Rancho Park is really benefiting from all of the rain this year. Most of the course is in very good shape. Its rough spots are near the fences and near the cart paths. The fairways were the highlight today. Fantastic coverage and were very nice to hit from. The greens were next, followed by the tees, then the rough. I didn't find any sand so I won't comment on it. Overall a very pleasant day. Played the front 9 in 1:30 which was great and we were met by a three group wait at the par 3 12th for our first wait of the day.

Played Rancho Park on May 8th for an afternoon tee time of 2 pm. The wind was especially gusty but we played the blue tees anyway. Pace of play was somewhat slow at 5.5 hours, but that is normal for this course. The tee boxes were level and lush. Fairways were beautiful, although I wish I could say I hit them more often. Fairway bunkers were well-placed and tough to get out of, providing a good challenge for beginner/intermediate golfers. The greens ran fast and overall had fully recovered from getting punched about 3-4 weeks prior. Greenside bunkers were especially tricky due to a thin amount of sand on some of them. A broken water pipe due to construction leaked gallons of water on the cart path connecting Holes 4 and 5. Staff on-hand were working on it but not with vigor. The minor water leak did not impact play but requires a down-vote for visual appeal. Overall the course plays beautifully in the heart of Los Angeles and is worth the money and your time if you managed not to find any friends who belong to one of the many country clubs nearby. Highly recommend coming back as there is always something changing for the better on this course. Also, the snack shop on hole #12 is a sight for sore scorecards. Will definitely be back!

Played early on Saturday, May 6. Great pace of play at 3:45. The course was in decent shape. The fairways gave a decent playing surface. The rough was inconsistent with many bare lies. I was not in any sand so cannot comment on it. The tee boxes were level if somewhat chewed up. The greens were mostly recovered from aeration but were still a little shaggy and slower than usual. They also still had some bumps but generally rolled okay. Got rained on a little and the moisture made a course that plays long in general play longer today. Good time though and recommended.

Rainy Sunday afternoon at Rancho Park, which may or may not have contributed to another sub-five hour round on the weekend, but they've been very good my last few outings even when the weather was perfect. Some big tree damage going on on some of the holes on the back nine, including half the fairway cut off on the already difficult 11th hole, and the left side of 13. But luckily the inclement weather has also made the course pretty green and easy to play. There are still a few thin spots to contend with but overall it's in good shape. The rough is very playable right now (except maybe if you go too far left and on the side of the hill on hole 4), but you can find some thin, muddy areas if not in the fairways. I was only in the fairway bunker on 15 and it was nice sand, but by then the sun had come out so it was more dry than the others when the rain was coming down. Not fun at all. Tee boxes could use some TLC - very firm when placing tees, even with the softer ground. Greens overall were in pretty decent shape, ran medium speed but a few too many pitch marks for my liking, and of course on a stormy day, lots of debris to deal with, especially on some of the later holes when the wind really picked up. One gripe though, and it's not the first time - do better on that driving range fence/net that sprays countless range balls into 9 and 18. It's so annoying to have to inspect 30 balls before finding your own in that mess, especially on the final hole. Surely there's some way to shore that up better and avoid most of that chaos! But overall, good, solid shape at Rancho Park right now with the POP still very reasonable for the time being ...

Unfortunately picked a gorgeous day and pretty darn good conditions at Rancho Park to put up an absolute stinker on the card. No, today's poor performance had nothing to do with funky layouts, thin lies or bumpy greens - this was all on me today. And it was pathetic.

What was not pathetic was the condition of Rancho Park golf course. Drained/dried up very nicely after the rains with just a few muddy areas usually on the fringes of the fairways. The fairways themselves are pretty green and there were plenty of good lies to be found, but of course there are a few thin areas you can be unlucky to land in, but they're certainly the exception rather than the rule.

The greens were in very nice shape, but of course a few too many lazy golfers not willing to keep them that way and fix their ball marks. Overall though, they accepted shots very well (likely due to the rains), ran pretty fast surprisingly, and held their lines throughout. Took a good while to get a hold of the speeds ... oh who am I kidding? I never did, hence the poor round.

Sand in the bunkers was sufficient and functional - did its job. Some areas that could use improvement? Of course! The rough is very thick in areas and with the wetness it was very easy to get stuck with some nasty clumps coming off your clubs. And the tee boxes on many of the holes are not really mowed, but instead they just threw down the tee box markers wherever there was a flat area. To be fair though, they may be holding off until the course dries out again or in advance of the rains coming up in the next few days - I'm not sure.

POP was okay, but has been better my last few rounds at RP. Overall came in at just over five hours, but it was such a beautiful day it really wasn't so bad. Only my performance made it bad. Other than that though, it was in fine shape and always a fun layout, with the exception of the worst closing hole for a good course in LA County.

Another great round at Rancho. It was a little less soggy than I thought it would be given all the recent rain, which was a pleasant surprise. The course was as green as I've ever seen it and I've been playing here regularly for almost 20 years. There we a couple small brown spots on the fairways but they were small and limited. The fairways, tee boxes and greens were in great shape, the rough is what it always is....rough.

The best part of the round was there were no carts allowed because of the rain. It made the round quiet and peaceful without cart rumbling around. Easily the most enjoyable round at Rancho I've had in many years.

After finally getting an available date together, Kassper7 and I tee'd it up at Rancho Park on Sunday morning. We were paired up with two fine local gents who made it a really enjoyable foursome on a day that started out with ominous skies but turned out to be pretty ideal.

Conditions at Rancho Park are pretty good once again, but the best part (and the hardest to convince people about) is for the third straight time while playing on a weekend, it was a sub-5 hour round. Whatever it is they're doing seems to be working - keep up the great work.

The rains from the previous day certainly made the course a little mushy early, and from what I saw, the traps fairly heavy. But as the day warmed up (despite periods of gusty winds), the conditions improved and the last 5-6 holes were really a joy to play. There are some areas that were GUR and some standing water in a few places, but that should be gone by midweek.

Fairways were looking pretty darn good throughout, and only very infrequently would your lie in the middle be somewhat thin. Mostly good all day and plenty of nice landing areas for your good shots. The rough was tough - not thick with grass, but more with mulch and just dirt areas anywhere near the trees. Tee boxes were okay. Bunkers seemed better later in the day, but I can't really comment as I managed to avoid them all day.

The greens, while in nice shape from a speed and roll perspective, could certainly benefit from a clientele a bit more concerned about fixing their ball marks - especially on a day after heavy rains. There were some craters in there that would make the moon blush. How can you not fix that? But again, for the most part the greens were in nice shape, rolling true, although with the strong winds there was a good amount of debris on them to deal with throughout the day.

Can't understate though the joy of a Rancho Park that actually moves from hole to hole with absolutely minimal waiting. In total we finished our round on four hours and forty minutes. On a Sunday. At Rancho. That's pretty awesome. And of course it helps to have the great company of a fellow GK'er who appreciates the game with almost as much dorky zeal as I do. Let's do that again sometime soon!

Back out at Rancho again. They had just aerated six of the greens (1-4, 16, 17) but with very small holes which made putting ok but very slow. The fairways were a mixed bag, mostly pretty good lies even where brown, but there were a few dirt patches which luckily I was able to avoid. It seems like the course is putting all their water into the greens and surrounds which has made the greens and rough lush but has also made the greens a bit spongy and the rough right around the greens soggy. I had two balls completely embedded in the green and several really deep ball marks. It seemed every step you took left a pretty deep imprint on the green.

If they could just use some of that water in the fairways (tee boxes were in good shape) and dry up the greens and get them rolling a little faster, it would be 8/10, but would currently put it at 5.5/10.
