Played the Recreation OPark 18 hole course for the first time on Saturday 5/11/2013. Last minute plans. Got 2:45 pm tee time for 2 on-line at about 1:30 pm. We got there a few minutes late, but starter got us out a 3pm. Loved the course. The course wa in very good condition and very well maintained, fairways, greens, rough and tee boxes. Course has lots of ups and downs in the terrain which puts a premium on club choice. I look forward to playing at Recreation Park again, hopefully sooner than later.

The greens are medium-fast with down hillers being very fast. Approach shots that land on the green hardly make a ball mark. This shows how firm the greens are. The courses' main defense is the greens. It takes extra touch to score out here. I like to walk all of the Long Beach courses. However, Rec Park is my favorite due to several uphill walks. Burning more calories is always a good thing.

We decided to play today, before the next aeration next week. Glad we did. The greens they did 3/18-19 were in great shape. While you could see evidence of aeration the greens rolled smooth and with good speed. Fairways were mowed and provided good roll with excellent lies. Sand traps appeared good based on how I saw others playing out of them with no negative comments. Tee boxes level and clean with no issues. Staff was accommodating, punctual and running a tight ship. POP was 4:15 and that was walking. Suggest you take advantage of the great conditions and play before they aerate again next week.

Walked on yesterday (2/24/13) and was able to get out right away (1:30pm). I wanted to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather we have been experiencing lately. If you're not a Long Beach resident, I don't think it's worth the fee they charge. Golfnow.com every now and then would give great rates so take advantage of it when you can. Paid for the twilight rate which is worth it, but you're risking not finishing 18 holes like I did yesterday. It was a very slow day. I spoke to the marshall and he said that almost every group out on the course yesterday was a fivesome. Finished the front 9 in a little over 3 hours. I left just before 5:30pm after the 12th hole.

If there's one thing I can always count on with this course, it's the greens. Super fast and really firm. None of our shots yesterday were holding and it felt like I was putting on tiles. Again, not the greenskeepers fault, but lots and lots of unfixed divots. I had to fix about 4-5 per green.

I was in the bunker once and to me, they were a bit thin, but not bad. The fairways and rough were a bit dormant but it's expected with all the cold weather we've had. The tee boxes were a little beat up but it had more to do with the amount of play this course gets.

Aside from the pace of play, I always love to play this course. It's a grip-it-and-rip-it type of layout as there are no hazards. What you see is what you get.

Good day out at Big Rec. Walked on at 11:30am and paired up with three nice gentlemen. POP was 4 1/2 hours and we were all walkers. Course is very green and conditions were very good for the amount of play this course gets. The greens were firm and they have applied a light layer of sand and liquid fertilizer to all the greens. The sand had little effect on putts, just ask my playing partner Pablo that eagled 17 with a 12 foot putt.

I was pleased with the course conditions today, especially considering that it rained yesterday. The greens were great. Fast and true. The fairways were okay if soft from the rain. Winter conditions. The rough was cut pretty low in most places although it was lush and thick in others, such as left on 14. I was in one bunker and the sand had been groomed by the grounds crew. The tees were ragged with divots and bare spots. Generally flat with some exceptions. The pace of play was pretty good. We teed off a little late after a 7:07 tee time, then played in less than 4.5 hours. It was a good time on a well kept muni.

Played another enjoyable round here on a Sunday Morning Pace of play on a So Cal muni is never fast, but this was not too bad. I guess in part it was because 3 of us were walking, but this is a really nice course to walk.

There is no real water in play, but there are plenty of mature trees if you are off the fairway to punish your mi sh$t s. The course is not overly long, and there are some challenging holes, but accuracy is more important that length.

Being a muni, it gets a lot of traffic, but the course is in excellent shape. It makes me wonder why so many of the higher end courses restrict carts to the path only, when Rec Park has no real restrictions and the carts are not doing any major damage.

The only issues I saw were some fairly wet areas, but since it is November, it rained recently, and we played in the AM, I can forgive the soggy spots; and the tee boxes were in need of some real TLC.

Played 18 with Swing18 and his niece. Good Luck to Kristen this week as she and her HS head to the CIF playoffs!

Course conditions are stellar. Greens are fast; roll pretty true and definitely receptive. This is due in part to half the greens being punched. As a courtesy I noticed when they punched half the greens with the remaining part of the green unpunched making the green smaller. They use the red, white and blue flags to designate hole location for that unpunched area. Fairways lush. Bunkers well stocked. Rough is always thick here. Pace of play.... OK for a Sunday Afternoon.

Tried out the Voice Caddy on this course. Only problem was Hole 5 par 3 that has two hole locations. Other than that.... the Caddy worked it's magic. It's convenient and VERY precise. Compared it to my rangefinder and it was for the most part pretty spot on. Would I use the Voice Caddy on the course? Yes I would. For a feel player that knows their club distances I can honestly say this a very useful and easy tool to use. For a medium skilled player like myself.... it does help speed play (just hit a button and viola -- yardage) and it helps build confidence when you hit your approach shots.
