Very fun layout here with elevation changes, and shape of holes. A few forced carries to make it more interesting depending on the tee box. Tee boxes themselves could use some help, as many were dome-like. Fairways were green, yet very firm. Rough was good off the fairway, but big slices/hooks would leave you in unfindable brush. Sand was fluffy and easy enough to get out of. Greens were 1/2 punched vertically, rolled mediumishly slow on both the aerated and nonaerated sides. Pin placements were tough, as some were next to slopes, going a foot or 2 past the hole ended up on another tier on some. I would play again for a decent rate. Can get slow on the weekends, but nothing horrible. Bring a few extra balls if you are not a concise golfer.

Played here yesterday with the LA Golf Group and we had fun playing a rotating red/white/blue tee box format, though it was technically green/blue/gold here. Even though the course is short overall, playing the tips (gold) on some of the holes was definitely a bit ambitious for our crew! We played a twilight rate of $55, which isn't bad for a Sunday in OC. Pace was a bit slow at about 5 hours.

The course was in decent shape. Tee boxes fine. Fairways are very thin and dried out, providing lots of roll-out on drives (which is sometimes helpful and sometimes harmful with all the hills and hazards throughout the course). I had some lies that were very firm underneath and others where the turf was softer. The rough was mostly OK. Sand traps were excellent with good soft sand (at least the ones I was in). The greens had recently been 1/2 aerated. Rather than a back/front split, most holes were aerated lengthwise. However, the holes weren't big and the sand was light, so it really wasn't bad putting through any of the aerated areas. Both halves were nice and soft. Very receptive, making for aggressive plays on this target course. A refreshing change of pace after playing several other courses with super-firm greens lately.

This was only my second time playing here. I enjoyed the layout the first time and also yesterday. I like tight, target golf and that's what you get here. Short yardage overall, but very hilly and unforgiving in some areas with narrow fairways, many environmentally sensitive hazard areas, a creek that crosses through most of the back nine and a large pond that comes into play on 9 & 18. Very few flat lies on the entire course. Not everybody will enjoy this layout because you'll probably have at least one blow-up hole. It's almost unavoidable, but that's part of the fun if you ask me!

I like the layout. Its a fun course. Put it in you're rotation especially since the rates are down ($40 for senior including cart).

Played with a buddy at 3:00 on 3/8 getting a great rate on golfnow ($32). Not only was it not raining, but the threat of it appeared to have scared away most other golfers. The two of us got through 15 holes in a little under 2 and a half hours.

Tees: Gold
Tee boxes: Nothing to complain about. #3 was a bit chewed up but that's to be expected with all the short irons and wedges used on this hole. A couple others were soggy(#12 and #14) but after the rain you had better be expecting it!
Fairways: Dormant but perfect to hit off of. A couple soggy spots in the low lying areas, but that's to be expected. With that being said though, I didn't have a single mud-ball in the fairways.
Rough: Lush and juicy. Wet winter rye after rain is Kikuyu's slightly less evil little brother. I had good lies in the rough all day.
Bunkers: Plenty of sand. They were wet (shocker!) so any other comments on playablity would be irrelevant.
Greens: Surprisingly good for afternoon Poa after rain. I expected footprints everywhere and the greens to be very bumpy but it just wasn't the case. There were a few unfixed ballmarks but that was easily remedied. The greenskeeper did have some interesting pin placements throughout the day. I think I hit 10 greens which is about 2 more than he hit with those pins.

Overall: For the rate we got, this round was a steal. I would never pay the rack rate here however. Also, this course will not be for everyone. It is EXTREMELY narrow with a lot of elevation changes. If you aren't patient, this course will kill you and laugh while doing it.

You have to hit it straight here. Not a long course. Nice layout in the foothills of Fullerton. Maturing course. Lots of trees, great white sand traps, elevated tees, and some water. Real nice water features at 9 & 18. Worth another loop.

Detailed review:
Played today for the first time at Coyote Hills. Got a deal for $50 bucks to get out at 12:15. Met an old man on the driving range who said that this course and Black Gold are both "piss ant courses", so that tempered my expectations right off the bat. Not sure who set up the range today, but they put it on the only part of the grass that's a down slope, so everyone was hitting from behind the rope on the flat part.

The teeboxes were green with plenty of good grass to hit from. I would say that they were better than average for a course this time of year.

The fairways were dormant all the way throughout the course. As a result, you could definitely get a good kick or some extra roll out of a good tee shot.

Greens were bumpy and riddled with divots, but fast and true. MOST holes look like they're going to break one way or the other but they are dead straight.

Rough was thick, lush and green. Everything you'd expect it to be. Make sure to take an extra club and swing all the way through or your club will for sure get caught in this stuff.

Bunkers were soft and fluffy, they really did a good job here.

Overall this is definitely a course that I would make the hour drive to again. They just lowered their rates so twilight gets you out for $45 bucks now with a cart. They also have a hell of a deal at $179 for the year. If I lived closed I would be all over that.

I played Coyote today. Got out at 1:20 hit some balls on the range nice mats. POP was 3.5 hours nice smooth round until last 3 holes were we had to wait for 5 min on the tee box. The worst part of the course were the tee boxes were on every hole they were in bad shape. Fairways are dormant but look to be coming back a little but overall in nice condition. Rough was a little thin in the first 6 holes but then became almost overly long. Greens were great and rolled nice and had a good speed. Best part of the course are the sand traps. They looked like something at pebble beach. A little expensive at $75 for twilight with dormant fairways but overall was a very fun round.

Played sun 12/30, 10:20 am tee time; rained on friday pretty steady for most of the day, so curious how course drained... not too bad... a little damp in some areas of the fairway, but all playable. bunkers in good shape. greens were fast and true(about 11 stimp). quite a few divots, mostly due to cart path only... then, despite the weather report of 0% chance of rain, got dumped on starting hole 11.. i mean pouring. went in for food and wait out the rain... unfortunately, despite the rain letting up after about an hour, course was very soggy, and it was freezing... so unable to finish round. all in all, course was in good shape considering.

I really enjoyed the layout of the course. The only 2 negative things I had about the course was the greens were a little sanded so the ball would roll slow to medium to fast making it tough to read occasionally. And the other, I never once saw a marshal which would've been nice because we were a twosome and caught up to a foursome on the 12th hole and they wouldn't let us play through even as it was getting dark. In all, it was a great course and I will definitely play it again.
