Found a teeoff.com deal for the 31st so my cousin and I decided to head out. This course is 1 hour from the Las Vegas area and was a planned master community with up to 7 golf courses planned before the recession in 2008. Sadly only the Jack Nicklaus course was the only thing to be built before then. However this course is fantastic and a great pleasure to play. Check in was easy and the staff was super friendly. When in the pro shop there is a model of the first two courses that were going to be opened the 2nd one being a Nicklaus/Dye coo-design which you can see some of the moved dirt when making the trek to the practice area before they scrapped the plans. The Practice area and 1st tees are a little far from the Club house as they were going to build a massive duel clubhouse near the practice area serving both courses. This practice area is very large and has any type of warm up area you can think of to prep for your round.

Course conditions are in great shape for how cold and wet it has been over the last three week. Tee boxes are all level and lush, I did notice one par three was a little chewed up but not a big issue. Fairways were lush and cut relatively low providing ample roll on most shots, this however made accuracy key as there are bunkers and lakes everywhere that can mess with your sanity during the round. Sand traps were hit or miss, I was in two green side traps that had soft sand but the carpet liner was coming up all around it and caused some issues. Fairways bunkers are on the firmer side but were nice to play from. Rough was cut short around all hazards and would not stop your ball from falling/rolling into the lakes and traps. Greens were the highlight of the round. They were as lush as can be, soft yet quick on speed and just a pleasure to putt on.

This Layout is a lot of fun to play with each hole being different from the last you never get bored. If you get car sick you wont have fun driving down the fairways as every hole has rolling mounds throughout the fairways leaving fun lies and just an overall entertaining day. There is a solid mix of holes with water, desert scape, sand traps, and native bushes. They have very nice gas carts but no GPS on them. We saw the cart girl often and she had warm hot dogs that were fantastic during our 5 minuet rain delay. Over all I highly recommend playing here if you get the chance.

Talk about out in the boonies.....

So, we were looking for a course either in Mesquite or enroute (coming from LA) for a practice round before our three day, Tri State event. I found this course online and the pics looked great as well as being a Jack Nicklaus designed course. Only thing is that the website map pic showed it to be near the 15 freeway so it was a bit deceiving. However, that's my only complaint and that's really not one at that.

Upon arrival, a cart attendant shows up within a minute. I don't know how they knew, but they already knew which group and tee time9s) we were. You always have to be impressed with staff that is on top of things. We arrived an hour early so we headed off to the practice facility. I have to say that in 35+ years of playing and competing, I have never seen a larger or nicer practice facility than Coyote Springs. It is huge! Level all grass range, multiple targets. Bunkers galore, all setup with balls there too. I almost wish there was more time to practice....

Ok, on the course. You're in the desert yet the course itself is ultra lush and beautiful. The course has a good water supply so it appears to stay that way. So long as you can keep your ball in play (on course), everything is healthy. Go a little off and you're in the desert. It gets windy out here so know how to play low shots and adjust accordingly as we experienced as much as a 4 club wind. Most of the time it was 1 1/2 to 2 clubs.

Greens here a huge with a lot of undulation. If you're not an accurate iron player, you can face a lot of long putts as approach shots can run. I found the course to be challenging yet fair and breaking 80 on one of those windy days is playing so seriously good golf. While the St George courses have the beautiful scenery surrounding the course, this course's beauty comes from within. Some holes have some pretty mountain backdrops in the distance but the holes themselves take center stage here. And though it's really out in the middle of nowhere (which I previously felt Paiute was that way), coming out here is worth the drive.

We didn't have any cart beverage service but they supply you with bottled water there. Carts have little ice chests on them with two bottles and the leave an additional two in the cart, along with towels. During our round a course ambassador came out and restocked us with ice cold water so that was nice.

Next time you're in Vegas and if you don't mind the drive, maybe 45 minutes, come out and play Coyote Springs.

Our second round of our recent Mesquite golf trip was to Coyote Springs. We played this course on our last trip to Mesquite and we all agreed that we needed to add it to the rotation again since we all enjoyed it so much. To be honest, this is the course I was most looking forward to playing on the entire trip. I enjoyed it that much.

This course is literally in the middle of nowhere. It is about a 50 minute drive from Mesquite. There is nothing around this course for as far as you can see. It is actually quite sad to be honest. They must have had huge plans for this place a few years ago. There are house pads graded everywhere around the course. You can see areas where it was going to obviously be a grand entrance to a private gated community. The rumor is that there was supposed to be some 6,000 homes and two courses at this place and there is not one single home to be seen and only one course. It is crazy. Someone really lost their shorts here! It's hard not to feel for them.

The weather was by far the worst I have every played in. It was in the mid to high 30s and it rained the entire day. I packed a ton of layers of clothes in my bag but I didn't think to put the clothes in plastic bags. The rain soaked my bag and everything in it. I had no dry clothes to put on through the round so I just had to be wet and freezing. I actually stopped playing after 9 holes because I could not stop shaking and my fingers were starting to tingle. I am definitely a fair weather golfer. This was a struggle for me.

The weather was obviously not the fault of the course. The marshal actually come by on about hole 8 and just looked at us, shook his head, and laughed.

The course was not in the same shape that I remembered it a few years ago but it was also a different time of the year - November last time, March this time. I remember the greenest fairways and the nicest course conditions I have ever played last time. This time was not the case. I could have had my expectations too high or the terrible weather could have had me down - I don't know. It just was not what I expected.

The course had the winter look to it. Brownish dormant fairways and rough. It is conditions I would expect for a course that did not overseed. I am not sure if they did or not, but it had that feel. This was the most expensive round of golf on our entire trip ($160) and it was definitely in the worst condition. It was very playable but just not what I had expected. Again, I may have had too high of expectations or it could have been the weather but I just felt like it was not really worth the green fee at the moment. My opinion.

As for the course, the layout is absolutely awesome. It is one of my favorites. The greens are typical Nicklaus greens. Not one section of the green is flat and it looks like they buried cars under each of them. They would be brutal is they were rocket fast.

This course is definitely worth the drive from Mesquite just not the very high green fees. I think when the weather gets a little warmer, the course will be in awesome shape. It was playable but it did not have that wow factor like I remember from last time. Give it a little time and think it will be back to glory.
