These may be the fastest greens in the Southbay right now. The greens were very receptive and at the same time they were lightening fast. The tee boxes could use some work and they need to completely relocate the 14th tee box. The hole is completely unfair to fade hitters.

I'm always amazed how nice they can keep this course considering the amount of play. The course is preparing to be set up for the up coming tournament, so maybe that's why. In any ecent, "REC" is one on my favorite fun places to play. My only complaints are the pace the play and the ever increasing cost of the Long Beach courses.

Played Sunday. Pace of play was decent. Finished in 4.5 hours. Tee boxes in good shape. Fairways very green. Rough is thick and they are letting it grow for the Long Beach Golf Festival in a few weeks. Greens, a little bouncy with the rolls but pretty soft so aggressive approach shots are good to go. Greens very responsive to high iron shots to the green and you get some pretty good spin. Sand is good, a little heavy but very playable. Greens though in AM moisture rolled pretty fast. As day progressed and greens firmed up, they rolled even faster. Just as ball approached hole it would bounce and roll a little off-line. Play agressive and you will be rewarded. Play like a wimp and get your butt handed to you on the putting surface.

Started at 6:45am, played with my son (we walked) and two good friends(they rode), overcast but nice day, pace of play was good, finished in just over 4hrs. Greens were in great shape, fast, but true and soft enough to hold a shot into them. Overall Big Rec is in great shape and fun but just chanllenging enough to keep you on your toes! Well worth the greens fee for a muni course!

Got a twilght round in this weekend. Pace of play was a little slower than normal on the front nine, but it picked up by the turn. I've rarely seen some action by the course marshall but whatever happened sure did the trick. As for the course, the greens were nice and running fast. The rest of the course was in decent shape.

Fun place to play, although it is a long walk, but easily doable. 5 hours on a Saturday morning. Conditions are great from tee to green. No complaints here at all.

Played this course on Friday, Feb. 27 at 2:30pm. There was a 4some and 3some ahead of us but they were playing relatively fast - we took our time since my playing partner is a beginner. We ended up getting through 16 holes before darkness set it, most of that was attributed to a youth tourney that was going on in the front 9.

This was the first time I've played this course and the conditions were great. Tee boxes were flat and level without a lot of divots. Fairways were lush, no bare spots that we noticed and greens were pretty fast for an LA Muni. Folks weren't really repairing their ballmarks on the greens which was kind of annoying. The course layout is fun, with a several interesting holes. A lot of elevation changes but not too many uneven lies (where the ball is above or below your feet). The rough was pretty gnarly and penalizing, you're seriously scrambling on this course if you don't hit the fairway. For beginners this course is almost perfect except for the length - with 5 400plus yard Par FOURs. For a nineties shooter like me the wide open fairways and relatively easy greens made for a bunch of pars I wouldn't normally make. I can see why the slope is 111 - even though the course is long, if you can hit your driver 240 plus and are decent with a hybrid, you're going to score well. The key is staying in the fairway, especially the 460 yard Par 4 6th hole.

The staff was friendly but the restaurant was a little bit of a dive - still pleasant. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and will definitely play again.

Rec Park is simply in the best condition I have ever seen in the 40 years I've played there. maybe that's why it was so crowded. It took OVER SIX HOURS! That is not acceptable! With the wonderful setting, great condition, the slow play ruined what would have otherwise been a wonderful day of golf. Love the course - hate the slow play!
