Finished off the weekend with a nice round at Knollwood on Sunday. Our foursome snagged a 9:15am tee time online with a $49 greens fee. Not bad for this very fun layout, albeit not in its best shape and once again plagued by POP issues. First mention though goes to the antiquated golf carts at KCC that are 'no frills' personified. The steering mechanism barely worked in the cart we were assigned. It would be a real treat for this course to update those mules, but I doubt it will happen. They also continually have POP problems here because tee times are not staggered enough. We essentially waited on every hole on Sunday, however I've actually seen it far worse, being 2-3 groups deep all day. In the end we finished in just over five hours. Thankfully I was playing with a very fun group and the weather cooperated for most of the day, with a few cold spells when the sun dipped behind the clouds and the wind picked up. Overall, I've also seen the course in far better shape. When it is in good shape, it's (for me) one of the more fun tracks to play in SoCal, but when it's beat up like yesterday, it makes it a bit more of a slog. Fairways are pretty thin in a lot of areas and there were a few GUR stakes marked where the rain water had collected, but some of the more wide open holes have nice coverage. Tee boxes were okay, except for the 18th hole which was severely sloped and in need of some work. Bunkers seemed okay but I avoided them all day. As far as the rough, plenty of dirt and mulch areas to avoid if you can. The rest of it is sparse and not very difficult. Greens were rolling at varied speeds all day and tough to work out. Some of the greens here are a bit unfairly sloped (I'm looking at you hole 3) depending on where they set out the pin that day. Some spotty coverage on a lot of the greens but they mostly rolled pretty true and held shots pretty well. Aesthetics not great, but played okay. Fix your ball marks, people. Still, it was a good day out there despite the less-than-optimal conditions and the poor transportation options. Also never saw cart service once on a busy Sunday afternoon, so that's bewildering. I would love for KCC to pick up its game and be the shining star it could be with just a little more attention to detail. But it's crowded enough as is so not holding my breath.

Having read parmegt's recent review, I was not expecting much from Knollwood, and was still left disappointed. I think the "bones" of this golf course are wonderful, great design, visually appealing, enough of a challenge to keep your interest without beating you up. That said, my experience today was as follows:

Arrived early for my 6am tee time, and when Arnie finally opened the shop, did not even have the courtesy to respond to my hello. He took forever to "fiddle" around with the cash drawer and other things, mean while people are waiting. I was clearly the first person in line, but he totally ignored me and called a person from back in the line to check in first. (WTF) Then he did not want to even take my $$, and by now it is past my tee time ??. He was a very unpleasant individual who should not be dealing with the public.

As permegt described, the course is not in good condition, in fact probably the worst I have ever seen it. Tee boxes not level, shaggy, and not maintained. Fairways had a lot a bare areas and were just not well maintained. The rough was a disaster, mostly dirt mixed with scraggly weeds. Greenside bunkers had sand, but it was unraked and compacted.

Despite all the negatives, love the course, enjoyed perfect weather and our three some walked in a very acceptable 3 hours 10 minutes, with no waiting. (Second off following a two some) I am hoping that they bring this wonderful course back to the condition I remember it being in, and that they employee somebody in the pro shop who creates a more welcoming atmosphere for the patrons spending their $$ to play here.

Terrible!! I've ripped American Golf many times & here we are again. Start time 8*40ish, started just 10 minutes late. My buddy & I were put together with 3 others as a 5some. We waited on every hole, pretty much every shot. 3 hour front nine (shoulda bailed then,) 2hr 40 min back 9. No Marshall, no beverage cart. At the turn I asked why no drink cart & was told "only in the summer." It was 91 degrees!! The Course: Overall very dry. It's been hot & windy, but c'mon!. Tee boxes bad. Not level, torn up. Fairways some good areas, but many bad including some dirt & muddy areas, maybe leaking pipes? The rough is as bad as a course gets. Dead weeds, leaves, large branches, crap! Greens normally are good & fast, had some sanded areas, maybe a virus & were slow. Bunkers were decent, some nice sand over hard bottom. I played in a twilight summer league & the course was in good shape. The 5some thing ruins the course. If I ever play here again it will be in the first hour tee off. Don't waste your time!

I have always wondered why number 10 was cart path only? makes no sense to me and kind of disappointing because it makes you definitely not want to go anywhere left which is not good anyway but then focuses on trying to go straight or right or hitting a fade. other than that course was in pretty decent shape and pace of play was pretty good.. Call and ask about areation in the next week..

Since I was already a long way from home and had to drive right past Knollwood, I thought that for $16.50 I'd stop by and try to get out. Even if I did not finish, well worth the price and since I rarely get up this way, why not? I guess because of the heat. (Almost 100 degrees) not all that busy.

Course was in much better condition that I expected. Greens being the best part, but even the fairways, rough, tee boxes were in nice shape. Greens really held the shots well !

I have to admit that I did not play too well, perhaps walking 36 at my age, combined with the heat, that was to be expected. However despite my lack of performance, enjoyed what turned out to be a very long grueling day, on a few courses I seldom have the opportunity to play. Recommend Knollwood right now.

Played today; $55 riding at 6:20 a.m. My brother and I were placed with a threesome, so our group of five went out on time and following closely behind the three or four groups ahead of us. As the day went on it opened up, but we were the slower of the groups and let a twosome pass us at the turn. We finished in 4 hours and 50 minutes due to lack of talent and some bad hops here and there.

As in the previous review from mdames, the course is in great shape right now. Good grass coverage and nice greens everywhere. Outside the rough it gets sketchy with pine needles, dirt, weeds, and mulch. Keep it in the middle and it's easier.

Greens rolled medium fast without a lot of bumpiness. They were soft and any high shot would make a mark and stick like a dart. I fixed a few ball marks besides my own, but it was not too terrible.

Fairways and rough were cut nicely. The rough was barely longer than the fairways, maybe an inch and a half most places.

Tees (we played the whites) were fairly level and not too beat up. Maybe a little on the par threes.

Overall maintenance looked good. Good sand in the bunkers. Several trees have been trimmed or removed (left side of 10 fairway is more wide open to the green).

The beverage cart came around a couple of times while we were on the back nine. We also stayed after and had lunch. Burger, fries, fish and chips for about $20. Not very good, but edible. Nice, friendly folks in the pro shop, cart barn, and snack shop/bar.

I might come back if I can get an early time. Right now, conditions are very good.

Played Knollwood as a walking twosome on Monday morning (5/20) at 7:30am. After a foursome let us play through on hole 4, we breezed through our round in just over 3 hours; great pace of play! Overall, the course is in excellent condition. The fairways are nice and green. They are lush, with excellent lies everywhere. This is the best condition I've seen at Knollwood in quite some time. For the most part, the rough adjacent to the fairways is about 1 - 3 inches deep, lush and in great shape. However, there are some areas where the grounds crew hadn't cut. If you landed there ( I did twice!), your ball was 4 - 5 inches deep, and a bear to hit out of. Fortunately, there weren't too many spots like this after the first few holes. The grass around the greens is cut short and in good shape, with no bare spots that I can recall. The greens were a mixed bag. They all ran medium-fast and were quite soft, holding approach shots nicely. However, on several holes throughout the course, they were a little bumpy. I had a couple of putts knocked off line due to this. But mostly, the greens were fine. The course is in very nice shape right now. This is a good time to play a nice track.

Great little Sunday round at Knollwood today with an online teeoff.com deal for $41 with cart and food. Went with a buddy and played from the blue tees with an 11am tee time. First good sign for the day was a relatively empty parking lot, which was shocking for a Sunday, but when I got to the pro shop and saw there were no carts available, I got nervous. But when it was time to tee off, one cart was there for us and away we went. POP is usually dreadful at KCC on a Sunday afternoon, and while we did in fact wait on a good number of holes for the group in front of us to get moving, we actually finished in just under five hours, which is fantastic for this place. In terms of conditions, probably some of the best I've seen at Knollwood in a long time. The rains have done wondrous things for the fairways here, and while they're not quite pristine country club green, they're pretty darn close and you're not going to have much trouble finding good lies. The immediate rough near the fairways is cut to a nice length, but anything pushing the boundary areas is likely to find you in either dirt, mulch or an army of very aggressive foxtails that will attack your shoes and socks like Arya going after the Night King. Sand in the bunkers is very nice as usual here, and the tee boxes were mostly in good shape. The greens are fully recovered from any aeration and are running fantastically smooth at the moment. Speeds are medium fast and there are a few very steep greens that will be an adventure from just about any spot. They seemed to hold shots pretty well too, but barely any of those were mine because I'm still terrible currently. So it's a big yes on recommending Knollwood right now, especially if you can find a sweet spot in the rotation that doesn't get you stuck playing a six-hour round. Because as for the course itself, you won't be disappointed. It's still one of the best muni layouts around.

If I’m gonna play Knollwood I’m gonna be one of the first groups out, if not it’s not worth it. Tee boxes and fairways were average, but the greens were worth the greens fee, they were fast, firm, but held shots too. I love the layout at Knollwood, it’s not overly difficult, but good to test your game. Although we almost got hypothermia it was worth the early start. I don’t mind the cold, it’s the wind that sucks. I will definitely be back for an early round soon.
