Played our GK Cup match on Sunday at Mile Square and were treated to a course that is in nice shape thanks to all the recent rains and a fun, yet fairly straightforward layout. Blue tees play to 6700 yards so it's definitely got a lot of long par 4s to challenge you. Fairways are mostly pretty wide open, but there are healthy trees lining most every hole and a few water features on the back nine to contend with on the day.

FYI, if you're one of those players that likes to rent a push cart, well, they have very old-timey pull carts here with the minimalist of frills that you can get for $10 and they reimburse you $5 after you bring back the handle after your round.

Right now the fairways and rough are in nice shape with good to lush coverage in most all areas. A few thin spots here and there but mostly good times ahead. Bunkers had nice sand in them but it was made tough by the moist conditions following the morning dew that never seemed to burn off until the end. Tee boxes were flat but a little beat up and in need of some minor attention.

The greens were a spotty mix of colors but actually held shots nicely and rolled pretty true all day. They were medium to medium-fast speed all throughout the round, but are not so tricked out that it creates any major problems. Some ball marks to deal with for sure, but no major complaints.

No cart service all day which was a bit strange for a busy Sunday, but the POP was great as we found a sweet spot with the 7:07 tee time and never really waited throughout the entire round, nor were we dutifully pushed hard by any of the groups behind us. Really worked out great in that respect, probably finishing in right around 4-4.5 hours. Ideal pace.

Shame to hear that they'll be closing one of the two 18s at Mile Square some time this or next year, but I understand that it'll be the Players closing its doors, so we'll still have access to this very nice Classic 18 for many years to come.

Play here weekly. Yesterday 4-20-2019 got through in 4.5 hours, great for a Saturday. Greens are 90% healed from aeration two weeks ago.

Teed off Monday at 6:45 and finish as a threesome in 3:10. The Greens were in good condition. They rolled medium/fast speed and played a little firm. The fairways had good coverage with a few thin spots. The rough was mostly good with a few thin/bare spots. The bunkers were fair to good. I was in four greenside bunkers. Two were very good and two were a bit compacted. The tee boxes were mostly good. The staff was friendly.

Very wet and cold, which makes for a long, tough round of golf. Greens were the best part of the course. Difficult to be too critical given the recent weather, not many opportunities for maintenance crew to correct the issues, so just have to allow a little "slack". The only real plus is that the courses are not very busy, so pace of play is much better.

I much prefer the classic to the players course, but at this time of year with all the rain and frost, just happy to be able to play anywhere.

Played here on Memorial Day for $53 walking......a little high in my opinion but it was a nice day and with good friends so it was worth it. The course has suffered a bit since I last played due to all the rains. The course drains pretty well for the most part but there were areas on the back nine that were real wet and you needed to take relief from puddles. Conditions on the entire course we're just average and needed attention except the greens. I think they purposely let the greens dry out in preparation for the rains and it worked out great. They rolled great all day and held shots hit well but they were still firm. Chips really ran out if you didn't hit it right. Repairing ball marks were minimal due to the firmness and we all loved the smooth surfaces as a result. In defense to the maintenance crew, there wasn't much they could do to the rest of the course as wet as it has been, but the greens made this a great day. Play well and enjoy

We played here last Monday at 8:30 with six players. We went out as two threesomes and since we kept waiting to hit on the first 4 holes we decided to join up since no one was behind. We managed to finish our round as a sixsome without ever seeing a group behind us until the last hole. Fun day, great weather, and the course is fine. The layout is a little boring on the classic course but conditions are a little above average and pace is usually good. With the recent rains there's no doubt the course will look even greener then before.

Signed up for a SCGA/Roger Dunn outing at the MS Classic course, beginning at 10am on Saturday, 10/27/18. We had a great day for it, with clear skies, warm with only a little breeze. Starter said greens had been punched about 3 weeks ago. Enough players to have the last group teeing off around 1130. I was hoping to see some GKers out today, but didn’t recognize any names. Was paired with 3 very nice guys and we had a relaxed, enjoyable round. Tee prize included a sleeve of Callaway Superhot Bold (their answer to the electric colors of the Volviks), a $10 RD gift card, and some small stuff. There were a few CTP prizes given out, and a gift card for low net (men/women). Play was as usual for SoCal on a weekend morning, with the round taking just over 5 hours.

Greens were in decent shape – you could still see some light sanding, and they were pretty soft and receptive. They rolled at medium speed with quite a bity of bumpiness. Fairway lies were generally good, as the ball sat up on the kikuyu. Rough could be dry and thin or lush and 2-3” deep. Sand was thin and firm in the fairways and a little more abundant greenside. Tees were OK – you could see the tee construction GKer chevelle mentioned scattered around the course.

Course was in good condition for a relaxed round.

Played Tues Oct 23rd at 7:07 got out early great day to walk. Just barely could see the ball off the first tee. POP was good at 335. The rough was very long, I use a volvik vivid yellow and still had issues finding it. We knew the greens had been punched but decided to play. There were a few bumpy putts, but after 2 holes you realized that they were slow and just had to hit it hard. They were puttable, I made 3 over 15 feet and had many from farther that I ended up with a 14" gimmie. Really do love this course to walk. Interesting side note, there is a major effort to build new tee boxes on all the holes, 2 each on most holes, so maybe new color boxes, or they are shorting up the whites and reds. I mean it does make sense to shorten it up because I bet they get more play from seniors, both men and women. Another side note, I never warm up, usually tee off too early so here is an interesting thing, I was 7 over for my first 5 holes, 1 par 1 boggie 3 doubles, I then went 5 over for the next 13, 9 pars, 3 boggies and 1 double ( thanks to a 3 putt lol ). So I guess the conclusion is that hitting maybe 10 balls would help me, lol but the range didn't open untill 8. Lol

Fun Saturday round at Mile Square with seven buddies making up two foursomes at the Classic course. We played the white tees this time around and found the course to be in pretty darn good condition. But over $80 with cart and a sleeve of balls? Well, that may be my only slight gripe about today's outing. Seems just a wee bit steep if you ask me.

Other than that though, the course is actually in good shape. Fairways are in good shape but you will definitely find a few thin areas and that especially holds true around the greens. The tee boxes are mostly good but a few in need of some TLC. Bunkers were in good shape from what I saw, and the rough was not penal at all. There were some greens in great shape, some in good shape, and one or two that had some thin spots and damage, but overall not too shabby at all in that respect. Speed varied throughout the day but not a lot of trouble to get into on these greens, but they can be quite large so lag putts can be challenging.

Cart service came around often and that was great. There were also some water stations that I saw and that's a nice touch. In terms of the layout itself, the Classic 18 is totally flat and many holes look very similar, but it's still pretty fun to play. Good variety of lengths for the par 4s, par 5s can be reachable with good drives, and most of the par 3s play to around 150-160 yards. Lots of tree-lined fairways to deal with and bunkers are mostly on the periphery so going low is definitely on the cards.

So yeah, nice place to hit the sticks but definitely a bit overpriced on the weekends. Oh yeah, almost forgot that despite the place being pretty packed, POP was quite good for our two groups at just under five hours. And it was a beautiful day out so we all left with smiles on our faces.
