Played Sterling Hills yesterday morning. Typical winter conditions. Do not be above the hole. The greens moderate to fast. The fairways green, but thin due to winter conditions. You do get a decent amount of roll. I’ve always thought the bunker sand is quite good here compared to other public golf courses around the LA and Ventura area. Then to top it off, a lunch ticket. The more I play Sterling, the better I like it. Friendly staff.

Played today in a small tournament, teeing off around 10:40. The course is in very good condition, lots of good turf and fast greens. The range and putting green are on the small side, but most everyone was able to practice if they wanted.

Greens were great. Fast and smooth. We had difficulty getting used to the speed today. It was also difficult to get an approach shot to stick. It was challenging.

Fairways were good. Lots of coverage and very few bad lies. Lots of roll out on most shots.

Rough was fairly good. Some sporadic bare areas and some perpetual problems that will never grow in, especially around the many eucalyptus trees. Deep enough in most areas to catch your ball but not too penal.

Bunkers were very good. A couple had standing water but most were nicely groomed with good beach sand.

Tees (we played the Blues) were level except for a few holes on the back. Good grass coverage and not too many divots on the par threes.

Overall I thought the course was in pretty good condition. I have not been here in a while and my recollection of the course was it can be in rough condition at times but not today. Too bad my game wasn’t up to speed. I will recommend playing here.

Played 2/15/2024. Course in great shape even in the wintertime (good drainage). Tee boxes and fairways emerald green, green, green. The greens were very fast, tricky, but true. This course is well worth the money and a good challenge for mid-level golfers (80-100 players). Friday afternoon was crowded, but we still got around in 4 1/2 hours.

Played a round here yesterday. The course was in very good condition. Tee boxes were in good condition. Fairways were in very good conditions. Bunkers were in very good conditions. Greens were rolling fast. Overall 4 stars! Got a great deal on moose golf. Driving range and putting green were very nice. Will definitely be back.

Played 5-23-23 early morning as a single, playing in 2 hours and 45 minutes on a semi damp morning. Tee boxes were just okay, a little shaggy and I did have to search for a level spot on some of them.... Continue »

Played 5-23-23 early morning as a single, playing in 2 hours and 45 minutes on a semi damp morning. Tee boxes were just okay, a little shaggy and I did have to search for a level spot on some of them. Fairways were in decent shape, there are a few different types of grass but they were all mostly green and cut to the same length. Rough is the same mix as the fairways, it was cut fairly short along fairways and about two to three inches around greens. Was in one greenside bunker that had thin compacted sand, and one fairway bunker that had a good layer of very soft brown sand. I did notice the liner showing through on a few of the greenside bunkers. Greens were in pretty good condition rolling medium/slow, fairly smooth and playing a little on the soft side. Overall conditions are okay for playing, but I have seen it better.

Tee boxes are a mess with divots and bare spots. Fairways have numerous divots and several types of grasses. Rough is weeds or bare areas. Traps are hard pan and not well maintained. Greens are the on... Continue »

Tee boxes are a mess with divots and bare spots. Fairways have numerous divots and several types of grasses. Rough is weeds or bare areas. Traps are hard pan and not well maintained. Greens are the only bright spot, some ball marks but putt well. Hopefully the management will invest in the course as they did in the banquet room and pro shop.

Played 10-11-22 early morning walking as a threesome, finishing in 3 hours and 45 minutes with no waiting and no body behind us. Tee boxes were mostly level with decent coverage and minimal divot damage on par threes. Fairways were mostly in good shape, there are some thin spots but mostly semi-lush with nice lies and decent roll out. Holes 7 and 16 did have a good sized portion of the fairway roped off and labeled GUR where they are letting the grass grow in, it looks pretty full so maybe they will be removing the ropes pretty soon. Rough was cut mostly low along fairways and around greens with some minor thicker spots. Was in one greenside bunker that was well groomed and had a good layer of nice white sand. Greens were in good condition, rolling smooth at medium pace, and playing a little soft. Overall conditions were good in the playing areas, and a little rougher farther out.

When I decided on the date for Sterling Hills Golf Club GK Plays I knew with the most strict water restrictions having been in effect for 2 months prior and Ventura Country getting very little of the monsoon rain other parts of SoCal have received, their playing conditions were not going to be their best, but IMO they were still - Very Good! But lets be honest, besides Sterling Hills Golf Club being a great supporter of our GK Community, the weather in Camarillo in August is about as good as it gets in SoCal and that factored as well. Low 80's light ocean breeze. At least 10 to 15 degrees cooler than nearby San Fernando Valley.

I loved all the improvements to the facilities since my last round their months ago. New more conveinent practice putting green near the driving range/first tee, refurbished 19th Hole Pub/Grill/Patio and new paint. Being a local to Ventura County it's been awesome seeing Sterling Hills Golf Club continue to improve the entire experience over the last few years. They've come a LONG way in that time period and continue to progress.

Our outing ran smoothly with excellent friendly services at all levels.

The facilities are superb for hosting groups large or small.

Highly Recommended.

I’d been wanting to get back here for a while and just couldn’t pass up the chance to play it with the GK group on 8-14-22. Johnny and the friendly staff had carts and range balls waiting for us. The grass range is small but served the purpose. The putting green looks like it’s recently been enlarged. The course conditions were mixed. The fairways were varied from lush to thin with a few bare spots. The couple of bunkers I was in had a decent amount of sand. The greens were smooth but had inconsistent speeds and lots of undulations making for some very interesting-and lots of missed- putts. The only thing that really didn’t thrill me was that the forward tees have been moved up about 500 yards since last time I played. Although there is still plenty of challenge for a short hitter, several of the new tee boxes were placed out in the fairway seeming much like an afterthought making it all a bit less satisfying. Although I will likely risk a higher score, I’ll play the red/white combo next time. The after-party was fun as always. There was the usual assortment of goodies courtesy of Linksoul, OnCore and Golfmoose and even a complimentary lunch. It really doesn’t get much better than that. Thank you, Johnny and Sterling Hills for a great day.
