I can see how some of the recent reviews are mixed. They've closed the back 9 of the Robinson Ranch Mountain Course and the facility has 3 9-holes they're now calling Valley, Desert (back 9 of the original Valley), and Mountain. The biggest problem I had was with the tee time and rotation management of groups. I understand that they're in new territory, and I hope they get better. But as of this past Saturday, it was a big mess. Here was our experience with their tee time management: - Called for a tee time and were told we're playing Valley and Mountain - Got to the course and the proshop told us we're going to play the Desert and check with them after we're done to find out where we're playing for our back 9. - Checked in with the Starter and was told to start at Mountain and play Valley as the 2nd 9. - Finished mountain and were told we couldn't play Valley because there was a big tournament going out at that 9. - Another tournament was going out at the Desert so we couldn't play there either, so we ended up re-playing Mountain to wait for either Vally or Desert to open up. It was either that, or site around for 3 hours. - Ended up playing Desert later in the day behind the tournament. The condition of the course was night and day between Mountain and Desert, I think it's fair that my grade is based on Mountain, the worse of the 2 since that's where some of you could be assigned to play. On the Mountain 9: Tee boxes were very thick and really needed to be cut. Fairways and roughs were inconsistent and had many under construction areas. The parts that weren't being worked on wasn't great either. Random spots on the fairways had rough conditions. Piping a drive down the middle, landing where the fairway was supposed to be could mean your ball is in 2 inch rough. The greens were the worst I've played anywhere. I think the last time I experienced greens this slow and bumpy was in Whittier Narrows, a course I've never returned. It looked like they were trying to cut a few of the greens down to half size. Either that or the greenskeeper forgot to mow half of each of those greens. The green on #6 was completely destroyed. Looked like an under construction fairway, at best. Barely any grass on it. On the Desert 9: Much better condition everywhere. The tee boxes were still a bit thick, but fairways were more consistent, and the greens were rolling much better. Still a bit on the slow side, but after putting the green on the Mountain 9, the greens on the Desert 9 felt like a marble floor. We saw a lot of work being done on the course, and I hope they improve in the coming couple of years, especially their tee time logistics. I really liked the layout and look forward to giving it another shot in a year or 2. For now, I wouldn't bother.

Played on august 25 afternoon. After seeing so many bad reviews and hearing from a friend that played here about 5 months ago I didn't have much expectations. Course is actually in good shape. Always loved the layout of the old Robinson ranch so it was a pleasant surprise they haven't changed much of the layout. They added some palm treees here and there, made the course more of a desert layout, and got rid of a lot of shrub making the course alittle easier. Bunkers need some TLC, but the greens are great like the good old days. Will be coming back even though it's a hr and half drive from OC

If you are coming out here expecting anything that resembles the old Robinson Ranch, forget it. First three holes were nice and in decent shape. Then you hit a stretch where the fairways are terrible and there are large portions that are just dirt. Sand traps are hard and have weeds in them. Tee boxes shaggy. Green were the best part. Slow but true. Still no rough on a lot of the holes so if you miss a little, you roll out. Was 95 degrees and no water in the on course coolers. I would love to tell you about the back nine but after spending 3 hours and 10 minutes on the front 9, we quit. Maybe during the week, this would be worth it for the price. The really big problem is that for what they are charging and the conditions, it is almost all high handicap players here. I have no issue with that except this is a tough, long course and it really slows down. Never saw a marshal. I will say the guys in the pro shop were really nice and seemed genuinely concerned about our complaints. They did give us rain checks for a future date. I used to love this place. I am hoping they get it back together but they are not there yet.

Get over it the course is in much better condition than last time it's a very good layout and a lot of the additions to the course I like.
OK it's not 100% but please it's better than most public tracks in so cal and the staff is the friendliest around I will visit more often for sure!

Played 7-10-17 on a GN deal for $4.49 teeing off midday as a single and finishing in 2 1/2 hours with some minor waiting on the back nine. Tee boxes were in descent shape, they had good coverage that was a little thick and they were mostly level. Fairways had some very good areas and some very bad areas. A lot of the landing areas were nice and lush with good lies but there were a lot of spots that were very thin and some small areas of bare dirt. Rough? The rough is what the valley course has almost always been, very thin to dead and dirt along fairways, with it being in a little better shape around the greens, maybe 1-2 inches. Was in one greenside bunker that even though it looked liked it hadn't been maintained in a while still had descent sand to hit from. Greens were in pretty nice shape, semi soft and rolling slow with an occasional bump. Overall looks like they are improving the course a little at a time, but still much better than when it was just died grass and dirt.

Played today in 100 degree weather with a $39.00 Groupgolfer coupon. I am happy to report that conditions are improving and the course was much more playable than it was three months ago when I last played here. The driving range is now all artificial turf and you hit off of brand new mats. Painted yardage lines and plenty of yardage markers are helpful but I miss being able to aim at pins on "greens" like it used to be. The course layout is the same but some of the tee boxes on the back nine were moved up (blue tees where the whites used to be for example). Out on the course you will find artificial turf at strategic locations where the carts enter and exit the cart paths. Also they've used artificial turf on the paths leading from the cart paths to the tee boxes. One final change: the back nine on the Valley is now called the Desert nine. Once the front on the Mountain course is restored they will have three nines: Valley, Desert, and Mountain. For now the Mountain is not open but it was good to see the greens being watered as I drove in.

Decided to give the "New" Sand Canyon CC a shot today. Since I live in Santa Clarita, I thought I'd shoot up and play the twilight rate. I don't think anything has changed since the 5/10 review by chipper28. First, the guys in the pro shop are great. It's still a work in progress.
The greens are still pretty darn good, just on the slow side. The tee boxes had not been cut for the week yet. You have to stay in the fairway because there is hardly any rough. With any speed, your ball will run off into the ground under construction or what baranca there is still left from last summer's fire.
You know, I always liked the Valley Course more than the Mountain and I think some of the changes are nice. They've taken out some bunkers that give you more choice. On the first hole
I swear they took out bunkers on the right. I cut the corner on the right of the first hole and had a sand wedge to the green. Due to the fire, they no longer have any brush on the left side
of #11. I always go left for some head case reason and sure enough, I was left again today.
But now, it's just a sand wedge hard dirt up and down. My driver and fairway woods were spot on so I scored well today.
I believe this course will be restored to past glory, but it is still months away. I was told by a member that a Hotel is going up and they will restore the first 9 holes of the Mountain to make
Sand Canyon a 27 hole resort.
I don't think the course is worth any more than the $35.00 twilight rate right now. As always,
stopped upstairs for a "Fat Tire" on tap. I'll always come to practice and hit balls there and at Vista but, I'm going to let a few months go by and see how the course gets thru the summer before I play again unless I get bored and play twilight again.

I was hesitant to play the "new" Sand Canyon CC after reading the previous ratings from almost 2 months ago. But my group found an offer online which we couldn't refuse...even just to check out the new changes. First the good. I've always enjoyed entering through the RR gates and the winding driveway to the classy clubhouse. From the road the Valley course looked mostly green but there were obvious signs of maintenance around the rough and waste areas. But that was to be expected. The pro was super friendly and even gave us free range tokens to warm up and tee off whenever we were ready. I hadn't played here in years and don't really remember the holes but the first tee box (like most of the tee boxes) was in pretty good shape, which really raised our hopes for the rest of the course. It's not an extremely long course but the fairways were pretty tight, and look even tighter from the tee boxes. The bunkers where mostly full and had thick wet sand and were very challenging. And the greens were pretty good. Not very hard yet held the irons shots without making much of a divot...strange. Putts rolled mostly true but a little on the slow side. The not so good. Maintenance crews are still a major presence throughout the entire round. The fairways had decent coverage and were in need of a mow but center fairways were fine, just as you move away from center the problems begin. The rough was hardpan and funneled most stray shots into the dry waste areas or brush. We decided that any shots that would be deemed in the rough were played as GUR just to be fair. Overall my general opinion is that it's great to see this place reopened and the major improvements and additions the crews were working on. Conditions are still sloppy but good enough to play and have a decent time...given the right day rate. SC is still challenging where club selection is a premium. If you don't expect great conditions, getting around here is still enjoyable. You can see the vision they have planed and are starting to implement which gives me high hopes that they can somehow keep this place watered over the summer and someday get the Sand Canyon back to its former best. But I wouldn't expect that to be possible for at least until the fall or another year. We'll be back!

Played yesterday (Sunday), 1:00 tee time, $45 riding. We had a foursome of Tony, Charles, and George, all from the Meetup.com Los Angeles Golf Group. Not too much to add to TBD's review. In fact, they have yet to run a mower over the fairways. All that new sod? It needs water. I just saw thousands of dollars of new sod that was just laid down poorly, then dried to the bone because of the lack of water. No reason for cart path only because of the total lack of maintenance from tee to green. The changes are nice, though. I cannot give the course a rating at this time because of this. I hope the course gets some water, because it will not be course without it. I can't recommend this course at this time.
