After years of hearing nothing good about Dos Lagos, I decided to invest the 29 bucks to find out for myself. Any of you who played courses in Reno in the late 80s/early 90s will feel a little nostalgic when you pull up. A lot of the lot was dirt/rocks, the pro shop is a modular that sells a lot of balls found on the course, and the warm up areas were batting cages. I like the fancy clubhouses, but this one felt like home. We got out right at the tail end of a shotgun tournament (The Christian organization that put it on gave us free tacos and soda knowing that we weren't a part of the tournament. It was nice.), so I can't really judge the pace of play, but I was in for a surprise. The greens were what I suspected, incredibly slow and in poor shape. The fairway was shaggy but solid, though, the tee boxes were pretty level and healthy. There was no "rough" to speak of, it was cut about as short as the fairway, but was still distinguishable. I didn't find any bunkers, but the people I played with said they were good. The pin positions were almost cruel on many holes, which made the risk-reward setup of the entire course a lot more fun. I was shocked when I got to the first par 5. Out of bounds on the right, a steep slope to the wrong fairway, which funnels into water on the left, with a very narrow fairway. I don't know how I walked off the course with a shred of dignity left. The back nine was a real treat, I would definitely come back.

Played 4/14/13. First time at Dos Lagos. I'm a fan of the course layout. The designer did a great job utilizing the landscape. The fairways were excellent. I didn't have a bad lie in the fairway the entire round. The rough was also very manageable. The tee boxes were either awesome, or very bad. There were at least 4 tee boxes that I can distinctly remember being horribly uneven.
The greens at Dos Lagos look diseased. There are light green spots all over them. Also, they haven't completely healed yet from the aeration. Putts rolled somewhat true, but slow. The club appears to be dealing with the greens the best they can I'm sure, but I feel it necessary to let my fellow GKers know.

Fairways/greens are in ideal condition. After getting out to a delayed start, played consistently throughout. Plenty of elevation changes that set this course apart from others. No driving range, but do have 4 driving nets to loosen up in along with a small putting green adjacent to hole #1.

I always enjoy playing this course. Played on a Tuesday and finished in a little oer 4 hours. This course seems to consistently be in good shape over the past year. Definately get what you pay for, I think this course is by far the best value for conditions its in at least as a senior. Fairways are the best part which were lush, bunkers in decent condition and greens were running fine. Still hard to get past the bungalow for apro shop but I heard they were actually building a new one or at least adding on. I just hope they dont raise the rates :/ Solid course, will return soon.

Played Sunday 3/3/13 as threesome. Had 10:12 tee time and got out right on time. Course was busy but had a nice steady flow to it. Customer service was good all around.

Played Sunday 3/3/13 as threesome. Had 10:12 tee time and got out right on time. Course was busy but had a nice steady flow to it. Customer service was good all around.

Tees- Some lush, some thin, par 3's chewed up and a couple were like teeing off standing on top of a bowl. Not so great.
Fairways- Easily the best part of the course. Lush, green, and provided good lies all day. Fairways have grown in nicely and with the contrast between the dormant rough, it really was pleasing to the eye!
Bunkers- Second best part of the course, all of them had nice sand in them.
Rough- Dormant bermuda and basically super firm. If your ball went there you'd actually get more roll than in the fairways. Good for tee shots on the longer open holes. Terrible for greenside shots that require a soft touch.
Greens- Disappointing. They look nice from far but upon closer inspection they are full of ball marks, old and new and VERY bumpy. Unless you're in tap in range, every putt is an adventure. Also, there are several different types of grass growing in them. I will say the back 9 was better than the front but only marginally.
Misc- Weather was perfect for a day of golf and the usual wind from the north was unpredictable today. Swirled in every direction which made club selection a chore. Had a great deal through Group Golfer that made it worthwhile but I wouldn't pay anywhere near the weekend rack rates until they do something about the greens.

Had a round today at Dos lagos 2/4/13 teeing it up at 10:00. Course was in pretty good condition considering the time of year. Some fairways were dormant while others were very lush and green, I am guessing it was a 60/40 split with the lush side winning out. The first thing you notice here now is that they have placed the Hawk and Coyote decoys to help with the COOT problem and it has worked very well on all the water holes and fairways.
The bunkers here are quite good from fairway to green side, nice fluffy white sand that is 4-5 inches deep allowing you to play any exit shot you wish. There are several bunkers here both fairway and green side that are at least 6 feet in depth and several others that appear to be in the 3-4 foot range. The green complex's are above average in size with mild to severe breaking putts that may turn 2-3 ways depending on the flag position. Today must have been pin placement from hell day as many were down hill and breaking 3 ways to Sunday add in the wind today 15-20mph and it was hard to get the ball close.

Now I must comment on the bad. Lets start with the three hitting stalls that hard mats good enough to hit from, very poor, hard as cement and fairly difficult to find a place to set the ball from. The netting is torn, disconnected from its holding point and draped in a way that you can not possibly know what your ball is doing, and the balls, well you would be better off hitting rocks! They are sparse to find to begin with, and the ones you will find are cut, worn, flat, and might very well place your clubs in harms way, they are without a doubt the hardest substance on Earth!!
And now the worst, the Greens are some of the worst I have ever seen, rough, very thin looking and terribly hard. They need to be sanded or cushioned, 9 holes at a time so you can still get the rack rate of 24.00 with cart. I have played this course a few times and normally find the greens in good shape throughout the seasons, so the only thing I can guess is that the old course superintendents departure a month ago is playing a huge roll in what I was seeing.

The course is normally a fun track with a fair amount of challenge, and I would play it again, but first I would make the call to find out what condition the greens are in and if they are doing any repair work on them.

They all had sand in them and I mean at least 5-6 inches deep. Once the seasons change and summer comes around this course will be really nice.

The greens were slow and very bumpy, more ball marks that I could count, fungus on all the greens. Rough? I have no idea what the rough is made of, big clumps of grass is all. Fairways were 1/2 grass and 1/2 dirt. Maybe when summer comes I will try again. We are taking this course out of our rotation for the winter. Enjoy the holidays

Played Thanksgiving day. It was busier than I expected. I do like the course. Front and back 9s are very different, with the back resembling a link style layout. Setup was nice with some pretty tough greens. Conditions of the tee boxes And fairways were excellent, but the greens were bumpy and slow, I mean muni course slow. Unfortunate, bad greens really bother me and I didn't enjoy the round as much as I should have. The greens were kinda punched, but the holes were tiny and not round like a typical aeration. Not sure what it was. I would still recommend this course to anyone. Hopefully the greens recover soon.
