If you haven't played here in a while, the course is in good shape. Fairways and rough are very lush. Greens are still recovering from aeration. Just avoid the sand... The good part is the sand is so hard that half the time your ball bounces out. If you have to hit out of them however, it is not good. For the price and the rest of the conditions, it is worth a play. (Bring a nose plug for the cows).

Played 04/02 and the course has gotten better. The fairways have improved greatly and there is some rough now,and the greens are in good shape, but the sand traps are hard as rock. Well worht the $28.00 green fee during the week (we paid $38.00 because of good friday holiday ? ) Staff was friendly as was the beverage cart girl out on the course. Even the flies and smell have gotten better but still a minor problem

Played on a Thursday morning. Found the course to be in good shape. Fairways were a bit lush; the very few bare spots I saw were where you shouldn’t be anyway. There was major damage areas on two holes, #’s 10 & 13. On hole #10 the area cordoned off was surrounding the gully on the approach to the green and on hole #13, the large area of damage was around the gully in front of the tee boxes. Free drops from either area.

The greens were in good shape as well, but playing medium to slow. Just a bit bumpy but not too detrimental. The rough was low and inconsistent. It was enough to be a problem if you landed in it, but you could find your ball. The sand traps were in bad shape. Very, very thin and hardly worth raking after you hit from them.

I found this course to be less interesting and challenging than Chino Creek. The back nine just seemed to crisscross a gully (see above) over and over. I will say, however, that given its current conditions, it’s probably one of the best bargains and best places to play for persons on a budget. It’s been very easy to get on the several times I’ve come here, and what it lacks in scenery and ambiance, it makes up with very low green fees (for April, $28 to ride during weekdays, $22 to walk) and an adequately-maintained, reasonably challenging tract.

There are assailing odors (and I mean they will actually aggressively seek you out and attack you) from the bordering water reclamation plant and the thing there with the cows but I’m going to think of them as part of the club’s ‘charm.’ One perhaps sexist note: when I arrived, there were several groups of ladies teeing off and I braced myself for a very long day. But darned if those ladies didn’t fly. We were only held up a bit once and that was on the #2 handicap hole (#13 by the way, see above.) I only saw them from the holes ahead of us moving right along about their business. Great job!

Greens needed to be cut, where a little long. Sand traps, if you call them that? No sand in them, all rock. More a waste area.

Played Butterfield this morning 3/11/10 Played behind shotgun senior mens tourney don't want to do that again, very slow pace. The course is in pretty good shape. The fairways are lush, but the rough is very unfriendly. If you hit into the rough you will be lucky to find your ball and when you do good luck on your next shot. The greens are a little bumpy but have a good even speed to them. Sand in the traps is pretty non- existent ,but sometimes that is good because the ball will just roll right on through. The course has some faults ,but for $28.00 for a round of golf with a cart it's hard to beat. The staff was as usual very friendly as was the beverage cart person.

Tee'd off this morning with my son and to my surprise, with all the rain we've had, the course was in great shape. F/W's were nice & lush and the greens were a tad slow but quite decent. Props to the super. Played with 3 gents from the OC. The pro shop staff could use some sense of humor and not come off as if every question asked of them is like a chore to answer. A warm welcome and a "Hello" can go a long way. Sorry if we're bothering you.......... but all in all, a gorgeous day to be playing golf in the IE

Just played Butterfield. The course is short even from the Blue (Championship) tees but the layout is interesting. There are some risk/rewards on the doglegs if you can get the driver up in the air. The greens are soft and receptive to approach shots but they don't roll very true and are very bumpy. I landed in one greenside bunker and felt that it was hard when I entered it. But I didn't understand just how truly hard it was until my 56 degree Sand Wedge completely failed to enter it. Subsequently sending my ball flying across the green. Thankfully, one of my playing partners interrupted my obvious frustration with a timely remark; "Oh yeah, the sand traps are a little hard here." My next thought was to question whether they had slipped some Quikcrete in the traps while making the cart paths. Anyway, the round was going good, until we were advised at about 4:45 that our round was officially over due to darkness. I was blown away and so was our group. The sun had just dropped out of view and there was plenty of light. I asked the Marshall with obvious disgust, "Are you serious?" The older gentleman replied, "Yup, new insurance rules. You can't play in darkness." As he drove away to annoy the next foursome, I could only assume that the "new insurance rules" pertain to the inherent danger of driving a golf cart without lights in the darkness. However, I could be wrong. Thankfully, though, my son and I were walking and continued our round anyway. So, be aware, if you take that Twilight discount, you are going to be hurried off the course in the minute that the sun drops below the horizon. This information, of course, was not disclosed when we checked in.
