Very much enjoyed getting back out to Harding. Being from the Midwest, really miss playing these old-style traditional style courses with all the trees. Course condition was about what I expected based upon recent reviews. Bumpy firm greens, inconsistent bunkers and a mixed bag when it came to the fairways/rough. Pace of play was surprisingly decent, a little over four hours, but the day was beautiful and the scenery was wonderful, so didn't seem all that bad. Sure wish we had some of these type courses in Orange County.

Fairways and tee were in fair condition 5.0. Greens are still recovering from latest punching. They do a hard punch on these city greens so with the lack of spring rains they are hard, fast, and not very true. Not fair to rate them because they are still recovering. We played late afternoon towards dusk and sited many coyotes. Play took 4 hours and we still got in 16 holes teeing off at 4:00pm.

Sunday round at Harding this weekend with an exquisite 8:10am tee time that a friend nailed down somehow last week. Picture perfect spring day with temps in the low 70s, beautiful sunshine, minimal wind and a sweet spot between groups that saw us finish in exactly four hours while never waiting on a single hole the entire day - how is that even possible? It doesn't get any better than that. I'm not sure when they last punched the greens here but I can't recall Harding's greens ever being this fast or unreceptive to chip shots and pitches. Everyone in my group was rolling chips and putts well past the pins for most of the day and constantly remarking on green speeds. Overall though they're in quite good shape, rolling fast and true and very consistent. (Ironically just checked GK and they are punching the greens tomorrow and Wednesday - nooooooooo! They're quite good right now!) The fairways are another story. They're not bad per se, but they are thin in so many areas to the point of hoping your drive down the middle has a favorable lie with some grass beneath it. I've seen the fairways here in much better shape to be honest, but you will still be able to play them mostly fine. The rough is in good, healthy shape as well. Bunkers seemed to have a working bit of sand in them (I only landed in one - greenside on 16) but they are far from fluffy. Still, it gets the job done. Tee boxes were mostly in good to serviceable shape so no issues there. POP once again was tremendous. Enjoyable layout and one of my playing partners was out from New York and really enjoyed Harding as much for the scenery and sights of wild coyotes and deer as he did for the quality golf experience. He liked it so much that he played it both days out here on his trip - take that information as you like. Good times out at Griffith Park though overall.

Out Friday the 13th as a twosome joining two singles for a 1:20 start. Three out of four playing the whites and all riding. Summarizing first, I thought the overall conditions were very good. Decent and fairly consistent coverage on the tees with no real unlevel issues. Fairways were consistently good as to coverage and lies. Rough was mostly green and not punitive but with both bare and thicker lies occasionally in the mix. Bunker sand was a nice consistency but the state of the grooming, while mostly OK, varied subject to those who came before. Green surrounds were in generally good shape for short game. As munis go, the greens were pretty nice. Consistent with the practice green, they definitely had some quickness to them and required attention to the pace. Nicely challenging, they were clean and usually only gave up modest pitch marks. A warm day, but not unpleasant, it would have been more of a factor if we had been walking. As it was, we kept hydrated and especially by the last few holes, it was a nice day with modest to minimal breezes. Pace was good at right around 4.5 hours. I had not been out on Harding for a good while. I find tee times at Wilson and Harding hard to come by and was surprised to find some options while checking the day before we played. I saw no active aeration on GK and was a tad suspicious there might be some issues to explain my good luck. In the end, no problems, nice conditions and I really enjoyed the day on a venue I enjoyed revisiting. Recommended.

Played today before 7:00, second tee time. 3:45 POP with four players walking, just great at this course. The rough was cut down generally although we had to look for balls at time. The course was in good shape, especially the greens. One of us had played Wilson last week or so and said that the greens were much better. Overally, a great experience on a beautiful day in LA.

Played Harding yesterday early am 640 tee time.

Course was in usual GP shape.

Tee boxes were good , some of them moved up for seeding and maintenance.

Played Harding yesterday early am 640 tee time.

Course was in usual GP shape.

Tee boxes were good , some of them moved up for seeding and maintenance.

Fairways were usual and ok although some annoying little pockets of no grass. Casualties of summer left overs I suppose.

Bunkers were ok but some were just wet and cement like. They needed to be machine raked and weren't.

Greens were pretty good though, nice and filled not too many ball marks and the ball rolled true.

Rough is rough there, it gets touch and with soggy aprons it seems liek you need a lot of varied bounce on your wedges.

POP was ok, we played in under 4 hours.

Played Harding yesterday with a 3 randos.

Nice early round, cool and overcast and finished pretty warm out.

Nice early round, cool and overcast and finished pretty warm out.

Course was in ok condition. Not too many gopher holes or anything, just lots of cut grass.

Tee boxes were fine, sand was good I guess, I wasn't in it. Greens were micropunched a week or so ago, They rolled ok so not too much to complain about.

POP was was ok, busy groups in front of our 855 tee time.

I will try to piggyback on the last review of Harding from earlier today, but it's pretty much spot on and doesn't need much more from me. In short, Harding has seen far better days and it's in dire need of a makeover. The green on hole 15 is one of the worst I've ever experienced at an LA City course. It's just dreadful and frankly embarrassing. The rest were also not in the best of conditions (and inconsistent in terms of speeds), but nowhere near as bad as this one. Fairways are just okay and really just about everything right now is subpar. I'm hopeful that the upcoming greens work will also cover things like thin bunkers and very poorly-conditioned tee boxes. And yes, the missing tree on hole 16 is really a bummer. It absolutely used to shape that hole and while you still need to make two good shots, the character is missing. What can you do? I will always prefer Harding to Wilson (unlike many) but I would not recommend it right now until it gets a lot of TLC.

I played Harding Sat 4/19. Good news bad news, the course isn't in good condition, very dry though out. BUT the greens are being punched 4/22-23. Hopefully with less play, things can recover. I like Harding for an LA City muni, but not so much as it's sister course Wilson. I didn't use the range, I've heard it was upgraded. Smallish short game area (supporting 2 courses.) Plenty of putting areas. Check in (they did ask for my DL before allowing others to check in) is easy in the pro shop. The restaurant that took years to get a facelift is open & seems to be flourishing! The snack shack in the middle of the course that serves both courses from various holes is open too. Tee boxes; bad. Uneven, hard, dry, with spotty grass. Probably the same for past 40 years with the exception of hard & dry. Fairways; Some were decent, many had small patches of dirt, with gopher hole damage rampant. Many had been filled in/repaired with dirt, but poorly done. Spring Gopher season? "Gophers- the little brown, furry rodents!" Yup, need Carl out there... Rough is anything from shin high weeds to bunchy weeds & dirt patches, all with Gopher holes. So dry it's easy to hit out of. Collar areas mostly good. Bunkers ok, at least consistent hardpan with a few inches of sand on top. Oh well, they are meant to be difficult. Greens beat up, some bumpy, others not bad. All have plenty of unrepaired ball marks. More than anyplace I've played. Speed was medium, but a couple were furry & slower. Punching this week is needed. The previous review mentioned the big missing tree right side of 16 or 17 & was spot on about it. Short par 4 was like a slight dogleg because one had to hit a fade around the big tree. Draw/hookers were in trouble. I'm one of them, many times I missed into the trees left. Now it is just a short wide open hole. One of my buddies had a 30 yard pitch to set up his birdie & I had an 80 yarder to set me up for my only birdie. With the flag in the front or middle the hole is just too easy. Bummer! POP; 4:30. Not bad for a sat. 8*30 start time. Nice carts with GPS & BT Speakers. Overall, not in recommendable condition, but better than nothing & hopefully after the greens being punched they will get the rest of the course in better condition.
