I don't play this course on a regular basis, but I found during this time of the year, the fairways are pretty thin. Normally this is tolerable for ordinary courses (as many are like this during late winter early spring in Los Angeles), but for this particular course, it creates very difficult playing conditions. This course has many holes that have severe slopes towards the ocean. With fairways this thin, the ball in many case will end up rolling off the fairway even if you hit an otherwise fantastic shot. An example is the first hole. A straight or even a slightly drawing shot will not put your tee shot in the fairway. You have to aim for about 10-15 yards out of bounds to the left to have a chance. Another example is the 18th hole. If your normal tee shot is ~230-240 yards, your tee shot will either be in the bunker on the right or rolling off to the left. You have to be a big hitter to carry the 150 marker to avoid the part that has the weird bump which pushes your tee shot to the left. The 10th hole is another example. You need to aim for the car path or a little left of it.
In any case, during other times when I played this course, it's not as punishing as this time of the year. Summer is very enjoyable, e.g.

Course is showing some slight improvement since my last post, but not much. Dry and firm, winter conditions in fairways and rough (if you want to call it that). Bunkers are a crap shoot but manageable. Tee boxes are in dire need of repair. Greens are fantastic, as good as I've seen them. Play early or play slow, but the beer is cold ... 'nuff said.

I got a rare Saturday mid-morning tee time at this busy course through American Golf website - so the lesson is that it is possible to get a desirable tee time at this highly demanded course if you are persistent. Proshop personnel was friendly and so was the marshall who was doubling as a starter at the 1st tee. He was helpful in keeping groups in order and giving advice on the yardage. Given it is a busy course with a lot of playing, the tees were generally in good order, fairways were in decent shape with no overly dry area. I appreciated courses effort to keep the ball from rolling down the gutter located in the middle of the first fairways and few others by having ball stoppers strategically placed along the gutter - nothing like searching for a ball that has rolled down the gutter all the way across the fairway. Greens were on the med fast side even with some bumps, which is pretty good with all the playing this course gets. Griffith Park should learn from this - it's OK to roll and mow the green to give some challenge sometimes. Everyone knows that for the money this LA County course charges which was $35 to walk, and this is a very nice walking course, the course is a well laid out and well kept course, and the view of the ocean and the Catalina Island is not bad either. Only problem is the pace of play, but with most groups comprised of 5 some as American Golf is famous for, you get what you get. So if you have the time, I would definitely recommend this course.

Sorry, I can't agree with previous post: been playing here regularly for over a decade and conditions are as bad as I've ever seen them, rivaling pre-irrigation upgrade a few years ago. Understanding it's winter conditions, but there is no definition from fairway to rough, it's all dry and hard. Bunkers are like a park sandbox, tee boxes ripped up and uneven ... downgraded to 'dogtrack'. But, heh, the greens are great! Played in 4.5 hrs. Sunday morning which is like a minor miracle. You're taking a chance coming here, unless you just want to putt and have a great view. We need rain cuz they don't seem to want to turn on the sprinklers.

Played here two days in a row, teeing off at 6:30 and 6:45 am. This course played a lot faster last year. Played in 4 1/2 hours on New Years Eve and in 5:15 on New Years Day (and it seemed a lot longer). The greens are in great shape, firm, smooth and fairly fast. The rough and fairways are thin but few bare spots in the latter. The tee boxes are more undulating than the greens. The sand was inconsistent, thin one time and thick the next. The saving grace - it was an absolutely gloriously beautiful day both days, with the 2012 round played in 80 degree weather with Catalina poking out of the fog in the distance.

Played this morning..perhaps everyone is out shopping..we got on in about 30 minutes..arrived at 06:00..tee'd off at 06:30 Winter conditions..tee box is spotty..fairways are so-so..thin they aerated a few weeks ago..very bumpy still..give yourself a stroke on the bumpy greens..but the views are always divine and majestic.
