Played Friday morning, walking on as a single, fourth group off. PoP was 4:05 and green fee $27 to walk. Found the course in very good condition. In fact, the greens were as good as Poa can get ... aeration from a few weeks ago has completely healed (you couldn't even tell which side was punched) ... they plan to aerate the second half next week. Every putt ran true and the greens held any decent approach. Tee boxes were recently punched which had no effect, bunkers were maintained, rough is always cut short here, and fairways only had a few thin areas. Really do not understand the last two reviewers: 'netplus' only has one post, so maybe he had a bone to pick, and the other guy just sounds grumpy. Believe me, Lakewood is worth playing for sure. Please let us know if you think otherwise ... best deal in the LB area. Highly recommended. Oh, yeah. Titlist reps were there doing ball fitting and handed me 4 ProV1's to try out. Very cool, Titlist, thanks!

Lakewood may have the name country club associated with the course, but in no way is this course anywhere near a country club.

Played in a tournament Saturday morning, 9/7/13, at 9:30 on a hot sunny day with not much wind. Typical conditions for Lakewood - pretty good greens that accepted shots and rolled well at medium sped, thin dry fairways, inconsistent rough. Sand and tees OK. Areas away from the main playing areas were very dried out and hard. Slow pace (usual for Lakewood) - >5.5 hours and less wind than usual made for a long hot day. Saw the cart girl frequently. Ranger was driving toward us down the cart path as we were teeing off on #14 - kept coming even after a wave-off. Then told me how he didn't understand what my problem was with him driving through our sightline.

Walked on at Lakewood this AM, waited about 40 min for the starter to get me out on the course. Hot day, must've got into the mid nineties today. Greens are in great shape, bunkers a bit thin, and fairways provide nice lies. No rough to speak of. Just a great golf deal for for your hard earned dollars. Recommended.

IMO Lakewood GC is one of the best values for anyone living in the SBay or LB area. Conditions are mostly consistent and the green fees are low ($27 walking weekday, $14 senior rate). Nice mixture of long and short holes (the 220 par 3 12th has to be one of the tougher par 3's in LA Co.) and the kikuyu rough can be a bear ... it'll keep you honest. Sure, they put out 5-somes and PoP can be slow if you tee off later in the day, but for an affordable round of golf in the blue collar community of Long Beach, you can't beat it. Excellent practice chipping green, too.

Played in a tournament yesterday (Saturday). We were scheduled to go out starting at 10:00 but they sent us out at 9:00, mixed in with another tournament, instead. Kind of weird but anything that gets us done earlier works with me. This did that. The course was in pretty good shape. The fairways were generally lush with some bare spots. The greens were pretty good - not as fast as I have seen them but still of decent speed and generally they rolled true. The third green was open and it is slower than the other greens. It still looks iffy on viability and there were numerous plugs in it. The rough was not that great, with numerous areas where they were not watering it so that the ball would be resting on dirt rather than grass. We played in a little over five hours. The front nine seemed a lot faster for some reason although I did not check the time so I could not say if that was perception or reality. The staff as always was courteous and the cart lady was seen several times.

Lakewood really doesn't change much, I mean, it's a county course run by AG so they are trying to maximize their budget. That said, although it's a flat layout, the design will keep you on your toes ... Continue »

Lakewood really doesn't change much, I mean, it's a county course run by AG so they are trying to maximize their budget. That said, although it's a flat layout, the design will keep you on your toes due to the many trees and water hazards which can play havoc, as well as the patchy rough that gives you unfavorable lies when you miss the fairways. Green are not always in the best of shape but they're not terrible, it's poa what can you say. Several tee boxes to choose from but slow play is a standard ... anytime after 8am can easily be a 5 hour round. But one thing is for sure: green fees are very reasonable ($37 to walk on a weekend). Recommended for the price.

Played today at 1PM and finished at 6. While 5 hours may seem long to some, the flow was not that bad. And after all it was a Friday afternoon. Tee boxes level, clean and cut. Fairways did have some dry spots but no effect on play. Fairways in good shape and provided very good lies. Greens cut and rolled very nice, especially from above the cup (fast). Bunkers were hit and miss. Some good some bad. Customer service was top notch. Nice touch having the snack bar at the tunnel to the 3rd through the 9th and back to the 10th. After reading the reviews, I did not know what to expect but was very pleased with the course conditions and layout. I will definitely go back but on a different day and time.
