Our monthly group got four spots at Hansen Dam this past Saturday and it was a scorching hot day with our first tee time at 10:40am. Carts were preferred under hot sun as walking would have been a real energy drain. I was in the second group off and we played from our customary white tees with this ensemble.

Course conditions are bizarrely better it seemed on the front nine than the back nine. The greens were all pretty consistent - holding shots well, rolling pretty true and running at medium-fast speeds - no complaints there. But the grass seemed to be somewhat lusher and there was better coverage on the front in the fairways. The rough was definitely thick in some areas and it's not hard to lose a ball in there right now. Bunkers were okay/average - nothing spectacular, but nothing too bad to make a fuss over. Tee boxes were fine.

There was no cart service and that was disappointing on such a hot day, but more to that point, in order to secure the four spots, we paid a pretty outrageous $82 each, which included the cart but did NOT include range balls for warming up. I found that pretty insane to be honest. The carts are on the newer side and have good GPS, but no coolers for ice on the sides.

At a normal greens fee I don't think all of these factors would have rubbed me the wrong way, but we paid kind of a premium price for a non-premium experience. My next solo visit I won't have any of these complaints I'm sure and I'll just go back to enjoying Hansen Dam like I almost always have before.

Played the Dam last Sat 5/4, 8:20 start. I've been playing Hansen for 30+ years & it's in pretty good condition now (as are most courses after the rainy winter.) For those that haven't played it, there is a range, hitting down into a valley/dip from mats. Good for warm up, not so for dialing yardage in on clubs. They have decent putting & chipping areas. Restaurant opens at 8*am on weekends. I didn't go in this time. They have full bar, NO BEV CART on course. After 9th you do pass the restaurant. On to course conditions;

Tee boxes are fair, usually a flat area can be found with good grass coverage.

Fairways are in great muni condition, as good as they get. A pleasure to hit from.

Greens are ok. They were punched a month ago & haven't healed as well as most would. Hansen Dam has always had an issue with the Greens healing slowly. No idea why. Still cleaning sand off balls, but the ball rolled ok, if you hit it. Speed SLOW.

Collar areas are shaved back from the greens up to 10 yards giving the option to putt from off the green if desired. Near perfect condition.

The Rough is mostly good, can get into some weedy bunch grass in some areas, but mostly 3-4" cut, penal but not killer.

POP was 4H 35. Slow front, picked up nicely on the back. No Marshalls at LA City course.
Starter was friendly, they do require ID now (fallout from Bot Res disaster?)
Carts are near new. They have GPS & Bluetooth speakers. Comfy seats.

Overall I recommend. I'll be back in a few weeks before the real heat of summer. Enjoy it.

Approach shots will repel off the greens unless you aim for the very front. Just keep it in mind when you play and you’ll be fine.

Played a New Year's Day round with Mattias at Hansen Dam after getting a late tee time online two days previous. We had an 11:30 tee time and played from the blue tees with two singles who were good fun to accompany us. We rode and honestly the cart was a shambles!

Course conditions are pretty good across the board right now with everything being 'pretty good' to 'good' and nothing being 'terrible' or 'outstanding.' The greens are in good shape and roll nicely and even pretty quick but a few too many ball marks out there for any golfer's liking. Fairways were in good shape but still a lot of water-logged sections that have not dried out yet after the rains (luckily it was not CPO). Rough was totally playable and I was not in any bunkers but did not hear too many complaints. Tee boxes were good enough - flat and decent coverage.

There was no cart service at any point during the entire day and the usually convenient snack shop window at the turn is now closed so you have to go inside ... not necessarily a big deal but won't do much to help the POP. And speaking of POP, we actually moved pretty nicely and finished the round in about four and a half hours. No complaints there, especially on a gorgeous winter SoCal afternoon.

I enjoy this layout still with the exception of the 10th and 11th holes which are some of the worst you'll find in the LA area, but hey - just have to get through it. Both 'closing' holes on the front and back nines are quite good, as are many in-between. It's a good, solid track that isn't going to 'wow' you for weeks afterwards, but you'll probably not mind coming back sometime soon.

Just a quick note about the condition of the greens. I played Hansen on the morning of Thursday 9/21, and all the greens had been punched with very small holes. Most of the greens had the shallow-line type punches, and a few had small holes (3mm diameter?) that went straight down into the ground. It made the greens somewhat slow and unpredictable. No sand which was good. Mostly playable. That is all.

Got out to Hansen Dam with a buddy this week for the first time in over two years. I was quite excited to see what kind of shape the course would be in after this wet winter and it really did not disappoint too much at all. Overall the course is in good shape right now.

Played from the blue tees and got a cart as there are some decent walks between nines and a little bit of elevations to work with. It's definitely walkable, just wasn't feeling it on what I anticipated was going to be a very hot day.

Conditions, as previously stated, were good across the board. Nothing exceptionally great, nothing glaringly bad. Greens are in good shape, run medium-fast, hold shots and lines quite well. No complaints there. Fairways are mostly in good shape with some thin areas and a few lush ones to boot. Rough is of mixed length, tee boxes are a little beat up but playable, and the bunkers have a decent layer of sand but hardly fluffy - really depends on the hole.

POP moved pretty decently throughout the round and we finished in around four and a half hours. There was no cart service on the course all day, but there is a very convenient snack shop at the turn before you head over to the 10th hole.

All in all it's a very good experience right now at Hansen Dam and all at a fair price.

The course is playing pretty nicely right now, with the greens maybe needing just another week or two before returning back to their normal above-average conditions. You can just barely see the punch marks from aeration season and there's just a little sand remaining in your pockets at the end of the round. But otherwise things are really good and the putting is just fine. Fairways are mostly green and lush, and the rough is not too penal. I wasn't in any bunkers all day so can't comment but they looked fine. Definitely recommend the course right now.

Out Friday 4/28 for a 2:50 start as single joining a threesome. Conditions overall are very good with minor exceptions. Everything is green with good coverage— teeing grounds mostly level, fairways still had some runout to them. The rough was as lush as it gets here and where it was green it was frequently penal. There were definitely stretches where you could lose ball and while I didn't, there were a couple of occasions when I thought I had. I was in way more bunkers than usual for me and they were firm. The ball usual sat up in them and while they were playable, fluffy doesn't live here. Green side was good for short game and the greens themselves were the point of reservation. They are still showing the aeration pattern as they are in recovery and will probably need another week before they are fully normal. They were not slow but there was a discernible deceleration on longer putts to factor in. I thought they putt better than they looked. While not crisp, the speed was still medium and the balls tracked pretty well. I didn't see much diverting or jumpiness in the rolls. If you come out expecting clean greens you might be put off, but if you know what you are getting into, the adjustments are minor and consistent. Don't let it stop you from getting a round in here. I'd play it again without hesitation. Pace was unusually good for a Friday afternoon and we got around in something like 4.25 hours. A bit warm for a good portion of the round, it was perfect at the end. I think I paid under $15 to walk which made it a ridiculously good deal. Good times.

Apologies in advance for the brevity. Played Friday 2/11 teeing off at 1:30 as single joining a three-some. For this time of year the overall conditions are pretty solid and better than some as munis go. A fair amount of rollout in the fairways, bunkers were generally groomed and a little on the firm side, the greens were quick and reasonably clean. The group I was in were a bit slow and hindered the pace of those behind us, but we got around in under 4.5 hrs and enough dusk at the end for us and a couple of following groups to finish. I played like goose poop (there was a little of that along with the geese), but I'd happily play it again.
