Played with Dconnally on Thursday afternoon and the course is in as good a shape as I have seen it in the 3+ years it has been open. The fairways and greens are great and the sand is in great shape as well. I read a review about this course that said that you could not see the ocean-That big blue thing to the west on holes 1 3 4 5 6 8 9 is the ocean. It plays in a valley the back nine, so the only ocean view is on 18, but it is there. Get out and play this course while you can.

This is one of his favorites and my 2nd time here - course conditions were very good with receptive, medium fast greens, good lies in fairways, sticky rough around greens, good sand in bunkers. Course is very visually appealing, with lots of elevation change, holes framed by wetlands and coastal sage. Only problem was overall slow pace throughout the day, resulting in a 5-hr round. Saw cart girl frequently, water generally available. Very good food at the clubhouse, friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Played here Sunday at 9am 3/13 for the first time on my bday with my bro. Drove about an hour and 1/2. Not a sight of the ocean from the course. They sanded half of the greens on almost all of them good thing the pin placement is on the good side. Bunkers are all good. Fairways are ok, Roughs are good too, tee boxes are ok. I really enjoyed the course coz i played good overall. Nothing really special here. It kinda remind me of Dos Lagos on some holes. Not worth the $110 that they charge on non residents.

Played here for the first time. Just NOTE, this course was recently aerated so my scores may not reflect what this course could be at its best. It is a nice course and I will try to be as impartial but as noted we did play on aerated greens (albeit half aerated greens they were still aerated.)

Best way to describe this course -- A tale of two nines.

Front 9 from the get go this course SCREAMS "INTIMIDATION" with a forced carry. Be sure to knock the ball downhill and to the left or find yourself off the reservation. The contours of the front 9 remind me of upside down bowls where shots roll off to the side instead of the center. Fairways on this side are dormant and dried out looking. Your lies will be thin. Sand in bunkers is well stocked in the fairway AND around the greens. The greens if you land on the right side (the un-aerated side) will be rewarded with a smooth roll. If the greens currently will be any indication of the greens when they completely heal then my best guess is to say wait you won't be disappointed. You will play a lot of downhill and uphill shots so bring more club to bear as necessary. You will also have to play with wind in the afternoon.

Back 9 is another beast altogether. The back 9 face North and is shaded. For some reason it's greener here. As a local called this place, "Welcome to Legoland." I didn't quite understand until some of the most diabolical severe tiered greens I have ever seen. Back 9 is a heck of a lot different from the front. Where the front sides on top of the foothills, the back is carved into the foothills. To that end the course is more favorable to errant shots where the ball tends to roll towards the center of the fairway. Beware though loads of trouble left or right. Sand here is also well stocked. Climes are cooler so bring a jacket in the afternoon. Gotta say I had more fun on the back even with the difficulty. Greens as mentioned are mega tiered. Expect severe tiers with breaks that border on the insane. I have photos that should give you a better idea. I will upload them later today.

Overall I did enjoy myself. As mentioned its two very different nines -- just by look and feel alone. Course knowledge is helpful. Great scenery. Great San Diego weather.

Practive facility was good - range seems a littel far away if you are walking.
Carts used to have GPS but now they do not - looks like they just plain got rid of them.

Course was in GOOD shape, except for the greens. They punched 1/2 of the each green. They have some big greens. And it was nice and sandy. The unpunched side of the green rolled very good. (The greens are going to be nice when they are done.)

These greens also have lots of undulation - so be prepared to be on the right side of the green. Miss to the wrong side and you will have an interesting putt.

Knowing where to hit the ball is a key factor in attacking this course. It can be very intimidating off the tee. But with a little know how and a lot of trust in your game, this course can be attacked in a good way.

There are a lot of scoring holes as well as scenic holes. Take advantage of all the good this course has to bring becuase you will want to come back for more.

Played The Crossings at Carlsbad for the first time yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Beautiful weather, oceans views, great company and a fun shot makers type layout (my favorite kind). The conditions of the course were not as good as I expected them to be because the greens were currently under maintenance. A couple days before our round the golf course aerated ½ of all the greens. I’m glad they did because it looked like they needed it. Given how fresh the maintenance was and the fact the greens account for 40% of Greenskeeper.org’s playing condition rating, I don’t feel rating the course would be a fair representation of the common conditions. In general the fairways on the front nine were dormant and thin yet on the back nine it appears the course overseeded so many lush lies where found. Same conditions pertaining to the rough in that the back nine was more lush and better maintained. Overall the bunkers contained good quality sand and tee boxes well maintained. In general I’d say the course was in GOOD shape.

Although the course was currently not in great shape the layout, especially the back nine, is outstanding. If you like risk/reward golf, this is a dream track for you. It’s tight off the tee but fair. It has many forced carries but none too difficult to clear. Most par 5’s are reachable in two but will punish you with deep bunkers, forced carries over hazards and difficult green complexes if you fail. Perhaps is the most enjoyable element of the course besides its scenic tee shots are the greens. These greens are big and shaped like potato chips. There are severe undulations and many bowl type edges that allow you to play creative chip shots. They will test your putting skills to the fullest. What also makes the course gorgeous yet treacherous to your scorecard are the green complexes. Heavy bunkering with deep/steep faced traps await to challenge the best of short games. Personally I love it. Like I said above I’m a shot maker type of player and get inspired to take on creative visually intimidating layout.

Before the round I had lunch at the Canyon Clubhouse Restaurant. The food was delicious and the place was busy mostly with non-golfers. No surprise as to why. It’s beautiful with ocean views, large dinning area, vaulted ceiling and terrace patio. I highly recommend a bite to eat before your round.

I’m looking forward to playing here again.

Played mid-morning on Sunday, 12/26/10, on a cool sunny day with only light breezes. Had recommendations from 'zachary' for this course so gave it a try. Thought it would be dried out after all our SoCal rain before Christmas, but apparently they got a lot of rain the night before, so course was very wet, with bushy fairways, soft medium slow greens. 'Cart path only' everywhere, so I didn't rate the course. Since it's draped over hillsides above Carlsbad, I would have thought the course would drain better, but there were many fairways with standing water, and mushy conditions in many areas. However, the course was very playable and interesting, although a lot of walking on these slopes really wore me out on the back nine. Much more elevation change than I expected, great views of the coastal hills and ocean, attractive bridge 'crossings' of creeks and arroyos, with the bridge over the creek gorge on #16 especially spectacular, both from above and below.

Pricey ($95 SD County resident rate on 'holiday' time) but upscale facilities and appropriate for good conditioning and ambiance. Cart girl came by several times. Snack shack at the turn. Very nice clubhouse and facilities. Very 'deliberate' group in front of us was 2 holes behind on #10, so we had to call the clubhouse to get the marshall out. Some blind tees shots on par 5s - one of the marshalls was acting as a running spotter on #15, so that's somewhat labor intensive, but no other way to know if the group ahead has cleared. No yardage book, no GPS. Was told the course was 'well-marked', but that means hunting for sprinkler heads, and we were already doing enough walking with the CPO. Greens on the back had a LOT of humps, tiers, and movement - if greens were running fast, those back nine greens would be brutal. Recommended.
