Recreation Park is in good shape . They roll their greens . The greens where smooth and fast . They have Bermuda grass on the farways and rough that will catch your club head and open the face , making for a bad shot . So you need to be a tiger and go after the ball . It's hard to get a tee time at Recreation Park if your not a Long Beach resident . This is their policy. SAD !

Played at 7AM on Saturday, 9/10/11, in the SCGA JC Cunningham Senior Championship. First group out on #1. Weird weather - we had sprinkles, thunder and lightning, and temps 30 degrees lower than 2 days ago! Fairways and greens were firm and fast, rough not punishing. SCGA officials kept play moving along, despite teeing off both 1 and 10, and we played in just over 4 hours. Course is in very good condition right now, but my game - not!

Teed off around 6:30 finished at 10:00 so you can tell the pace of play was excellent, even though we were a 3some behind a 5some. The greens were fantastic. Even though they had just been aerated (small holes, no sand) they were smooth, soft and very fast. I would guess at least a 9 on the Stimp. The fairways were good with just a few bare spots. The tees were pretty beat up. On 3 holes the normal tees were closed, and new sod was put down, so they are making an effort to rectify the situation. The staff was friendly; a marshal was even traveling around with ice water. Only saw the beverage cart twice but then we teed off very early so she probably didn’t even start her rounds until we were on the back 9. All in all a very good experience.

Several Tee boxes are still under repair. They have resodded but I believe they are allowing the grass to catch before they allow traffic. Holes 3 and 5 are still under repair with shortened holes.

Greens are great. They roll very smooth and true. Players do however have to fix their divots. I can recall fixing more than my fair share per hole. Not fun. Fairways are lush. Sand in bunkers are well stocked. Tee boxes -- the ones not under repair-- are flat and playable.

Pace of play was terrible. 5 1/2 hours to finish 18 holes. For us it was OK considering it was a holiday and we expected a lot of play. Group behind us (a twosome) were not so happy. Can't blame them for complaining but they were a twosome after all and we did keep pace with the group ahead. It was just a crowded golf course and like all things that are impacted with traffic play will slow down.

Considering the golf conditions I would recommend playing here. Conditions here are pretty good considering the amount of play. I did however notice a lot of heavily soaked areas so beware of mud. Overall pleased with conditions. It's one of Long Beach's better courses. Kudos to management for the work they are continuing to do to improve the golf conditions also.

Played here for the 1st time, and I will say I am a fan on Long Beach Muni Course. we went out as a 5some, following another 5some, and 2 of us were walking, but we still finished in 5 hours and only were backed up early in the round.

The course is not overly challenging, even from the back tees, which is just fine with me. I did not see any water on the course, and I usually get pulled toward it no matter where I think I am hitting. There are lots of mature trees, so there is still a chance to get into trouble, should you end up wide of your own fairway. We had a few tough pin placements, and there are enough bunkers if you really want to play in the sand.

The conditions were very good. The fairway did not have too many bare spots, and the rough was fairly lush throughout. Sand was heavy, especially earty. Overall, well worth the greens fee.

And that's what happened to yours truly yesterday on hole #12! No extra pants necessary. They even give you a trophy so long as you got people to witness your glorious 1 in 12,000 moment. Overall it is a pretty nice course. It was about $35 to walk yesterday. The fairways are nice and wide and the greens are fairly fast. They got some thick roughs so bring your 8 irons instead of trying to be a hero. This course definitely got some character to it.

Played on 7/3/11. Course was packed and had a tournament before us. Delayed about 30 min from the start and the group before us (not playing in the tournament) was really slow. But kind of figured it will be a long day. The course is in good shape. It seems like they put vertical slits on the greens recently, and could see the slits recovering. The greens were rolling true with good speed. The fairway and rough was in good condition. The sand was nice and fluffy. For myself, it was much cooler than being in the SFV, so the weather was great. Not too hot or not too cold. Outside of the pace of play (finished in 5h15m), it was a nice day of golf.

Don't know why I waited so long to play "BIG REC". It was great! Played on 5/30 Memorial Day Monday with an 8:00 tee time. Coures was in real good shape and even though it was crowded out there we finished in just under 5 hrs. It is not a very challenging course but the layout is nice and after about 4 holes the pace really picks up. I'll be back!
