Played this morning and it felt like El Nino already hit. Course very wet and over 1/2 of tee boxes tore up and muddy. Was in 2 bunkers and both times had to take a drop as the ball ended up in a puddle. I hope it's just because of the late summer we are having but not up to the Quarry usual high standards. That said, going back next week, can't say no to $38 round. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Course is in distinctly average condition. Signs of minor maintenance here and there too.

Overall, track is not up to typical standards. Tees are either being seeded or have recently been, so several markers were moved forward as mainly the blues were roped off on about 40% of holes. 3 others were being thatched in prep for overseeding and the rest were semi-thin (5.5/10). Fairways were fast, firm and semi-lush in spots (at best). The low humidities and dry winds of the last few weeks have taken their toll. On the bright spot, the ball is popping once it lands (6/10). Rough is similar in condition, but with some juicier lies around greens (6/10). Bunkers are rock hard in fairways and thin with a solid hard pan just below surface around the greens. Poor overall (3.5/10). Greens were painfully slow (estimate 7 on stimp at best) and pretty bobbly. Not much was tracking well and if it did it got bumped off line (5.5/10).

Also, I am hereby officially starting my non-scientific and completely home-spun petition to have a cart path built from 15 green to 18 tee and then play 18 as 16, 17 as is, and then back to 16 to finish. Let's face it, 16 really is the true closing hole here. PM if you agree. (minimal excavations required to make this a reality)

Played today, 11-22-15 with GKer Sydney703. We had a tee time at 1:00 pm which was the earliest we could get with our Underpar voucher. We got there an hour early in hopes of being able to get out earlier which we did, at 12:30, thanks to Chris in the pro shop. We were paired with two very nice single players.
The course conditions were ok but definitely not as good as previous times I've played there. While the fairways were extremely hard and bumpy, which I had a hard time hitting off of, the approaches were beautiful which made chipping much easier. The greens were soft and smooth with not too many unrepaired marks. The bunkers had little to no sand- unfortunately I was in many of them today.
When we started there there was a group in front of us but they were nowhere to be seen after the second hole. I think they took a wrong turn somewhere. It left us with no one in front of us the rest of the round and we finished in just under 4 hours.
It was a a very fun day.. hopefully next time I'll play better...

Played 10/20 with GKer dconnally, 7am tee time, we started a few minutes late. A twosome pulled up just as we were leaving the first tee to join us, they were playing the red tees which resulted in a somewhat uneven pace - total time was just under 4:45.

Overall conditions were good. Fairways were very good with little divot damage, tees ok (some not quite level). Rough was patchy, some lies between clumps very challenging and the thicker areas if the ball stayed on top it was pretty easy but if it settled you were in trouble. The only bunker I was in was ok, pretty wet but playable.

Greens rolled well but didn't hold really well unless you hit it perfect - biggest issue was a LOT of unrepaired ball marks, even that early in the day. Not sure what it is, but apparently those who play this course don't take the time to fix them - people, FIX YOUR BALL MARKS!!

Snack shop at the turn was open, cart girl came by twice, other service was very good. Other than the greens it is definitely worth the money but they really need to do something about all the ball marks.

Played early morning Tuesday, 10/20/15, at 7am on a clear sunny day with little breeze. Joined by GKer HemetGolfGuy, playing the blue plates , using an Underpar coupon I purchased. Course was very wet from morning condensation, on top of being pretty lush and well-watered, apparently. Greens were very firm and did not hold shots well, but rolled well at medium+ speed. All greens showed some recent and many old ballmarks. Fairways were fairly lush and gave good lies. Rough could be lush, clumpy, or bare. When clumpy, the ball often sat down between clumps, making solid contact difficult. Traps were uniformly wet, hard-packed, and lacking sand in the playing layer. Tees were ok, although par 3s were more damaged than others, but blues get less use. Saw the cart girl a couple times. Almost had a head-on with a clueless ranger. Joined by 2 older guys who usually play Goose Creek - they were nice and enthusiastic but very short with all clubs, and overall POP was 4:45.

First time at the Rock today and it was a unique and unforgettable experience. This place feels like one of those fancy new tricked out video games with crazy greens carved out into limestone rock amphitheaters, but it's real. All of it. You marvel all the time at how they made it work so well. Kudos to the engineers, designers and laborers. Played the white tees with a friend and another pair of gentlemen who knew the course pretty well - that was helpful. We had a 1pm tee time but got out a bit before that after hitting a few balls on the range. Quick and easy, efficient and friendly service - no hassles whatsoever with the underpar.com deal we used for the round. Again, the layout I found totally fascinating. So many unique qualities along the way, elevations both up and down, strategic landing areas, lots of risk-reward (like #9), the physical geography shaping holes, holes 16 and 18 going back to the clubhouse (bit odd, but who could care at a place like this?), etc. While our POP was not the greatest with a few slow groups in front of us, that had little to do with my feeling of this being a very long round. It was the golf, not the waiting. It was such a very inclusive experience that every hole seemed to take forever. And that in a good way. I was physically tired after 18 even with a cart, and that rarely happens. This course still challenges your physicality. Conditions wise, pretty optimal, but to satisfy the nitpickers, the greens late on Sunday after a busy weekend were somewhat bumpy, but still rolled true when not, but were pretty tough to land on and gave away plenty of roll if your chips and pitches weren't perfect. The sand was probably a low point - none of the fluffy stuff you'd expect when seeing the rest of the course. Tee boxes were large, so naturally some were uneven, but always a good spot presented itself. The rough was super penal and very consistent, thick jail. And if not lucky enough to land there, the desert surroundings eat up the mistakes. Fairways? Look, they're closing down for re-seeding next week, so while the coverage was excellent, the fairways were a little thick and spongy, especially on the back 9 (#16 in particular). Not holding it against them at all. Who complains about terrific coverage? All in all, a really wonderful all around day and Oak Quarry moves into my top 10 of all time for sure. Oh yeah, cart girl was around a lot but really should have water stations every two holes. That should be standard. Carts were nice with GPS. Didn't eat there. Go play there. That's it. Oh and thanks Wangster - we took the 60.

Not sure if anyone playing here Sunday (10/18/15) will read this review but note that the I-10 east is reduced to one lane at Sierra so it can get quite backed up if you are traveling that way. Take the 60 freeway instead.

Tee Boxes - We played the blue tees. I would say 16 tee boxes were very green, lush, and smooth. The other two tee boxes were in decent shape but if you tee off just a foot or two behind the markers, you should have no problem finding a very good spot to tee off on. Glanced at the white and red tee boxes while on the cart and they all seemed to be in very good shape.

Fairways - There was one spot marked as ground under repair on hole #2 but it's a small area so it probably won't come into play. There were few other patches here and there marked but they were more towards edge of the freeways so it doesn't really impact your play unless your ball somehow magically lands right in that spot. Besides those patches, all fairways in very good shape. I think people feel obligated to fill their divots because the course is in such a good shape.

Rough - If you find the "grassed" rough, it is very playable. Not terribly deep and very lush. If you find the hillside, good luck finding your ball and if you walk a foot into the hill, be prepared to have a lot of scratches on your legs.

Bunkers - I was in one fairway bunker and it was somewhat hard. It was still wet from the morning dew. Greenside bunkers seemed to be in very good shape. A lot of sand. I had a very tough time in two of them due to the moisture but I can't hit out of bunkers even when they are soft and dry so I won't comment on them.

Greens - This was my third time at Oak Quarry and greens seemed to be the slowest I've seen them but it's probably the moisture. Speed did pick up at the back nine but I still think I've seen the greens here faster. I personally have no preference so I don't know if it's good or bad. Besides the speed, all greens were in very good shape and putts rolled smooth. (Except for that one time where I thought I hit a perfect putt with perfect speed from about 40-50 feet out and it goes over a poorly fixed ball mark a few feet from the hole and slightly changed direction. Ugh!)

Customer Service - Service here has been great all three times I've been here. When you arrive, they will come to your car, offer to take your clubs for you and by the time you check in, your bag is already loaded on the cart with your name on it. I tipped the guy $5 as he was picking up my club because last time I was here, I couldn't find the guy (probably went to load someone else's bag) so couldn't tip him. I'm not quite used to hospitality like this at golf courses so I hope I didn't tip too little. Check in couldn't have been better due to the discount I got. :)

Beverage Cart - Maybe it was due to the weather cooling down and playing in the early morning, I saw the beverage cart only once on the back nine. The other two times I've played here, I probably ran into it 2 times on the front, and 2 times on the back.


* On a side note, Oak Quarry drives me crazy because it raises my expectations of what golf course conditions should be and the next time I play my usual course, I will probably be complaining about conditions the entire round.

Played the course as a four some on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 9 am from the blue tees. We play the course once or twice a year and it continues to improve every time there. The greens were fast and undulating. The fairways were much better then last time played and the rough was playable. The bunkers could use some work, not much sand in them. The course continues to be a great round for the money.

My buddy got an online deal for a twosome for $109 and we paid for the third at full rate ($100) and split the cost. 1:16pm Sunday 10/11/15. Went out right on time and in the car driving home at 5pm.

Tee boxes were good, level and pleasant. Fairways were super lush and everything all the way up to the greens was Grade A. Staff was very friendly and we saw the drink cart 3-4 times (super important in 100 degree heat). Also thought the putting green was fantastic and range was super serviceable. Tom the starter is a great guy.

BUT...and a big but...maybe it was just the afternoon on a Sunday...but the amount of ball damage on the greens was pretty absurd for such a nice place. I had to fix old ball marks in my line on nearly every green (I fixed 3-4 others each time too). I know from watching the wedges I hit react on the greens that grass has a tendency to pop out of it's pitch mark instead of plugging, making it harder to fix...but not impossible. The unmarked putts on the greens rolled very true but they were too far and few between for my taste. I'll be back because it's a fun place but maybe play a dawn patrol time to avoid that nonsense.
