A few of the tee boxes were closed for maintenance (covered in manure), but it's good to see them putting more effort ($$$) into the course with their recently raised prices. The fairways didn't have many dry spots, the rough was hit or miss if you'd be in thick stuff or dirt. The greens were in the best shape I have seen them in a long while. They rolled true and had very few ball marks. It was just rained so they were very receptive and pretty slow. It's nice to see the course improving and will definitely be playing again soon.

Play here frequently out of it being the only course that is convenient. Really a shame that this is considered the "gem" of the LA municipal golf courses. San Diego has Torrey North and South, San Fran has Harding Park, and we get Rancho. The layout is absolutely phenomenal and could host championship golf with a lengthening of a few holes and the hiring of a qualified superintendent. Tee boxes and fairways are in mediocre shape.

Now let me get to my biggest gripe. The greens. It is a shame to classify this as the best golf course in the LA municipal rotation. The city doesn't even have a "superintendent" for rancho. I've been told they utilize under qualified lawn cutters out the LA City "Gardening Department". Greens are almost always spongy, filled with tufts of grass that knock your ball off line have excessive thatch and way too much organic material vs. sand under the greens. They rarely cut the greens tight and why I would guess they average a 6-7 on the stimp. What a joke. And they actually think the LPGA would consider coming here.

Pace of play is horrendous 80% of the time. The minuscule tee time spreading and rate increase they did has really had little effect. You have to "get lucky" when you time your play. A Saturday afternoon with an SC/UCLA home game or pay extra for the last tee times prior to a rate reduction which makes you feel like you are being strong armed. They have NO MARSHALL making assessments of what groups are causing pace of play issues and to issue warnings. LOL. Frequently have clowns that hit their drive 150 playing the back tees waiting for the green to clear from 250 and grinding over 2 foot putts like it is to win the masters.

The range is just ok. They put in grass when they did the remodel but it has not been open once since that I have seen. Why would you not corner off a few boxes and allow patrons to pay extra to hit off the grass if you're going to have it. Chipping green is a joke with bare spots all over the place and no practice bunker. There is one at the par 3 course but the "gardening A-team" can't keep that green healthy enough to stay open very frequently.

Bathrooms and locker rooms should have been remodeled years ago. Usually filthy and smell like rancid piss.

Do yourself a favor and make the drive to better courses in the valley or down the 10 freeway as you will usually make up for the drive in pace of play and quality of course you are playing. Rancho has become complacent with their built in monopoly on public golf in LA and doesn't seem concerned about making efforts to improve. Really shameful for a place that hosted the LA open in the golden age of golf.

Was a little nervous/bummed out after reading robcanter's Rancho Park review this morning, roughly 12 hours after booking my solo tee time last night. Luckily though our definitions of 'awful' are slightly different as I did not find the newly punched greens all that terrible (perhaps the fearful expectations helped there, but must admit #14 worst of the bunch), and yet the description of them being 'slow and bumpy' was 100% accurate. I adjusted well to them though and actually only had 28 putts all day, so that may also figure into my perception. They will hopefully be much better in the coming weeks though. The rest of the course was in pretty good shape overall. A few beat up tee boxes, but nothing crazy bad. The fairways (and course in general) still retain a verdant glow but there are a few areas where you can find a thin lie. The rough is a hodge podge as usual at RP. And the bunkers looked okay but I was lucky enough to avoid every one of them today. Shoutout to the starter who got me on early and the now more staggered tee times that are helping Rancho Park get back to a place you don't have to worry about a six-hour round. We had a slow group in front of us today (which at times did get a little frustrating) but still clocked in at 4:36 on Saturday with a 10:56 tee time (from the blue tees) - not too shabby. Kudos to the management and long may it last. Overall my guess though is that the greens will be getting better and, unless we get some good rain, the fairways will get a little browner. But for now I wouldn't hesitate to go enjoy RP, just know the greens at present are not Augusta quality. Shocker.

Had not played here in years but buddy of mine had a time time open. Rancho is a good traditional style layout, just gets too much play. Pace today was good, around 4:45. Fairways were pretty good as were sand traps and most tee boxes. Greens however were awful. They had been punched recently and have not recovered that well yet. They are very slow and bumpy. Every putt was a challenge. No frills place but you can have some fun with your friends here if it's not too crowded.

I played Rancho Park for the 1st time today. I was the first one off the tee at about 6:50am so pace of play was not an issue. Unfortunately I had to deal with quite a bit of fog and it was really tough to see much past 100 yards. This made things very challenging considering I haven't played here before! The fog burned off for the back 9 thankfully. Practice facilities: Nice large putting green out front. Driving range is also large with two levels but the balls are in really bad shape. They need to replace the balls big time! There's a small, beat up chipping green off to the right of the range. Tee boxes: Mostly in good shape. A couple were beat up but it didn't bother me that much. Fairways: Most landing areas were good and lush. There's quite a few dead spots on the fairways but these tend not to be where you will be hitting balls from. Rough: Rough is inconsistent. On some holes there really is no rough at all. On some holes you will find deep, nasty rough. Some holes have a lot of dead spots in the rough. Sand: Sand was heavy and wet. I only hit out of fairway bunkers so I didn't mind. Greenside bunkers would not be so much fun. Greens: Greens are in great shape here! They are rolling smooth and medium speed. Greens are pretty easy to read here. No big breaking putts for me today. Greens are quite soft and it was easy to leave big ball marks. Unfortunately, I saw quite a few unrepaired ball marks that I fixed. Overall, I think this is a very enjoyable course. There is a good mix of short & long par 4's. The par 3's are quite long and challenging. I find it a bit odd that 17 & 18 are both reachable par 5's. This must kill pace of play at the end of the round during busy times. They are nice holes though. The landscape at Rancho is pretty interesting as there is a lot of old trees lining the fairways and many holes have some elevation change. It's an easy course to walk though. For what I paid ($45 with pull cart) I think it's a good value. I would have a hard time paying much more than that. I assume weekends are more money. As it is really close to my house, I will probably end up here quite often.

This has always been one of my favorite golf courses to play in Southern California. Having grown up in the Midwest, I love the old style traditional courses, and Rancho is so much like what I grew up playing. I tend to play here very seldom now, because of the distance from where I now live, the typical horrible pace of play, and now what I consider to be over priced. But every once in a while, Rancho pulls me back.

The course is in about as nice condition as I have seen it, particularly the greens. Fairways were good, although brown in spots. Rough was just OK. While it was not all that bad to play. (Under 5 hours), it was the traffic both coming and going which probably will keep me away for a while. That said, love the course, but hate the effort to play it.

Played Rancho on Saturday 7/23. Our foursome teed off on time @ 8:08 I normally walk but with the heat wave we experienced last week I opted to ride for $59.50 The fact that I live less than 10 miles from here made this an extra special treat! I've played here many times and this was the best shape I've seen the course in, in quite a while. The course was in real good condition! A few brown areas on some fairways but for the most part green and lush. The greens were in excellent shape, rolling smooth at a medium pace, with very few pitch marks. I wasn't in any bunkers so no comment on them. The rough graduated from 1st cut to second cut to nasty. It used to be that a Saturday morning round here could turn in to almost 6 hours but on this day we were done in 4hrs 40 min. that's great for this course! Glad to see the city is making an effort to keep their courses playable and enjoyable. I look forward to my next round here.

Played at 7:00 am today. Very nice POP. The greens are in the best shape I've seen in a year. Felt like they were freshly cut. Rolled very true! Bunkers were moist and heavy sand, due to overwatering? The front of the 10th green was like a sponge, very, very soft because there is no drainage for that hole and all of the water ends up at the bottom right front so do not be short right on your approach! Fairways are in decent shape with a little bit of bare spots here and there. The rough is well.... Kikuyu so it can be tough to get your club through it. Depending on your lie, take an extra club! Driving range Opens at around 7:30am and the Back nine snack shack was not open at 9:30 so plan accordingly if you go out early! Very fun day! Go Play! ;)

I grew up playing this course and have really enjoyed some of the changes they're making. Sure, the rough will never be great and there will be dead and dry spots in some fairway, but it seems they're doing well with what they've got.

This course always plays tougher than it looks because of the hilly lies and elevation changes that can look more tame than they really are. Greens are in decent shape, bit of a bumpy ride but considering the amount of play they get I was pleasantly surprised.
