Played 5-23-23 early morning as a single, playing in 2 hours and 45 minutes on a semi damp morning. Tee boxes were just okay, a little shaggy and I did have to search for a level spot on some of them. Fairways were in decent shape, there are a few different types of grass but they were all mostly green and cut to the same length. Rough is the same mix as the fairways, it was cut fairly short along fairways and about two to three inches around greens. Was in one greenside bunker that had thin compacted sand, and one fairway bunker that had a good layer of very soft brown sand. I did notice the liner showing through on a few of the greenside bunkers. Greens were in pretty good condition rolling medium/slow, fairly smooth and playing a little on the soft side. Overall conditions are okay for playing, but I have seen it better.

Tee boxes are a mess with divots and bare spots. Fairways have numerous divots and several types of grasses. Rough is weeds or bare areas. Traps are hard pan and not well maintained. Greens are the only bright spot, some ball marks but putt well. Hopefully the management will invest in the course as they did in the banquet room and pro shop.

Played 10-11-22 early morning walking as a threesome, finishing in 3 hours and 45 minutes with no waiting and no body behind us. Tee boxes were mostly level with decent coverage and minimal divot damage on par threes. Fairways were mostly in good shape, there are some thin spots but mostly semi-lush with nice lies and decent roll out. Holes 7 and 16 did have a good sized portion of the fairway roped off and labeled GUR where they are letting the grass grow in, it looks pretty full so maybe they will be removing the ropes pretty soon. Rough was cut mostly low along fairways and around greens with some minor thicker spots. Was in one greenside bunker that was well groomed and had a good layer of nice white sand. Greens were in good condition, rolling smooth at medium pace, and playing a little soft. Overall conditions were good in the playing areas, and a little rougher farther out.

When I decided on the date for Sterling Hills Golf Club GK Plays I knew with the most strict water restrictions having been in effect for 2 months prior and Ventura Country getting very little of the monsoon rain other parts of SoCal have received, their playing conditions were not going to be their best, but IMO they were still - Very Good! But lets be honest, besides Sterling Hills Golf Club being a great supporter of our GK Community, the weather in Camarillo in August is about as good as it gets in SoCal and that factored as well. Low 80's light ocean breeze. At least 10 to 15 degrees cooler than nearby San Fernando Valley.

I loved all the improvements to the facilities since my last round their months ago. New more conveinent practice putting green near the driving range/first tee, refurbished 19th Hole Pub/Grill/Patio and new paint. Being a local to Ventura County it's been awesome seeing Sterling Hills Golf Club continue to improve the entire experience over the last few years. They've come a LONG way in that time period and continue to progress.

Our outing ran smoothly with excellent friendly services at all levels.

The facilities are superb for hosting groups large or small.

Highly Recommended.

I’d been wanting to get back here for a while and just couldn’t pass up the chance to play it with the GK group on 8-14-22. Johnny and the friendly staff had carts and range balls waiting for us. The grass range is small but served the purpose. The putting green looks like it’s recently been enlarged. The course conditions were mixed. The fairways were varied from lush to thin with a few bare spots. The couple of bunkers I was in had a decent amount of sand. The greens were smooth but had inconsistent speeds and lots of undulations making for some very interesting-and lots of missed- putts. The only thing that really didn’t thrill me was that the forward tees have been moved up about 500 yards since last time I played. Although there is still plenty of challenge for a short hitter, several of the new tee boxes were placed out in the fairway seeming much like an afterthought making it all a bit less satisfying. Although I will likely risk a higher score, I’ll play the red/white combo next time. The after-party was fun as always. There was the usual assortment of goodies courtesy of Linksoul, OnCore and Golfmoose and even a complimentary lunch. It really doesn’t get much better than that. Thank you, Johnny and Sterling Hills for a great day.

I played here with the GK plays outing this past Sunday. Always enjoy getting together with this group and seeing some familiar faces and some new ones.
Everyone form the course was friendly and helpful during checkin and after the round in the grill. We saw the cart a couple of times out on the course.
We had very good golf weather with a temp around 78 and very little wind which was a nice break from the 100 degree days we have benn having around my place.
Unfortunately the course has suffered a bit form the heat.Like most courses it could really use a lot more water.The tee boxes are a bit thin but mostly level. The fairways while providing lots of roll out had many very dry hard areas which made for some real thin lies. The rough was varied. In some places it was up and some places non existent.
The bunkers were a bit thin and crusty in the two I was in.
The greens looked very good and had very few old ball marks but ran a little slow for my taste. Overall I really enjoyed the layout of the course and would play here again if conditions improved a bit.

Played today in my first GK Plays outing! I had played it only once before, around a year ago. I don't want to sound negative, but I would say it wasn't QUITE in as good of shape as I remember it. The greens were fine, and so were the bunkers, and the tee boxes; but the fairways and rough were a little spotty in terms of coverage. Not bad, or unplayable, just not as plentiful coverage as what I remember.

Maybe it's just cause it's the peak of summer heat, plus no rain, plus water restrictions cause of drought (and also the fact that the other time I played it, I want to say it was spring or fall, or maybe even winter). Now that I type all that (about the heat & lack of water), I'm sure that's what it was. In that case, you can't really blame the course. They have to comply with the water restrictions placed on them by the city and/or county, and they obviously can't control the weather.

Aside from that, it's a fun course with a cool layout, which has several tees to choose from. If you play it all the way back, I'm sure it's quite challenging. From the middle tees, not as much , but you still need to know where to miss, as there are plenty of bunkers, a few other hazards, and many elevated greens, which are fairly large, with significant undulation.

It's a good value, family owned, with a beautiful clubhouse and a pretty good practice facility (including part-time grass driving range, and a chipping green with bunker).

Played Sterling today, 5/2, 10*45am start. Check in & Starter nice people. I mentioned I'm with the GK website. Tee boxes were in very good condition. Fairways were nice, a bit thin, not super lush, but good coverage. Rough not very deep, easy to hit out of. Rough near outskirts of the course gets dicey, mixed long weeds ect, but it's really far out. Greens were firm. Rolled really nice, med-fast. Collar areas cut very tight, in great shape. Allows for the putter from sometimes 15' off the green if one doesn't trust a wedge. Bunkers fine, with an inch or 2 of loose sand on top of firmer ground. POP was around 4 hours. No drink cart on a Monday, don't know about other days. "Free" lunch with green fee. Food fine, although I would prefer $5 off green fee instead. Overall Sterling is in pretty good shape & I had a good time. I recommend & I'll be back!

Played in a charity scramble today 9/30, teeing off on the 3rd hole in Santa Ana winds. I'm thinking conservatively it's been 15 years since I've played this course — back before it went into a bit of decline and now again after it has recovered. Long enough that I had no memory of most of the layout and vague memory of the rest. I found the course in pretty nice overall shape. Teeing grounds only stick out in my mind when there is an issue and I can't think of any — all green at an appropriate height and level. Fairways were in good shape leaning towards tight with good rollout and if there were any brown or bare spots I don't recall them. Rough was mostly very playable. We never played out of a bunker but they were all groomed and looked nice. I walked in one and it was on the firm side, leaving only very shallow footprints. The greens were quick, clean and in good shape as was the immediate surroundings for short game. The clubhouse is nice with a beautiful view out the back side, but they are doing some upgrades so there is a little construction going on, especially in the pro shop. The golf carts are basic with no electronics for yardage, but they ran well enough. From the golf conditions perspective, I definitely recommend the place and am glad to see it in good shape after years of negative reports. As an aside, the tournament was a little bare-bones. No goody bags, sponsors on the tees or giveaways, no coolers around the course or even a circulating beverage cart. For $165 bucks base price I found that aspect surprising and lacking, but I would attribute it to the tournament organizer's choices/budget and not the course. The BBQ tri-tip and chicken dinner buffet put on afterward was very good and the sides and salads that went with it were worth noting, and I attribute that to the course facilities/kitchen.
