I've played this course numerous times and, to be honest, it's always our last choice (except for Shorecliffs). So, I had very low expectations...gotta say I was pleasantly surprised. Pebble, it ain't, but it's not horrible. They are definitely making a concerted effort to improve conditions of everything. Range personnel were very polite. It's a drag that the range is about 1000 yards from the clubhouse (separate parking lot on a whole different street; can be confusing for 1st timers). Also, don't like that the range is astroturf. Range balls were average but $6 for about 80 balls ain't bad.

They've repaved the parking lot recently; are preparing to lay new sidewalks.

Starter was very polite. I bought their discount card on whim last year (mostly cuz it's also good at Coyote Hills). It saved me $13 yesterday ($27 instead of $40 to walk). For $27 on a Friday, RSJ is just fine.

The course: fairways are cut very tight and I like that they've let the rough grow up. Rough in some places is 3 inches thick. It defines the fairways nicely. And, is very tough to hit out of...that rough cucuya (or however you spell it) stuff! You are definitely penalized if you miss the fairways.

Greens were very average. Not very consistent. Very slow. Lots of downhills putts you'd think would scream fast were dead slow.

Bunkers were fine. Tee boxes fine, too. They are rebuilding the tees boxes on #11, 12 and 13 so they were closed with temp tee boxes that shortened #11 by 50 yards; #12 by 100 yards; and #13 by 20 yards. They had a sign in pro shop warning of this. No biggie.

They've also gone to a new system for pin placement. Instead of front/mid/back they now have broken the greens up into six zones (1-6). They have a handout in the clubhouse with the maps of the greens and currently pin placement. Was actually very helpful especially cuz a lot of the greens here are very severe slopes and hills.

Only complaint (and it's not the course's fault). We were a threesome; they placed a single with us. Nice enough guy but, man, was he slow. We were walking and he was in a cart. His shots were always 50+ yards shorter than ours. Instead of driving out to his ball and hitting it while we walked up, he'd drive to his ball and sit there and wait for us to catch up. We told him politely he should go on and hit, but dont' think he understood much english:-). Then he'd take four practice swings; then align his feet; then look ahead four times...you get the picture. So, all you folks out there who think you're tiger, but hit is only as far as Tiger can kick it, hurry up and hit. It added a good 45 minutes to our round and affected our play with the frustration. I supposed we could have played ahead of him as a walking threesome and he wouldn't have kept pace as a single driving!

In conclusion, don't pay full price at RSJ, and don't play on the weekends. But, don't shy away from the course either. They're making an effort.

We go to Sycuan every year in June for a three day golf trip. Great place. Willow Glen is the more difficult of the two courses there. Lots of variation and changes in elevation. Great course. Greens were punched about two weeks ago but are coming back nicely. Just #2 and #4 and big holes in them, but they were almost grown back in. Not perfect greens, but not horrendous. No real rough to speak of. Wonderful place to stay and play golf.

Did our annual two night, three day, six round trip. Can't say enough about Singing Hills/Sycuan. Great courses. Great customer service. Great bargain. Oak Glen was in good shape. The greens were very good, considering they had been punched around the first of June. No signs of it. It's shorter course, but trees and wind will get you. No real rough to speak of. Good course to play when you go for package. Regular price for first round; then second round each day is just $12. Can't beat it. A nice course and resort.

Played two rounds on June 9th for my birthday. Conditions are improving. Greens are a little better than last time I was here on May 20th. Still lots of bare spots in the greens. On #11 there's a huge bare spot in the back left area of the green. In the morning the pin was placed very near that spot, which seemed silly to me. On our second round, the pin had been relocated to another position. Pace of play was great. They were starting off the back, which I hate cuz the back is so much harder. Gives you no time to find your groove. Chris is pro shop is great. Very helpful. Nice deal with replay round of $35. I still wish they'd let the rough grow up more; would make for a true test. But, most likely would also slow play considerably and slow play here is already a problem on the weekends.

Played 6/1. Course in decent enough shape. Greens were spongy and slow. Fairways had quite a few dead areas. Bunker sand is inconsistent. They had just aeriated (sp) the fairway on #14 (uphill par 5). It was clean and place. Course is a little rough around the edges, but I personally think it's a deal for $48 weekday, $65 weekend, but I'm a south orange county resident and would find myself paying $90 or more for the equivalent course on a weekend (which is why I don't play weekends)!

Course is in fabulous shape. Only complaint would be, like others have said, the bunkers. It's either heavy fluffy sand or hardpan. No consistency. Some of the tee boxes were a little hacked up. But, the rough is lush; defines the well manicured fairways nicely. Greens rolled true. Even the fairway areas on 17 that are usually pretty thin are growing in fairly nicely now. Can't go wrong here. Awesome customer service, as usual.

We play here once a year on a discount. Conditions right now are excellent. Greens were quick and rolled true. Fairways were well maintained. Rough around the greens was very thick. Bunkers were a little thin. Nice customer service except for the kids who hop on your cart at the end and ride with you to your car, then want a huge tip to basically barely wipe down your clubs. My 9 year old does a better job with less attitude. And, she gets a bigger tip.

Play here often. Must say, wasn't too impressed today. Greens were not so great. Looks like they verticut them this week; some sand. LOTS of unrepaired ball marks and the scars left by them. Also, the front third of the green on #5 had lots of bare spots. So, I give the greens a 5. Fairways were fine. Rough wsa pretty non existent. So much better when they let it grow out some. Course wasn't too lush. Can't imagine why. Usually it's very lush. It looked like it would in August. Lots of unrepaired divots in fairways; especially #12 and #15. Conditions weren't horrible; i've just seen it so much better. Also, the pace of place was abysmal! 12:30 tee time. Finished at 6pm! Now I know why I usually avoid weekend golf.

mbsission...could you be more specific about the issue you have with management? i've played this course dozens of times over the years and have almost always had no problem with staff. i don't work for the course. just curious.

First time on course since the addition of new bunkers, trees, and new Green tees (6700 yards long, now). It's a whole new experience. Great course and great value. Only complaint: When we made the tee time they told us greens were great. They'd punched over a month ago. We were suprised to arrive today to find they greens punched with the small holes and lightly sanded. Very disappointing. In the pro shop they were telling all who called that the north greens were better than the south's, but I walked on one of the south greens at the snack shop up top and that green was in better shape than any on the north. Whatcha gonna do?

Greens are still too bumpy from aeration over 6 weeks ago. With recent rain, fairways are finally turning green. Lots of divot damage on fairways. Rough was lush. With the wind blowing, #15 and 18 can be very tough. Not worth full price.
