Played on 12/13/08. First group out. The starter(Bran don) did not tell us the greens had some sort of fungus and were about to go. They are going to have a real problem with these and the alternates are in mostly horrible shape. He did not tell us that #2 was playing to a temporary green. The tee boxes need serious work for the most part, especially the par 3's. I probably won't play here again for a couple of months until the greens are fixed. It is a pity, because they just raised the green fees so you would think they could put some of that money into the courses.
Also it is one of, or if not the only 18 hole public course on the Westside. I hope they do something quick!

First time for me at Rancho. This is a fantastic layout. Lots of elevation changes, as well as sloping fairways and visually challenging par threes and approach shots. The greens were a little bumpy, but they showed signs of recent punching so no big deal. I was in one of the first groups and the pace of play was lightning fast at a little over four hours.

Arrived at the course at about 6:50am this morning (Sat 11/1) as a single walk-on and, much to my surprise, was sent out at 7:12am. (Everybody sleeping late after Halloween, maybe? Or could it have been the threatening-looking skies?) Course was a mixed bag. The greens were in great shape, soft and receptive, rolling true (although a little slow), and showing no signs of the recent aeration. Around the greens, there seemed to be far too much GUR on several of the holes. There were also some instances where the areas around sprinkler heads had some standing water, far too much to be caused by the brief rain shower we got around 9am. Fairways were a bit inconsistent; some were very good, some were a little thin and patchy. As a walker, though, I noticed that the ground was very, very soft. Overall, it played decent but not great. Getting out that early, we got in a lighting-quick round (by Rancho Park standards) of just over 4 hours.

Played on 10-26-2008 with GKers danoemi and Farewaybob and Bob's friend, Mark. The course has to be the crown jewel of the LA city courses. Great layout, lush fairways and lots of elevation changes to keep things interesting. Greens rolled nicely, although some putts seemed a little bumpy into the grain. They did aerify ealier this month, but it looks like everything has grown back. You have to hit firm putts here, especially uphill. If you get the chance to play here, do it. The course has a little history (check the plaque on 18 tee), lush landscaping, and if a 5 hour round doesn't bother you, then I believe you will enjoy it.

Conditions fair to good but starting to show a lot of brown on the fairways and wear on the greens. Some of the greens were as one of my foursome put it "bumper car" golf. Fix ball marks people!

Overall, I was surprised with the conditions of the fairways. They were a lot brown in larrge patched that didn't seem to make any sense. I would have expected this in the San Fernando Valley courses due to the summer heat and the desire to conserve water, but with West LA being 20 degrees cooler, having fog laden mornings every now and then, I would expect even less than normal watering to keep the fairways mostly green. Hole #7 really brought it to my attention and hole #11 was just as bad, if not worse.

Usually, I rave about the condition of Rancho, but this time I can't.

Course in pretty decent shape, greens were too slow for my taste, otherwise no real complaints. Hard not to like Rancho, but hard to endure the pace of play. Given that only 4somes are permitted and there is really no trouble on the course, why does it take so long???

Played 8/5 at 1:15pm and finished in 6hrs. We followed behind a junior golf tournament and boy was it slow. Especially the back 9. The course is in the middle of taking it's summer beating and it showed. Many brown spots throughout the course but playable. The greens are very slow and bumpy right now. The last 4 holes on the back 9 greens were very bumpy w/ many ball marks. Probably because players are usually tired and don't care about proper etiquette near the end of the round.....I don't know.

Take care of the courses you play on people. I know you will play them again. These city courses that offer up great tracks at an amazing value. Walking w/ a pull cart will run you $29 at Rancho. The Par 3 3rd Hole is playing the alternate greens today and that is the only deviation from what is always an enjoyable and challenging round at Rancho Park.
