Played a twilight round today at Big Rec. Booked a Golfzing time for $14 at 2 pm and managed to tee off a tad earlier. The fairways were in traditional Big Rec shape which means they were pretty lush (kikuya lush) with no real bare areas. The greens were real bumpy today although that could have been due to the late tee time. They were soft and receptive and were rolling a tad slower than normal which is still pretty quick. The course recently renovated many of their bunkers and I have to say that the new sand is great. The course was really busy today and for the first 4-5 holes, pace of play was pretty slow. We managed to make the turn in about 2.5 hours. Instead of playing hole 10, I went back to hole 3 and played the front 9 again. It turned out to be a great decision. I was able to get in 18 holes (though I played some holes twice). For those of you who haven't played Big Rec, I would definitely recommend it. Although pace of play is never great and the course conditions are never immaculate, the old tradition layout of Rec really makes playing here worth the experience. The layout of Rec really reminds me of that of Riviera. There are many long and challenging dogleg par 4's to complement the handful of short ones. Locals call holes 6, 7, and 8 the Amen Corner of Rec.

Used to play here several times a year, but over the past 10 years I rarely get here anymore. Always liked Rec, a fun place to play but the pace of play is what has kepy me away. Had an 11:00 tee time and actually got out 12 min early. Took only a little over 4 hours to play, which for this course is great.

Course is not in as nice condition as I can recall, but not too bad. Greens were a bit "iffy" but very receptive to well struck shots. Noticed a few changes in the bunkering which I suspect was done to speed up play. Enjoyed my round like a "walk in the park"

Can't understand why you take a course with a 111 slope and make it easier to speed up play. American Golf is a joke. Why not look at all the 5 somes on the course and tee times every 7 minutes for a start then actually have the marshals get people moving and playing from the proper tees. Have been playing this course for over 10 years and really enjoyed it until these changes. Even the greens, which used to be the best in the area, are subpar now.

Walked on after noon, right away put in group 2nd up. Finished 18 in 4 hours. Wonderful pace. Usually more like 5 hours. Lotta changes in size, location, shape of bunkers. On 1, fwy trap at about 200 yds from tee is gone. Now there's a trap at end of fwy, on left side. 4: green has been expanded, with a ring of about 3 feet of new green. In general, traps have been flattened. 18: large, deep trap on front, right side has been divided in two. 12: back tee box was closed so hit from about 110 to middle with trap front, right. Greens were fast, smooth, except for 4, which had holes punched with sand on back half. Some spots were trashed by carts rolling through soft, muddy grass, e.g., left and short of green on 14. 8: staked trees put in on left side, so will block 2nd shots once they grow. Don't know if these course modifications have speeded up pace of play, but I'll return soon to see if 4 hours on a busy muni can happen again.

Very disappointing conditions at Big Rec today in a tourney at 10AM, 11/16/13. 40 minutes behind at 10AM and a 5.5 hr round (3-hr front). Aside from the areas under construction, many areas were poorly drained/sloppy wet, in both areas between holes and in fairways. Some traps under obvious construction, as well as many areas roped off with new sod, etc., but no instruction from the course on how to play these areas.

Greens were generally OK, although American Golf continues to shrink these greens by tightening the edge cut and letting areas around the green go to fringe or rough. Many greens that previously extended out to the bordering traps now have 3-5 feet of fringe between the green and trap, so if you hit these greens you know you are accurate. But some of them are so small now that it's ludicrous. Many of the greens are very slopy, and in some areas where the greens are thin and very firm (like #9) the greens are almost unputtable from above the hole - the ball just rolls off the green.

Traps that were in play were generally in good shape. Tees were Ok but some were pretty torn up in the hitting areas as the course placed all 3 tees sets in the same place on damp ground. And whose idea were the 'silver' tees? - the course has blue, white, and silver, and you can't easily tell the latter two apart. What happened to 'red'?

Overall conditions very disappointing. Not recommended in its current state and with no controls on POP.

Played in a tourney yesterday 11/3 at 10:24. Started right on time. Course was crowded and finished in about 5 hours. They had just punched recently one half of the greens. Some of them seemed to have been done in the last week or two. The unsanded portions were not bad if inconsistent for this course. The tee boxes looked like they had been seeded in the last few weeks. They were okay. The fairways were nice. Not much rough to speak of unless you were unlucky. The only bunker I was in was the new one on the first hole at the end of the fairway. Nice sand.

Construction - New local rule makes the sod areas around the bunkers on (I believe) 1-4 mandatory ground under repair which has to be pulled out or two stroke penalty. The same applies to the bunker on four. It was a little confusing because they had not put in the sod yet on four. There is a dirt moat around the green where grass was removed. My recollection was that this green (and 5) were not aerated. They were using the upper green on 5 as construction was evident all around the lower green.

as of end of oct....the course is in some big maintenence....the greens were sanded on 1/2 of each green. the tee boxes were so thin it was like teeing off on hard pan...they have big tee areas so no excuse for tee boxes set up in "dirt". no discount on green fees with all the maintenence going on...a temporary green too...they need to let you know of this before you tee off or pay green fees...not enjoyable right now...make sure and check before you play or pay...

Layout not too inspiring except 18. Played here because everywhere else was slammed. Next time ... well, there won't be a next time.

Course is always enjoyable, but they just punched the greens. So, beware of playing in the next week or two.
