Played here 5/29 for my GK Cup match with fellow member Rudyclub. I love the layout of this course (all three 9 hole options are great) and we played the Canyon/Ranch combo which is in my opinion, the most difficult grouping. I was glad to see that everything was green and pace was excellent for a holiday weekend. On to the review:

Tee boxes: Good condition overall. Some had a little more use than others and plenty of them were a bit lacking in level ground, but all offered reasonable coverage to drive your tee into.

Fairways: Good condition throughout and green in color. Never had a bad lie all day and the roll I thought was fair. Cut nicely and visually pleasing.

Rough: As with many canyon course, the natural terrain is far more penal than the "rough" on the course, however the rough that did exist was not terribly harsh. Areas with more than 2" of grass did affect shots a bit but nothing terrible.

Bunkers: Mixed bag throughout. Some bunkers had brown dirt-style sand that was difficult to shape shots in, others had whiter beach-style sand that was far easier to work with.

Greens: Good condition overall with only two greens that I remember having areas of burn/damage, though it did not affect putts. Rolled true and medium-slow. Breaks and undulation on some of these greens was insane (especially Canyon #4).

ETC: Carts had no GPS but were upgraded. Staff was friendly. Cart girl came around roughly 5 times in the round. Water jugs filled with cold water. Natural landscape lends itself to lots of wildlife, and that includes LOTS of bees everywhere. Layout is spectacular and a wide variety of holes. POP was 4.5 hours, which for Memorial Day was excellent. For a good price, definitely worth a visit.

Since I had not played here since 1992, I had almost zero recollection of the course! I did not remember it as being all that great, but I must admit I found the course to be better than I expected. Played the Ranch/Vineyard from the blue tees. Enjoyed the course, but as a "walker" it would be a tough hike to try to huff it around this course.

Greens rolled well, not fast, but enough speed to make you think. Did not find the greens all that tough. Fairways were nice as was the rough. Really liked the sand in the greenside bunkers, (when they were raked)

Staff was great, except that we had many holes with no pin. (The mower would finish cutting, then not replace the flag sticks) I called the pro shop and was told they were going to spray. I advised them that was fine, but I was tried to hitting to greens with no flag sticks, and I would be happy to take the pins out and leave them next to the greens if needed, but it was not fair to have no pins. The last 7 holes, that was rectified.

Nice course - pricey and a bit far from home, but it was fun and look forward to returning sooner than another 25 years

First time ever playing Steele Canyon. Took advantage of my $20 birthday round this afternoon after the morning rain tapered off. Played Vineyard/Canyon and loved both layouts. Course was in great condition considering the morning rains. Greens were very receptive to approach shots and really in almost perfect condition. Putted smooth and fast. Fairways had good coverage and were cut thin. Rough was fairly short dormant bermuda so no real penalty for missing fairways. Very good scoring conditions. I usually shoot low 80s when I travel, but managed to post 37/37 on the two nines. Nice birthday gift from the golf gods! Anyhow, I really loved this place and can't wait to return.

Went out today/Tuesday at 10:09am finishing up at 1:09pm playing the Ranch/Vineyard Combo with The Canyon Course being closed. Played as a single starting on the Ranch Course and saw no one in front or back til I reached #9., a twosome, ran into two foursomes on #2 of the Vineyard #11 Overall, was kindly let thru both foursomes. Two holes later I was on my speedy merry way. The course is in great condition. Tee boxes are nice and flat, soft, easy for tee placement. The fairways are nice and green, cut short for perfect lies. The fairway rough is also cut nice and short so missing the fairway is no problem. Rough nearer the green is a little longer posing no real problems greenside. The bunkers were nice and soft with fluffy sand. Got out of the few I was in easily enough. The greens are the best I have seen in town. Running 10.5 on the Stimp meter which I like. Fast and True. Pitch shots from 40 yards out were hitting nice rolling out about 18 feet with a Mojo. Staff was courteous, water is located throughout the course and I saw the Beverage Cart 3 times during the round. Weather was perfect, had a great time, can't wait to get back.

Played the ranch / vineyard combo this morning in about 3.5 hours. Course is in good to very good shape. These two nines have already had their maintenance and were looking good. Tee boxes were very nice and lush. Fairways were ok but never had a bad lie when I made the fairway. The rough near the fairway was growing out and the ball sat up nicely. Greens were in great shape. Nice and lush with a medium to fast pace. Not allot of ball marks either. Sand was good never had a problem hitting from them. Got the deal from Costco so only payed $40 for the course which is a great deal.

I continued my birthday golf here yesterday, 10-4-16, joined by 1PLUS1. (thank you, Jeff.) The fee was $20 for the cart.

I continued my birthday golf here yesterday, 10-4-16, joined by 1PLUS1. (thank you, Jeff.) The fee was $20 for the cart.

The course has 3 nines. The Ranch course was closed for maintenance so we started on the Canyon course which is full of elevation changes and forced carries. The wind was really blowing which made it even more challenging. The fairways were in decent shape, the greens were firm, fairly fast, and had quite a few marks and scars. I liked the course a lot but was hitting so poorly that I was happy just to get a few good shots here and there. The biggest problem was the pace. We waited on every hole, yet we were being pushed aggressively by the group behind. There was no marshal on the course to help out.

We next played the Vineyard nine. It’s very different than the Canyon, as it’s wider, flatter and runs along some houses. We were able to put some space between us and the group behind us so it was much more relaxed and I finally had a couple of good holes. The fairways here were good, but the tee boxes were in serious need of mowing and the bunkers had small stones. The greens were so soft they were just a mass of footprints and ball marks.

Overall, I liked it and would like to play it again when conditions are better, but only if I was already in the area.

Played 9/8 at 11:30 as a threesome. Played Canyon/Ranch, my preferred combo. Course was booked through 12:00, which is rare for a weekday. Plenty of waiting as a threesome, but 4.5 hour round. Tees were level and lush bermuda, with the par 3s showing more than average divots. Fairways were bermuda, cut short, not tight, with good coverage and some areas of only slightly less than green. Rough was well defined but not too penal. They have taken out extensive areas of rough and replaced it with water-saving areas and IMO improved the course. Fairway bunkers and greenside bunkers were consistent, with fine white sand. Greens looked and putted great, medium fast with noticeable grain influence. Collars and aprons were well-cared for with good coverage. This course just seems to get overlooked by many. It has great elevation changes on the Canyon/Ranch combo and really fun hole variation. It isn't particularly long and has ample room for drives, but there are plenty of visual demons to add strokes to your score. The rates are a little higher than average, no where near a Torrey scalping for out of towners, but you'll get what you pay for. Nice but limited selection of draft beer at a reasonable rate in a beautiful clubhouse with a pleasant bartendress, even better when someone else is buying, made it an extremely enjoyable day

Played 5/30 with GK members jpeairs85 and Rat-Patrol. It's true that good company makes a less than desired score seem less hurtful and today was no different. Love the fact that Jim was able to join and it was a perfect day for golf. Played the Vineyard (old Meadow)/Canyon combo, and even though I was sad to miss the Ranch 9, it was nothing short of enjoyable today. On to the review:

Tee-boxes: A mixed bag of some level and perfect boxes and others were chewed up and not level. Jim and Jon said it best as you never really think about tee-boxes...unless they are terrible, thankfully only one tee box comes to mind that was awful but I am sure that was because the white and blue tees were often paired into the same space, doubling the abuse they took that day.

Fairways: Overall good. Lots of green everywhere, especially in the Canyon 9. I only had one bad lie and that was due to a divot but I really felt the fairways offered great lies throughout and the bare spots were kept to a minimum.

Rough: Depends on which hole you were playing but ranged from relatively easy to hit out of to downright nasty. As anyone who has played this course will tell you, there is enough natural rough/waste areas to keep you honest and the real penal aspect to the course is certainly the natural canyon terrain surrounding each hole.

Bunkers: Was only in three today and all were greenside bunkers, but they had enough sand to make sure the shot could be good. I did see more than a few where the sand was compact and others where it was more dirt than fluff but at least the ones I played had good sand in them. Rakes were ample as well.

Greens: Great condition (except for the ball marks on a few but that's on the golfer not the course). The roll on some was so quick yet for others it was much slower. It took me some time to get it down and the breaks on some of those greens are just unfair (Canyon 4 comes to mind as the absolute worst green on the property). Challenging!

ETC: Staff was very friendly and helpful (love seeing that everyone on staff had the same uniform therefore making it simple to find someone). Food/drink cart only came around once and it was pretty warm out there. Carts were ready and nice. Range and practice areas are nice as well. Pace was excellent for Memorial Day when I was expecting a 5 hour round. Great course for a $44 online rate.
