Played on a Wednesday morning. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) the course was pretty empty. This has always been my favorite course in the So Cal because of its affordability, interesting and challenging holes, usually very good conditions and accessibility. I miss the ‘old course’ layout, which is modified by the addition of 4 new holes and some re-routing. The new holes are still growing in as their fairways are thin. Their greens are in good shape, however, and I think they did a decent job integrating the four new holes with the old layout.

The conditions on the old holes was pretty good. The greens were in very good shape and rolling medium fast to fast. The sand was a bit inconsistent. I found 1 or 2 traps to be a tad thin, a couple of others nice and fluffy. The fairways were generally lush—they could use some mowing. Your drive will probably not roll. The tee boxes were in very good condition. No real rough to speak of. There are some areas of work being done on the course, but nothing that will detract from normal play.

The service in the pro shop was friendly and efficient. $31 to walk prime weekday, which makes this a bargain for me. Don’t mind the drive at all and the atmosphere once I’m there with a great practice range and grass seemingly everywhere added to a fair and excellent test of golf makes this well worth the trip.

Played RR Vineyard on 3/15/10. This course always has memories for me growing up playing with buddies. I always remember the fierce wind here. The wind was crazy at our back yesterday on the first hole...so much that I had driver 6 iron in(lol).......the course defends itself well with some strategic bunkers in the fairway and around the greens. The greens were beautiful and probably running around a 9 or so on the stimp. They had a thin layer of topdressing that really did not effect putts. They were pure and with the proper amount of spin and trajectory held iron shots very nice. The fairways were in good shape but I liked the Lakes fairways a tad more. The rough was dormant brown and was thin. The tee boxes were level and the sand was to firm for my taste but was raked and in good shape. The pace of play was great. I left several clubs on the front nine and the marshall was great in trying to retrieve them. The marshalls do a great job with pace of play at RR which is appreciated. I really love the new 4 holes on top of the hill at the Vineyard course. #5 and #6 provide scoring opportunities. I love the Island Hole but I am not sure that I like that hole as #18(just my personal opinion). I would recommend either RR course at this time....but prefer the Lakes condition and layout every time.

Played the Vineyard 18 at River Ridge Golf Club today. Teed off at 2:00 and could not have got better weather! There was a strong warm SOUTH wind (that’s not typical) which aided the first few holes making them down wind. Then on the 5th hole the NORTHWEST wind (the prevailing wind) came up, allowing once again for down wind play. LOL. Anyway, I could not take advantage of the pleasant conditions on the scorecard as the difficult putting surfaces had their way with me. The greens on the course are fantastic right now (smooth, holding shots, fast) and the rest of the course is mostly still in winter conditions with generally thin to lush fairways and dormant rough. The sand traps had a coarse texture sand and a bit firm in places but were well raked and maintained. The tee boxes we all in good shape. Overall, after playing the other River Ridge 18, The Lakes, I’d say the Lakes is in better condition…see my Lakes review.

The last time I played River Ridge Vineyard, which at the time was just River Ridge and had 4 different holes was way back in August 2004. This was my first time seeing the new holes and I must say they are fantastic. The course is certainly improved from its original layout. That’s a big statement from me because I used to be a member of the men’s at River Ridge 12 years ago driving up from Calabasas to play it every week. Something I very much enjoyed is the 18th hole is now the famous “Island” par 3. Considering 90% of the time in the afternoon the prevailing wind is strong from the Northwest, this almost 200 yard par 3 plays dead into the wind. Today I needed my 235 yard club just get there...after 6 years, I still had nerves staring down that shot and what a thrill it was to hit the green to cap off my round.

I recommend playing this course now before they aerate the greens at the end of the month, and once the greens recover, but if I had my choice, having played both courses in the last 8 days, I’d pick…The Lakes.

Played River Ridge Vinyard course last Saturday 2/27 at 8:30am. Course was in very good condition, greens are smooth and moderately quick. The rain has led to the greens holding approach shots better than they ordinarily do. Little to no rough on the course, or the rough is very low in most places. Tends to be very little wind in the mornings, but finish before 2pm before it starts to kick up and really affect distance. Overall they course is in great shape, the rain did not make it sloppy at all, lush and green.

Played on 1/3/10 with a tee time around 12:30 pm (last tee time before twilight). It took us about 4 1/2 hours to play all 18. It was our first time playing here. I like the layout. On holes #4 and #5 today, we were able to see the ocean and the channel islands. Liked their policy of getting everyone to complete all 18 in under 4 1/2 hours. Cool.

Course is in decent shape considering how dry it was. Most of the fairways were either bare in spots or brown in spots. Some fairways were a lot more brown than green. Greens were in great shape. Saw some greens were recovering from recent aeration. Balls didn't bounce around too much. Bunkers were in good condition. Some of the tee boxes were all chewed up. I was impressed how nice the tee boxes were on holes #14 - #18. The tee boxes had decent grass and were a lot larger than normal. It is a challenging course especially on the back nine. Liked their island green on #18 (it was a lot larger than the island green at Vista Valencia). This course is worth their green fee especially being able to finish a round in about 4 1/2 hours.

Greens are receptive and fairly smooth. Bunkers in fair condition. Cart girl came by frequently (probably because there were not many golfers out on the course!). Pro shop staff were friendly and helpful.

Good customer service keeping pace of play. There were at least two marshalls watching the Vineyard course the day after Thanksgiving. Fairways going dormant. Greens were still showing signs of aerification, but rolled fine. Some tee boxes were unlevel in spots, but o.k. Rough was very short and dormant. Sand was in fine shape.
