Played New Year’s Day at 6:50 am. Blustery front nine evolved into a gorgeous back nine. Four islands in view from the 16th tee. Service was good although still nothing open early. Standard Covid restrictions. Pace of play was good at about 3:55.

The course is playing January firm and fast. Lusher in the fairway than in prior years, but I had a fade working that was rolling into trouble on occasion. Pretty darn dry overall. Not much rough so nothing to stop the ball. If you were in the the fairway though, it was a good hitting surface.

The greens are really good. Rolling true and fast. They were fun. When the wind was blowing on the front, it was a factor. One guy’s putt on #4 was about 6’ short. The wind caught it and it rolled at least 15’ back. It was like watching a car wreck, you wanted to turn away but couldn’t.

The course is not pristine but it is playable and fun. I got an incredible photo on the 12th green. Get out there if you can get a time.

Played today, Saturday 10/10, before 7:00 am. Pretty tight Covid restrictions still, no chipping or putting green, coffee shop opens at 9:00 am (Covid gets up early?), plexiglass in pro shop, masks in clubhouse area. POP was good, about 4:05. $47 to walk.

The course is in decent shape. Pretty lush fairways with less roll than in prior years. Was not in any bare spots. Rough is a mixed bag and I got mixed results. Sometimes thick, sometimes dirt. I hit more club off the first tee because I have had some bad lies in the rough in the middle of the landing area. Pulled my drive and almost gave up looking before finding it in a thick clump of rough. Oh well.

The greens had been aerated, but only half of them. It was inconsistent on how big of a half. The greens were decently fast on the un-holed portions, not so much on the other sides which are well on their way to be healed but are still soft and slower. I was in several sand traps and they were okay.

Always a good walk, the early overcast skies made a nice cool walk. Got a great photo of Catalina Island behind #10 green, framed by the trees. Nice day on the links.

Out early at the best value golf course in Southern California. Every time I play here, I marvel at the great senior rate to play this course. If it were not a county course, I shutter to think what the green fees would be. As always the staff was great, fast, friendly and efficient.

Course is in even better condition than the last time I played here a few months ago. Maybe because I made a bunch of putts, I thought the greens rolled really well. Fairways have good coverage, and the one bunker I found actually had well groomed sand.

Any day playing here is a treat, but when temperatures soar inland, it is just all that much better to play with the ocean views and temperate conditions.

Invited to play today. Not early but @ 9 AM. Having played here for many years was nervous about a 9 AM time? But we played in 3.5 H. No more fivesomes. Single cart riders. Tee times spread out 10 min apart. And players moved along. Found the course in great shape. Tee boxes were all excellent. Traps were playable, for the most part. Fairways were green, lush (so lush very little roll) and great lies. They also kept many balls from rolling into unwanted areas. A tremendous amount of rough has been removed outside the fairways, as well as a lot of the wire grass. Many trees have been removed and lots of brush as well. In may cases it gives one the feeling of wider fairways and landing areas than in the past. Greens were in great shape all round. And the cutting around the greens and in front of the greens is great for chipping and even putting (like on links courses). Great customer service. Food service is available each day at 9 AM. Eating outside only. Masks at check in and around the pro shop. Very enjoyable round of golf, though they say it has become very hard to obtain tee times? No waiting in the parking lot early AM like before. But they do allow you to sign up and wait for a tee time in the AM should something become available. So for a single or twosome, it might be worth it? Driving range open. Putting greens are not.

5:30am tee time, which was the second group out. No issues with pace of play UNTIL we ran into a very slow threesome which had gone out on the back nine. (The first group played through them, but they did not wave us through?) Fortunately it was only for the last 4 holes, which felt like an eternity)

The course was not in good condition, far worse than when I played here a few months ago, which surprised me because I expected better. The greens were far and away the best part of the course, in fact were the only good part of the course. Fairways were dry and had many "tuffs" of weeds. Rough was so-so. Bunkers were actually not too bad, although not maintained, but did have sand.

The course was deserted when we arrived. I don't think that anyone teed off after us for quite a while. Strange to walk up #2 & #3 and not see any groups playing #1. In all fairness, it was drizzling for the the first 10+ holes

With the overcast and "iffy" weather, some of the luster, which is Los Verdes was absent. No great views of the ocean to enjoy. But for $21, still a fantastic deal.

Played early on Saturday, 6/13. Started around 6:30 and played in 4:10, so no complaints. Beautiful morning to walk the course.

I thought the fairways were greener than last time I played here likely because of more watering from the recent heat we have had. Good roll out though. The edges of the course are more back to normal. We were playing the blue stones and it is funny that those are some of the poorer parts of the blue tee boxes. And a couple of the stones are within three feet of the back of the tee boxes which makes no sense to me. The greens were the highlight. They are speeding up and giving the course back an edge. Downhill putts that were left short two weeks ago were sliding five feet past the hole. Fun times.

Slowly the Covid restraints are being relaxed. Recently I saw a couple of guys sitting above the 18th hole chatting and someone was sent out from the pro shop to roust them out. Yesterday there was a foursome eating at an outside table in that same area. One of the doors of the coffee shop said "Dine In Entrance." So, getting some amenities back.

Played here today (6/10) with a group of friends for the first time ever. Had heard plenty about this being a Torrey-like muni (mainly in views not layout/conditions) and they were right. American Golf run property that is semi-bare bones in what it offers especially now during COVID-19, however the views and setting are worth the visit. Layout is a bit tight, short, and funky at times, but I enjoyed a number of holes. Conditions were about the same as last review, perhaps a bit browner after the start of a recent heatwave.

Tee boxes: Perhaps the worst conditioned part of the course. Often found the white tees had unlevel ground which didn't help any on this highly sloped course.

Fairways: Good shape though I believe they have gotten browner and crispier with 2 days of 90+ weather. No real bad lie and roll was fair.

Rough: Not very penal, for what was around. The trees here are far more punishing than any rough.

Bunkers: Was in a couple of green-side bunkers and they had enough sand to get out a decent try at a sand save.

Greens: Wicked fast at times with amazing ocean pull on most every putt. Very tricky to read break and speed.

ETC: Bare bones everything. Starter in a booth, no pro shop open. To go food was available; no cart attendant obviously. Carts available to ride, no GPS and carts could use some love. Great course for the fair price offered.

Out early done early on a beautiful day on the Peninsula. Excellent tee boxes. Fairways had good cover and good roll. Rough was down and not a factor. No bunkers but they could use some work, like most in S CA. Greens were in good shape all round (no issues). Always love getting out early in Summer on Los Verdes. Excellent customer service at all levels.

Played early today, May 17, just before 7:00 am. Was extremely worried about POP when the group in front of us was a hole behind after the first hole, and had much trouble on the second, but with encouragement from us and the marshal they played at a nice pace after that and we finished in 4:10. On service at the course, the coffee shop was opening for limited take out service as we were making the turn after nine. Looked like the range was open also but I did not get a chance to get up there.

The grounds crew has obviously been out there working on the deeper parts of the rough, such as right on #1, but there are still quite a few nasty areas including under those trees. The fairways were not as lush as last week, particularly on the back nine where they generally looked dry and in need of water. The greens were a little faster than last week but there were some bumps on the front and a few of the greens on the back looked like they were burnt or getting some disease especially #10. That said, they rolled well except for those bumps on the front.

Overall, recommended. It was a gorgeous day out there today.
