Played on the fourth of July with a tee time before 9 am. To our surprise, Rancho Park was really quiet with being a holiday today. The driving range was not that crowded. Normally on a weekend/holiday, you have a hard time finding a stall on the driving range. I really like what they did with the driving range. It's been awhile since we were last here. I like the artificial surface on the driving range. It's a lot better that dirt you see on a lot of driving range these days.

Pace of play was around 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 hours to play 18. Not bad. We hardly had to wait to hit even on the par 3s. Nice. The fairways had fairly good coverage. Some spots were a little bare here and there and sometimes I would run into grass clippings or mud. Some of the tee boxes were a little worn out but coverage was fairly good. The greens were in great condition. Balls were rolling about medium speed today. It was soft in spots. Can't comment about the bunkers as I didn't land in any today for a change.

I really like the layout of this course. It is not a flat course. You do have to go up or down some hills. It's always nice to visit the plaque near top of 18 tee box about Arnold Palmer's 12 on hole 18 during the LA Open. Makes you be careful hitting your second shot as to not land in the driving range or onto the street. You do need to watch where your ball lands on the 18th fairway as there are a lot of balls here from the driving range.

Seeing how nice it is, we will be back again. Stayed away because of earlier reviews about how bad the course conditions and POP. Great deal now with resident rates to all.

Spent Saturday afternoon at Rancho Park with three buddies and had a great day, bettering my best ever score there by 9 shots. It was a beautiful day and that of course is a scary thing at RP when anticipating the hordes wanting to play for the same reason and creating a 6-hour mess.

Lo and behold, it just never happened. To our shock and joy, everything moved pretty darn well throughout (yes, even only one group to wait on hole 12), and that starting at 11:30, playing the blues for $50.50 (with push cart). At the end of the round, we were shocked to see we clocked in at 4:45 - unheard of at RP on a Saturday!

Conditions were fairly typical. Some good coverage on the most used parts of the fairways, but definitely a good share of thin lies and forget about the areas right after the tee boxes, but you shouldn't be there anyway. The rough isn't too bad either - thick, but playable.

Sand traps were pretty okay, but need more folks raking from what I saw. By far the worst aspect of RP conditions are the tee boxes. Many chewed up and uneven - could definitely use some TLC. But balancing out the poor tee boxes were some great greens. Really fine shape - rolling very true, holding shots really well, and while there were a few ball marks here and there, mostly well taken care of right now.

It was very hot and there is no cart girl, but luckily you can reload on drinks at the turn and also at the snack shop at hole 12. All in all, a really enjoyable day.

Course in spectacular shape -green everywhere. Grass sod taken hold on all the usual dirt patches such walking off 6 green to 7 tee. Lush rough,smooth greens, good sand mix in bunkers. I played up here this morning with Eaglee and a couple other buddies. One of those buddies has a resident card and was able to book a great 7:12 tee time well in advance. $43 to walk. With beautiful weather this morning and the normal Rancho reputation, I was expecting it to be packed and a slow PoP. However, it was very quiet out there and we enjoyed a very relaxed 4:20 pace. We rarely pushed the group in front of us and nobody ever pushed from behind, so it was surprisingly ideal. We assumed the recent aeration kept some people away, as well as the Passover holiday, but by the time we left it was packed and looked like normal Rancho crowds again.

The greens were aerated last week and are still in rough shape. Sandy, bumpy and slow, but give them a few weeks and they should be good again. Beyond the greens, the rest of the course was in good shape. With so much play here, I can't imagine it being much nicer tee to green than it is right now. Tee boxes were generally good with just a few of the par-3s being chewed up. The fairways were generally great. Just a few weak spots here and there, but I almost always had great lies. The rough is a mixed bag. Most sections just off the fairways had good coverage with thick grass that was tough to recover from. Then the further away you stray from the fairways, the sketchier it gets. I was in one bunker and it was a bit firm and thin, but not terrible.

This was only my second time at this course, with the first being many years ago. I've really been wanting to come back and play it again, so it was nice to catch it on a good day for PoP and conditions (other than the aerated greens). I didn't remember many specifics about the course or how hilly it really is. It's not a bad walking course, but it is a pretty good workout. Really fun old school course with classic LA character, a few charming quirks and more than enough challenge and diversity to keep you entertained. I look forward to playing here again someday and hopefully avoiding the usual crowds that time, as well!

Rare Tues off so played 18 at RP with my brother-in-law. Paid $45 on GolfNow with cart. Played the blue tees with a 10:24 start time, but started about 10 mins later. I was very worried that conditions would be worse than ever but was pleasantly surprised. After the recent rains, the fairways actually looked pretty good - didn't really have a thin lie all day myself (but I saw others on some). The rough was cut not too tall but there was much debris to contend with all around the course, sadly including many of the greens. Tee boxes were in good condition, and sand looked okay, but I avoided it all day. The greens were in good shape with a few too many ball marks though. Speeds weren't particularly fast which, once adjusted for, led to some good lag putts. The few high shots I landed on the green were relatively well received. POP was slow, but unfortunately that was our fault. My brother-in-law was playing his first 18 again in over two years at 64 years old ... had some hardcore surgery that laid him out, so he moved pretty slowly, but I was just glad to see him back out there. The guys behind us? Probably not so much. But hey, it's Rancho - no one expects a 4 hr round, even on a Tues. So overall, a pleasant surprise - much better than anticipated, but could easily see it slip back into the abyss if more rainy days don't come soon.

Last year was the first time I played at Rancho. Over the years, I had heard it was a "must play" course. I was amazed there was no pro shop, and the parking lot was ridiculous. Played it again this year, and did not remember the course at all. Guess I must not have been too impressed last year. Anyway, I do think they should have an ambassador to shuttle the players from the parking lot to the clubhouse. Also, everywhere we've played, the golf carts are usually parked very close to the clubhouse. At Rancho, you have to walk a bit to get to the carts. If they are not going to shuttle players, then they should allow the carts in the parking lot. Fortunately, before I parked my car, I dropped my bag off at the front of the clubhouse where people were putting. But after golf, it was a long walk to my car with my bag. And, I was not walking back to the clubhouse for a drink!

Played on 11/21. It's such a shame that this once great track has deteriorated to the point I don't want to play it anymore. Many areas of the course (especially off the fairways) are simply garbage. Yes. the drought has caused some of this, but the other L.A. city courses seem to be fairing much better. One thing I do know is that Rancho does not used reclaimed water. I'm not sure why the city cannot find a way to do this. When I commented to someone on the staff about the conditions, the excuse was, "oh, this course gets a lot of play". Sorry, but a lot of play does not create horrible areas. The city really needs to bring in someone to fix these problems. They should take the extra money they charge for a "premium" course, and fix it up. But then, Rancho is a cash cow for the city. As long as people keep playing it, they really don't care. Very sad.

After our last game here 4 months ago it took a lot of convincingto myself and my golfing buddy that we should come back here again- you just feel the old time vibe and nostalgia of this place. what a shame This classic old course has turned into a cow pasture the greens are good the fairways fair, but every shot that missed was so hard to find. I lost 4 balls only one was justified Between our foursome we lost a lot of balls Every time our group thought we had found our ball it was some else's We found balls in bunkers, balls 2 yards off the fairways and even 2 balls submerged in mud on the par 3 8th where i was unable to find my buried ball.Lost 2 on the 17th. Maintenance of the rough areas and the collection of fallen debris and leaves made it very had to locate golf balls. FYI---- Play an orange ball on 9 and 18 as after the massive renovation of the driving range. It's still a joke that these fairways are littered with range balls. You feel the history of this course but time marches on and it's not enough with these sh-t ty conditions. Sorry to say see ya Rancho. Bye the way best Ham steak breakfast anywhere.

Other than that (and the subsequent ball marks, mud balls, and wet socks) the course was as Rancho should be- challenging, but fair. Greens were pretty good. Heads up- I do believe I saw a sign about upcoming aeration.
