Back to Mile Square for a GK Cup 19 match with FirstFlightFX-101 on a perfect day for golf. Conditions at Mile Square continue to be very good. Greens are consistent, roll medium-fast, and have good coverage. They are pretty firm and even wedge approaches were taking big bounces. Ballmarks as a result are pretty small indentations and sometimes can’t even be found. Fairway lies are good and rollout is good as turf is getting drier. Rough in many places has dried out with the summer and is thinned, but around greens you can still find lush areas. Traps have plenty of fine-grained heavy sand. Tees are level and mostly OK – a couple of the par-3s were more torn up/bare. Course was crowded after a morning group outing and pace was steady but deliberate at just under 5 hours. Still recommended.

Played here with mild temps, blue skies & light winds. I met up with GK'r dconnally to put in our first match of cup 19. We warmed up on the range with mats. There are 3 putting greens and a chipping/sand green(1 putting green was closed & being looked after by greens staff). Check in was smooth and orderly. We were paired up with youngsters Vince and Cole, gentlemen golfers, and bringing the long ball.
Tees were mostly good, until the back 9, where about 5 of them were drying out and showing mixed bag of turf to terra coverage. Still, they are level and you can find your better 3points to launch from.
Fairways were good, healthy enough to provide good play from and trim enough for some generous roll out.
Rough was healthy and with a variety of challenging cuts(but never really penal). Only a few areas on the back 9 were noticebly patchy, but well into the second cut.
Traps(all) were the highlight, with nice texture and brightness, and showing signs of recent machined grooming. Dave mentioned recent renovations to traps, and it shows.
I found the greens to be favorable for judging speed a break, while rolling smooth and medium pace. They felt slightly softer underfoot, than the way they were holding and showing ball marks(firmer and with more release than expected). This didn't take long to adjust to.
The drink cart was absent today, but the snack bar was open, quick and freindly. The POP(4.5hrs) was steady, and I saw the Rangers patrolling out there about 5 times(very minimal waiting). A non-shot gun tournament had preceded us, but the pace and greens reflected their respect for golf. Rakes, ball washers and plenty of course restrooms. I had a good match with Dave, scored well and would return here again.

Wallked on Friday morning teeing off at 7am finishing in 4:05. The greens were in great condition rolling smooth with medium+ speed and holding shots. The fairways had very good coverage. Tee balls had some rollout but not a lot. The rough around the greens was good and long enough to affect chips but not too penal. Rough along the fairways was mostly good with some thin/bare spots. The bunkers were in excellent condition. They were groomed with quality sand. There was a foot print or two on occasion. I guess some people are afraid of rakes. The tee boxes had decent coverage although a couple of the par 3 tee boxes were a bit chewed up. Along with the new sand in the bunkers it appears to me that the overall condition of the single course has continued to improve over the last six months. The staff is friendly.

Played Mile Square on Sunday, 5/29/22, joining a threesome of friends at 1:22pm on a sunny, breezy great day for golf. Walked on and was paired up within about 15 minutes. These guys were enthusiastic players and brought lots of beer and harder liquors. We moved slowly but steadily as the course was pretty crowded, finishing in about 4.75 hours, as things started jamming up on the back 9, especially the last 5 holes that were imported from the old Players Course.

Overall conditions are very good. Greens are pretty receptive, have good coverage, and roll smoothly at medium+ speeds. Too bad there are so many unrepaired ballmarks everywhere. Fairway lies are good and rough is generally pretty short. Tees are level and traps have good quality sand, but most had many unraked areas from earlier players, despite readily-available rakes.

No senior green fee rates on weekends. No cart girl today – there’s a snack bar at the turn. Didn’t see a course marshal. Looks like some construction work has started on the bones of the abandoned course. Future park facilities, I believe.

Recommended.

Played Mile Square today teeing off at 11:45 and course was very busy as well as the restaurant and driving range. I played with Vince, Chris and Gus and we all rode and played the white tees. Tee boxes were all level and some have been resoded and I didn’t see too many divots so someone is filling them in which is good. Fairways were recently mowed and most of the fairways if not all were in excellent condition however if you’re a foot or two off thick rough awaits you. Bunkers have way too much sand in them and I plugged a few times however the course is making a lot of positive strides around the course which is a good thing. Greens are firm and hold shots well and are great to put on now. The course is great to play with generous fairways and a very nice layout now that there is only 1 course. A great time was had by all and I would play it again anytime. Definitely recommended..

Just finished playing Mile Square. I agree with the prior reviewer. The course is pretty much green all around. They have also filled the sand traps with new sand. POP was a little bit over 4 hours. At $61 riding, it is a little pricey but is one of the lower priced courses for the OC.

Played this morning at 8 as a single joining a 3 some and finished in 4:15. Course was not very busy with many 3 somes and 2 somes out. It was my first time playing the new 18 hole layout. The first 13 holes are the Classic first 13 then the last 5 holes are from the Players old course. All in all a good layout. The 16th green is going to take some time to grow in but it's certainly playable. The course is in good condition and the greens as always were very nice. This course is the best value in Orange County.

Played Wednesday, 3/2. Teed off at 6:50 finishing in 4 hours. The greens rolled smooth with medium/fast speed and held most shots. The new green on 16 has greened up a bit and the sod lines are less noticeable than my last review 5 weeks ago. The fairways have good coverage and decent rollout with a few thin spots. The rough is mostly good with some thin/bare spots mostly found in the trees. The rough is long enough to affect shots but not too penal. The bunkers were in good shape. It appears the bunkers on the back nine that did not have new sand 5 weeks ago have been filled. The new sand in the bunkers is a nice upgrade. The tee boxes have mostly good coverage and are reasonably level. The grounds crew appeared to be prepping the par 3 fifth tee box for new sod.

It was sad to see the players course close but extra effort appears to be going into the overall conditions of the new 18 hole configuration. This is the second time playing the new 18 and in my opinion the new finishing 5 holes provides a stronger finishing stretch than the previous 5 holes (4 of which were added when the players was built). The staff was great.

I had booked MSGC for a GK Cup match but my guy had truck trouble and never made it. We had been messaged on the site by GKer lkmckin that he wanted to join us – as I was already there we went out as a twosome at noon, following a foursome. I was going to play Whites (6,071) in the match but joined Lindsay on the Blues (6,554) on this very blustery day, and spent the round hitting lots of long irons and hybrids and failing to reach greens. Most greens had pretty wet run-ups, whether from watering or the bit of rain we had the night before. Greens themselves were pretty firm and often showed almost no marks from approaches, while a few were softer and recently watered. Greens rolled at medium+ speeds and could be crazy quick downhill. Fairway lies were good, rough was generally low but could be clumpy, and tees were fine. Most of the bunker renovations have been completed – the new white sand is very soft and heavy – you need to make a strong pass at the ball to get out of the bunker. The sand should continue to settle in over the next couple months. Played in just over 4 hours. Recommended.
