Played Sterling Hills with a 8:46 tee time on Monday morning. I played here to escape the heat of the San Fernando Valley (103 degrees!). It was a nice 80 degree day with a little bit of humidity and very little wind. The course is quite playable. The fairways are fairly lush in the landing areas. Some of the areas between the tee boxes and landing areas, and some spots on the side of the fairways were burnt out grass. But mostly you had a decent lie if you were on or near the short grass. The tee boxes were lush but many of them were not level. You had to poke around to find a good spot to tee it up sometimes. The rough was a mixed bag. There was some 1.5 inch areas and some bare or blotchy areas. The greens were nice. They held shots well and rolled smoothly. However, they were a bit on the slow side. It was tough getting uphill puts all the way to the hole. The bunkers are not very good. There is NO sand in them. They are full of firm dirt. I was able to get out decently from the two greenside bunkers I was in. But it is difficult to control your distance, due to the firm dirt conditions. Overall, I recommend playing here if you can get a discount.

Walked 36 from the Blues on Saturday 5/20 with Nickesquire, Mr. Bugs and my buddy Shon for the first round. POP was 4 1/2 hrs and we had a great time! Shon and I went around again after lunch paying the $33 replay rate. POP for round 2 was 4:20. I'd say Sterling Hills is a moderately difficult walk, with some hills and a few long walks between holes...especially between 9 and 10.

Sterling Hills has been on and off my current play list due to conditioning issues, and it had been over a year since I had been there. It looks like things are starting to look up. The range was set up to hit off of grass, which was good start to the day.

The highlight of the course has always been the greens. Nothing has changed there. They were holding shots well, and pretty slick in the morning. Putts held their lines, and some putts were dropping for us all. In the afternoon, they did bump up and slow down a bit. We didn't hole near as many putts on the second 18.

The fairways have good coverage and are pretty lush and green, with the occasional bare spot to be found. The fairways are MUCH improved since the last time I was there.

Rough is a bit splotchy and inconsistent, but around the greens it's mostly lush and thick.

The negatives were the tee boxes and the traps. Most tee boxes had decent coverage, but they were shaggy and almost all of them need leveled.

The sand...well it's not really sand, is it. It's well maintained dirt. I was only in one bunker in the first round, and was able to get out of it. The second round I was in a few more of them, and struggled to get the club underneath the ball effectively.

Customer service was very good all around, and we saw the beverage cart many times. Food in the grill between rounds was very good. Overall, we had a really nice day at Sterling Hills, and the conditions have improved enough that I'll put it back onto the 'play' list. I'd recommend it.

Played the Blues (6395/71.1/127) in 4H, 35M Saturday morning. Played with lamitchw, Sean and Joe in clear, breezy conditions with temps in the 70's. Fun group to play with! The tees had good coverage and only the par 3's needed divot attention. However, numerous tees could use leveling. I had to move 3-4 times from my desired tee spot because I would have been standing in a low spot on the tee ground otherwise. The fairways had good coverage and were decent, semi lush. The rough has many bare hardpan areas, with a combination of thin coverage with some lush to very lush areas mixed in. Only part of the course I rated below average. The greens here are undulating and firm, but they still held full shots well. They were quick today and rolling very nice. We definitely played tournament pins, as numerous holes were right beside or on top of crests/plateaus that would quickly turn a 2-3' putt into a 15' come backer if you were barely long. The traps were in very good condition, nicely maintained with dark brown sand. The customer service was excellent. I prepaid for the 4some ahead of time and after mistakenly charging 2 of our group, they quickly and efficiently refunded the excess charges at the turn. Nice starter and the Marshall was out riding around trying to speed up POP. Drink cart out making numerous rounds. Had fish tacos in the restaurant after the round, very good and decently priced. Good layout overall with many fun/interesting golf holes up/down rolling hills. Par 71 with only 1 par 5 in the first 15 holes. Decent course in decent condition. Recommended.

Played Sterling Hills on 4/10/17 feed off around 7:30am. Paid $42 included cart, bucket, and unlimited golf. It's a new deal they are having and it's totally worth it if you have time to play at least 27 holes.

Their driving range was okay.. mats were really worn. It was good enough to hit a small bucket to get the body going.

There were a lot of tee boxes that were not leveled and were not mowed. Doesent really bother me too much but they can work on that.

Fairways were lush, some areas were thin but not bad for a california course with the droughts and stuff. Couldn't really tell apart from the fairway and the rough.

Greens were awesome. They rolled really smooth and held their line great. Best part of the course was he greens and that is how it should be!

Layout was really fun.. makes you think about some shots.. some holes challenges your alignment.. it sets you up certain ways. Fun challenging layout.. first time here would definitely play here again.

I was matched up with Jon & James on the first twilight tee time, extremely enjoyable guys to play with. We played the Blues (6395/71.1/127) in clear, fairly calm conditions with temps in the 80's. The POP was a leisurely 4H, 30M, we rarely waited or held up the group behind. The course was fairly busy today. SH is an okay layout set over rolling hills with numerous fun and interesting holes. The tees were lush, mostly level and only the par 3's needed divot attention. The fairways were fairly lush. The many areas they have previously resodded are filling in and becoming more and more playable with each visit. The primary rough is about 50/50 lush/thin. The outer edges are mostly hardpan, you can really tell where they concentrate their watering. The large greens are almost completely recovered from their spring aeration. They are still firm, but they held full shots well and putted fairly smooth and medium fast. I find the greens here usually have hardly a straight putt with lots of subtle break, and a few greens have hills or crests that produce severe breaks. The traps were decently maintained. An okay layout set over rolling hills with numerous fun and interesting holes. The customer service was excellent from both the Pro Shop & the Starter. Drink cart gal was very pleasant and around numerous times. No GPS on the carts, average driving range. Recommended as a slightly above average course in slightly above average condition.

Played the Blues (6395/71.1/127) in clear, breezy conditions with temps in the low 80's. The POP was typical Sunday afternoon slow, around 4H, 45M. I was matched up with an inebriated 2some that were usually hilarious. They certainty kept me entertained as we waited. The tees were fairly lush, mostly level and only the par 3's needed divot attention. The fairways were probably the best I have ever seen them here, I would now classify them as good. Fairly lush, the many fairway areas they had previously resodded @ different times are filling in and becoming more and more playable. The traps are always nicely raked. However I have a hard time grading them highly because they are more dark brown dirt than sand. The customer service was excellent from both the Pro Shop & the Starter. No GPS on the carts, average driving range. No drink cart, but they do have a snack shop available @ the turn. I was bummed I couldn't get an earlier time for my foursome until I arrived an hour early in heavy fog. Things cleared up nicely shortly after 9, and remained pleasant the rest of the day...

The course was in better shape than the last time I was here a couple years ago. Many fairways were roped off and the sod has filled in pretty well, 6/10.

Bunkers were well maintained, pretty soft compared to what I expected after seeing how dark the sand was. 6/10

Greens were in good shape and FAST in the morning. This combined with difficult pin placements combined for a rough day putting (starting with an Els-like 6-putt on #1). Instead of getting harder in the afternoon, they were much softer and slower. 7/10

Overall, a fun layout. #6 will get in your head with water on the left, but you can drive past most of the trouble and give yourself a good angle to the green over the land if you keep right...

There's several holes with large trees on either side of the fairway, so a straight drive is very rewarding to the eyes!

Service was friendly, we saw the cart girl 3 times in the morning, but not at all after 2. However, the bathrooms in the main clubhouse could use a powerwash to get rid of a heavy urine smell... 4/10

It was a long drive for me to meet with friends, but a great deal for a full day of golf. The course met all of my expectations for the price.

You could have used a sun dial to time the 4some in front of us. Par 71 layout where you do not see the 2nd par 5 until the 16th hole, which I see as a minus. No GPS on the carts, average driving range. However, okay layout overall set over rolling hills with numerous fun and interesting holes. The tees had decent coverage, were mostly level and only the par 3's needed divot attention. I would have thought with all the winter rains that the many fairway areas they had previously resodded @ different times would be full and really blended in. However, several are still roped off and the now open ones do not play as well as they look. More thin than lush with little cushion. Many sections of most fairways are flat out hard, seems like they need to aerate their fairways? The rough has mostly thin coverage with some lush areas mixed in. The outer edges are mostly hardpan, you can really tell where they concentrate their watering. The large greens were smooth & putted medium fast. While firm, they still held full shots well. Started as a single and was a 4some, playing with Brian, Jason & John by the back 9, when we joined up with slower 4somes in front of us. The tees had good coverage, mostly level and only the par 3's needed divot attention. The fairways were mostly roped off and decent. Many fairways have been resodded @ different times and now have 3 or more types of grass. The rough has many bare hardpan areas, mostly thin coverage with some lush areas mixed in. The greens are undulating, medium fast and firm, but they still held full shots well. I find the greens here hard to putt, there is more break than I read. Hardly a straight putt anywhere with lots of subtle break, and a few greens have hills or crests that produce severe breaks. The traps were in good condition, nicely maintained with dark brown sand.
