Played today and I must say this place gets a bad rap. Yes the fairways are not the best but my ball always found grass. Not always the best grass but grass. The sand is fine (was in a three). The best part of the course is the greens, they are smooth and med-fast and got faster and the day went on. I'm a senior with a county card so I paid $14.00 to walk, so is the price right, you bet. Walked up at 8:15 and was in the car by 12:00, not bad. Will come back any time I'm in the area.

After seeing some improvements in reviews over the last several months, I decided to give Victoria a try after removing it from my rotation years ago.

In a nutshell, if you want nice greens and enjoy golf without high expectations, this course will satisfy you. If you're a Country Clubber who scoffs at bare areas in a fairway, stay away.

Here are more details of my experience:

I had a 9am tee time for a Saturday, and the tee was backed up and we got off about 40 minutes late. After about the second hole though, we hardly waited and the pace moved decently at about 4.5 hours. I walked and it was a pretty decent workout to do so.

Tee boxes are well covered and pretty good. The fairways are a mixed bag. Some have pretty good coverage, some have lots of dirt. I didnt find much issue with their playability though, and played "preferred lies." I'd say this is a course to enjoy a round of golf, maybe not for betting/competition. I wasn't in a bunker but watching my playing partners it looked like the sand was acceptable. The greens, as everyone knows, are the main attraction here. The practice green was running a bit faster, but the greens on the course were true, rolling a medium speed, and looking impressive without any damage or many ball marks.

This course won't be at the top of my list, but I'll return.

Got out to Victoria this Saturday for an early tee time. We were scheduled for 8am but the pro shop had a tournament going in the morning and let us right away. Great job by the pro shop for getting us out early. As for the course, haven't been here in years and must say... Great job of fixing up the course. Greens were the greatest improvement. Not sure if it was cause of the tourney but rolled a lot smoother than what I remembered. This course is pretty wide open but does have some spots to avoid. Hitting it in some brush areas, you will have a tough time finding your ball. Knowing the course will help you playing your misses but they will have to be huge to get in trouble. Also this course is deeper than other public courses if playing from the back. Distance is greatly rewarded here. Overall would play here again, players here are respectful and keep it moving.

Played on Sunday the 22nd with the "jack rabbits" as the first group out. Pace of play was not an issue since there were nobody in front from the front 9 and the back 9. Was back in the car and on the road before 10 to spend the rest of the day with my wife and kids.
Conditions were great for what people should remember about Victoria. Tee boxes were level and had grass, so there were always a good lie. Fairways had grass and there were not as many bare spots as victoria is known for. Rough was not penal at about .5 to 1 inch thick grass, with some bare dirt areas. Greens, which are the best part of the course, were rolling good and held their line.
I could tell the maintenance crew was working real hard to keep this place from going back to its old self. I enjoyed this round and will be back again.

Was driving by and decided to stop and see if any improvement has come about? Good - customer service, the greens and no traffic. Checked in and on the course in 5 minutes. Bad - fairways. Tee boxes were OK and acceptable. But at least now, the fairways are hard and not muddy and patched, so you will get a lot of roll; a good tight lie (only thing out there) and yes the occasional bad lie, which you need to move. You can see where a lot of the patching and seeding has taken hold from last year, but w/o more water I don't think it will stand up? Greens are still good and hold shots well and putt well. No divot damage and that was appreciated. The course is in a dormant stage right now and you can see, that if there was more rain and cooler days, they might bring it back? But # 4, 6, 9 are still not looking good and w/o rain, they look like they will go back to what they looked like in Aug/Sept. I was told the there is new management and their specialty is agronomy? I wish them all the best in bringing the course back to life?

Teed off Monday at 6:40am finished in 3:20. The layout of the course is good and walkable. The conditions are a mixed bag. The greens very good. They roll good and hold shots. The tee boxes are fair to good. The bunkers appeared to be good (not in any). The rough had mostly fair to good coverage and some bare areas. The rough around the greens was good. The fairways as a whole are poor. Some fairways have better grass coverage than others. Many areas are patchwork grass and dirt. Several areas are GUR. For me if the course has good greens I can put up with a lot. I booked a tee time special rate as a single on Victoria's website for $30 with a cart. At that price or even the $39 regular rate the course was worth playing since the green complexes are good and the layout is enjoyable. The staff was very nice.

The environmental areas died years age. The pace of play (played there twice last week) is 5+ hours.

I will not review this course in the normal way. Why? Because I want this course kept a secret and if too many of you play this course the conditions will change for sure. I won't even mention I managed to play a round in 3 hours, mid-day Monday. I won't even mention the golf conditions here are noteworthy.

In fact I won't even say that the greens are OK. I will not say they look a little worn but actually roll true. Folks please fix your divot and a few others. I won't even say that the Greens are watered so they accept shots well, not like before where they would roll off the green. Green complexes including bunkers are in good shape and a good part of the allure of Victoria. Fairways are actually GREEN. I mean coverage. There is still one hole that comes to mind (Hole 13) that has a good portion of the hole is GUR but for the most part it's only a minor inconvenience. I refuse to say that Fairway bunkers are hard panish but playable. Stay out of the Rough and ESA. I won't mention that the Tee Boxes are flat.

Forget I mention that the Pace of play was a blistering 3 hours for 18 holes and that is with a 3some in front of us and behind us. One thing I should mention is that this course is the only one that has NOT aerated (actually they did last month) so now might be the perfect reason to try out ole Vic again. I will not say I was personally pleasantly surprised at the conditions. And off the record, For the money definitely it's a deal.

So if you want to play punched greens don't play here. If you want to play 4+ hour rounds then don't play here. If you want to play a course that is easier because suddenly there is decent turf coverage then don't play here. In fact, don't play here at all. I want this course all to myself thank you very much. It's a hidden gem that has a management staff that actually cares about the golf conditions, but you didn't hear that from me.
