Out with GK Gurus Rat-Patrol, gary00 and sbarajasjr for an 8:15am round Friday. Great fellow GKers to tee it up with if you ever get a chance.

Made the visit to Riverwalk because it was the first time they have overseeded in 7 years. There’s been rumors of the golf course closing for some time, let me tell you, golf courses don’t spend that kind of money to overseed if they are closing anytime soon. Over the years Riverwalk has invested a lot of time and money trying to re-establish their bermunda turf or try turf like paspalum. None of this worked. Especially on the Friars nine. Now the decision to be a rye dominant golf course again (only the 18 hole course). You know what, after what I experienced Friday they made the right decision. Fairways after just one seeding (again in 7 years) and only 2 times cut before we played (rye grass becomes more lush with each cut because the blades of grass become thicker) are already in very good shape. Most in great shape. Imagine how nice those fairways are going to look this Spring.

Conditions of the rest of the golf course, greens running excellent. Mostly smooth, mostly firm and holding shots. Rough, mixture of new rye grass and established other grass, varied in length and density. Made for some challenging shots. Bunkers, like Sal noted, besides the Augusta white greenside bunker on hole #2, decent sand, well ranked. Tee boxes, they were in desperate need of a cut, wondering if by the time you read this review they have already been cut. Might explain why some of the tee markers were set aside (we played the blue tees). Overall, some fairways were still roped off. Troubled fairways on holes 3 and 4 of the Presidio Nine (back nine now) still have some bare/thin spots (nowhere as bad as in the past), golf course was still rather wet from the recent rains but other than that in great shape.

Service was excellent throughout the day. Saw the on course food/beverage service at least 5 times, check-in easy, Marshal responded when we asked him to talk to the group in front of us holding up play and the guy loading up our bags had a great sense of humor. Was a super time and will play again this Spring. Check out the photos I posted.

Played here with the fellow Gurus; Gary, Jim, and Johnny in a great day for golf. Having played Riverwalk close to 20 times, I knew what to expect and I must say they are certainly making some improvements to what is now their 18 routing of Mission-Presidio. A wonderful time today even if my game was M.I.A.

Tee boxes: Okay condition on most of the blue tee boxes. The course itself was still quite wet in most areas and the tee boxes were no expectation. On more than a few holes, the markers had been bunched together and moved to an extreme side of the box, so we had to place them where we thought they should go.

Fairways: A marked improvement from my last time here. As Johnny indicated to us, they are over seeding for the first time in years and making a transition in grasses (to rye I believe) so the course isn’t quite where it wants to be, but hone are the days it was nothing but dirt. As Gary mentioned in his accurate review, a few arreas roped off (1 and 3 on Mission, as well as Presidio. Fair roll otherwise and good lies on the over seeded parts.

Rough: Varied, but some areas had some seriously sticky and thick rough. Humbling length on missed or errant drives. The reeds on the river have been trimmed and more than a few of the overgrown brush and trees trimmed.

Sand: Good condition though the bunkers on Mission 2 were Augusta National-white, the rest were beach sand brown; very odd.

Greens: The highlight for me; ran both quick and slow depending on the time of day and green complex. Loved the surface and some of the breaks were mighty tricky to read.

ETC: Carts are basic with basic color GPS. Saw the cart attendant a few times. Staff at pro shop were nice. Didn’t use the range but offers what you need. Layout is fun but not overly challenging. Conditions impressed me for what I expected so will visit again when I’m home!

12/13 guru outing with Jim, Sal, and Mr(birdie chain)GK himself played the blues MIssion/Prersidio in a little over 5hr following a tourney group of sorts with a hard to watch gfroup ahead of us with lessons being given on almost every shot but after a 3 hr front they were finished on 12 and we breezed in to the finish, My 1st time here and was impressed and challenged by the layout, very scenic and felt somewhat remote even in a city setting. Fairways still held a significant amount of moisture and some were roped off, others were mostly lush but soft, and some had thin/bare areas. Rough was wet and in some areas not able to be mowed leaving some difficult recoveries. Tees were level but needed mowing. Found 1 greenside bunker well groomed and nicely compacted soft sand. And then there were the greens starting with the practice area which looked rather beguine until I rolled a few the slope was unfathomable a theme which carried over to the course itself. I struggled all day with pace and break being right with one or the other about 1/2 the time. Condition wise greens were really nice, quite healthy, fairly firm rolling medium fast and mostly smooth. Check in was easy by friendly welcoming staff. Driving range had mats that were beginning to show some wear but nice range balls. Descent carts with interactive GPS. Very enjoyable outing with good playing partners on a course I will definitely play again especially with some good deal offers out there.

Went off (11/12) at 11:20 finished just before 4, no waiting just tough conditions. They are in the middle of overseeding and there are bare areas, wet areas and many roped off areas (CPO). The greens were mostly nice with a few still showing signs of being punched, but mostly ran fast and smooth. Bunkers, mostly, at least the ones I was in, were nice to play from. Hopefully everything will turn green and plush soon!

. . . this course, from the Blues, can play rather long and tough with the wind, forced carries, water, tight landing areas and sloped FAST (at the moment) greens, but is fun and challenging. Great deal on the GK coupon!

Played Riverwalk 18 today using the coupon from GK, such a good deal at $35. Course was in overall good shape. Tee boxes were a little beat up but playable. Fairways were good for the most part, a lot of new sod but mostly playable. Wasn’t in the sand but my partner was and seemed to be good. Greens were good but a little bumpy. They have recovered from maintenance but need a good mow.

For the price it’s a good deal. Pace was under 4 hours and the course didn’t seem to busy.

Played here yesterday (7/10) with GK member Nat and his two friends Bert and Jason on a previously purchased GN tee time for 1pm. Riverwalk holds a special place in my heart as it was the home course for the high school golf team that I could never make and for the previously nice conditions and proximity to my residence, however it has slowly slipped into half oblivion and half potential residential property. The conditions here are nowhere near what they once were and although the prices here are always fair, soon even that may not save Riverwalk. Tee boxes: Decent shape as we played the blues today for some extra challenge. Ground was fairly even and consistency of turf varied from rock hard to melted butter. Overall there were no major issues as just moving a few inches presented new turf conditions. Fairways: Varied from total GUR to decent lie depending on the hole. I distinctly remember hole 1 on Presidio having about 50% of the hole be ground under repair and the turf that wasn't all that great. Other holes like 6 on Mission being much better. It really depended on what hole but overall mediocre. Rough: Penal at times, though it varied as much as the fairways. Some areas had stagnant water and we nearly ran our cart straight into it. Other rough areas were fairly deadpan. The penal rough was challenging to lift the ball from, the dead areas didn't offer much in the way of clean shot-shaping. Sand: I was in only one bunker today but it had decent sand to hit from; more dirt-like sand than beach sand, but my litmus test has always been if I can get out and try for a sand save, then it can't be that bad of condition. Sand was raked in most cases. Greens: The highlight of the round and it saved the day. Good and fair roll and rarely an unfixed divot. Burnout spots here and there and some greens were clearly better conditioned than others but never found one unplayable. ETC: Service was friendly though the cart attendant probably had a bad day. Got out in time and made it around in a little less than 4 hours so I will take that any day on a course like this. Carts were serviceable but our GPS didn't work and our cooler had been taken off the cart. Know for a fact the food here (in the clubhouse) is actually quite tasty but the "grill" at the turn has been flip-flopping between a trailer near the driving range and the window near the cart return and it still isn't very clear. Again, for a price less than $35 it is still more than playable, but at this rate either Riverwalk in its totality will probably close and become condos (that WILL flood mind you) or the course will simply fall into disrepair in the vain of Cottonwood before they re-did things.

Tee boxes in good shape, blue and white were combined on most holes. Most were level and easy to play from. Fairways are a mixed bag. Most are good in the center but the more you go to the edges the worse they get. They need to do a better job of marking ground under repair. Sand was good, a little wet due to the rain but still playable. Greens were in good shape and most rolled well with just a few bumps here and there.

If you can get a deal it is still worth playing but I would not pay the regular rate.

Got out to Riverwalk yesterday with the GK coupon ($35). I usually play this course 3 or 4 times a year. It has always seemed to be a average course at best. Yesterday was no different. They always seem to have issues with GUR on the fairways. The tee boxes were ok and sand seemed about average. The greens were pretty slow but definately the best part of the course. The guys we got paired up with were locals who played it all the time and had a blast playing with them. Hope they finally get this course where it should be.

Played both the 18 and 9 today. Most will remember the mission / presido is now the only 18 holes and the friars has been renamed the sunset 9. I’ll post a review for the sunset 9 also.

Course is in pretty good shape. It’s been a few months since I have played here. The recent rain has helped green the place up. Tee boxes were level with the par 3’s being the only boxes chewed up. The rest were in good shape. Fairways are getting better. Most were green with some brown spots. A couple times I had to move my ball to get an appropriate lie for hitting the fairway. Sand was in gods shape both fairway and greenside bunkers. Greens were the highlight, a little bumpy but nice coverage and rolled at a decent speed.
