rains have impacted all the courses, but I had played Angeles National the day before and the conditioning was markedly better. The greens on the Champions course had quite a few ball marks. The fairways were in fair condition, but that is understandable considering the damage that they had during the rains. The rough was extremely long, which placed a premium on keeping the ball on the shorter grass. We were going to try to play the Legends in the afternoon, but the rain started to come done pretty hard after the first 18. I look forward to trying it again in a month or two after it has had more time to recover. I would strongly suggest the course put in a GPS system.

Played at the crack of dawn on 3/5/05. The course overall is good shape, even with all the recent rains. On a few holes, it was cart path only, and on a couple of the par 5s, the fairways were being re-sodded. Other than that, the greens, fairways, and tee boxes were in as good a shape as could be expected. Surprisingly, the greens were very firm, and not very receptive, but they still rolled true. A beautiful day out there, and still the best complex in SoCal.

I think an explanation of the condition of the bunkers should be addressed. The new developement around the golf course has caused an increase of rodent activity on the golf course. This is especially true in the faces of the bunkers. This activity has caused a contamination of the sand with native soil. This condition can sometime make the bunker surfaces hardpaned. Also, with recent rains and because of bare soils around the perimeter of the golf course that is caused by the housing developement, we have experienced soil runoff contamination in our bunkers and on the golf course. Some of these bunkers had to be rebuilt, therefore creating inconsistancies from the newly rebuilt bunkers compared to the original ones. The plan from here forward is to refreshen all bunkers and repair rodent damage when the opportunity lends itself to do so. Completion of developement around the golf course will facilitate this process. Here at the PGA, we strive for customer satisfaction.
