Played a GK Review Guru outing here today with gregholla, apisarski and Kahoutek. We had a 7:52 tee time on Presidio-Mission. We started right on time with a little gap ahead of us (group in front was just finishing the first hole) and it stayed that way all day. No waiting and we finished in almost exactly 4:00. Foggy early and then on the 4th green suddenly the sun burst through and it was nice the rest of the day. I mention this because I feel this course looks and even plays much better under sunlight rather than moist, dreary skies.

Conditions: Some greens showed visual evidence of a somewhat recent aeration, but I don't think it affected how any putts rolled all day. For the most part, the greens were really nice: smooth, medium fast, and very accepting of full shots. I think Kahoutek had one putt bounce on him, but otherwise they were smooth. There's a good amount of subtle undulations on these greens that make them challenging to putt well, imo. Fairways have good coverage but are slightly thin in some spots, which is where the wet early morning conditions become troublesome, at least for me. On the thinner fairways that I know are wet underneath, I tend to try to "pick" the ball too much instead of hitting through it. That's why I'd prefer to avoid the morning fog and play here later in the day when the sun is out and the course dries out some. Rough also had good coverage, although not quite as consistent as the fairways. Not too deep nor too penal anywhere. I was in one bunker and it was really nice. Tee boxes fine all day. All in all, Presidio-Mission looks and plays quite good right now.

Played 10/30 11:15 tee time with Mark and Pat, scheduled for Friars/Presidio. Got sent out a little early only to wait on four in front of us. First tee on Friars was a temporary, about 100 yards in front of original tees. Large bare dirt spots in fairway despite recent resodding. Waited on every shot for first two holes, as did the group in front of us. Next group were the culprits. We skipped 3 and 4 and pace was great the rest of the round. No marshal in sight. I guess it's just the expectation of beating the crowd during the Charger game that got me a little miffed. This is not the place to beat that crowd. Friars greens and collars were decent, still showing signs of aeration and some bumps, but the fairways, rough and fairway traps well below average. The greenside bunkers were okay, but there many rocks and in one case an exposed rock face in the fairway bunkers. Tee boxes, the six we played, were level with average coverage. As we made the turn there were two foursomes on the tee for Presidio, neither of which was the foursome we had been playing behind. It was clear they were getting as many people out as they could, with little thought to routing play efficiently. When I went to the pro shop they looked around, called the first tee on Mission, and sent us out in front of the foursome that was waiting there. Mission was in much better shape, the greens seemed a little quicker and smoother, the fairways were well covered with the usual Heinz 57 mix of So Cal grass. Fairway bunkers were better, but still with some rocks. Other than just pumping as many folks as they could out, staff was pleasant and accommodating. I learned not to come here expecting a quick round on a Sunday, even as we finished, at 2:30 - only played 16 - there were foursomes waiting on the first tee of Mission.

Played as part of yesterday's GK Guru group here. It was a pleasure playing with Jim and Tim again and meeting Shane for the first time.

Upon arrival I was pretty surprised at how busy it was. There were a lot of people around the starter but he did a great job of getting everyone out. We teed off right on time. With the amount of people I saw I was a little worried that we would run a little late and take a little longer. But as the other guys alluded to the 3 some ahead of us held us back a little but we still finished right at 4:30 so all in all not too bad.

It was a little damp to start but dried out as the round progressed. Plenty of spots in the fairway to hit from. There are some sections you will see that are roped off due to new sodding which is nice to see the course addressing areas of need. There are some bad spots in the fairways but nothing drastic.

Rough is not too penalizing unless you hit it on the trolley tracks. There are some bare spots in the rough so its still a mixed bag there.

I have always thought the greens here were pretty good. They always seem to maintain a good pace to them and be relatively smooth considering the amount of play this course seems to get being in the middle of Mission Valley. From a looks standpoint the looked a little slow and seem a little longer than normal but they actually rolled faster than I was expecting. I was glad on the first hole that I wasn't the first to putt because think the other guys all rolled their putts well past the hole so I got the benefit of reading their putts. There were a few unrepaired ball marks but I think that was from the group of ahead of us.

Incredible deal to play. If you aren't a part of this GK Guru program you need to get writing some reviews because these deals are just too good to pass on.

Played the Mission and then Presidio tracks at this 27-hole course with three fellow GKers I hadn't played with before - nice guys all. We teed off on a Sunday at 7:22am, my earliest tee time in years. I live nearby and I'm a "green member" at Riverwalk, paying $50 a month for discounted tee times and free daily range balls. I managed to get there early enough to hit just a few off the grass at the range before our group was called. I like the putting green at Riverwalk, and the range is my favorite in San Diego - nicely designed and spacious with some inviting targets, and especially fun when the grass is open, which seems to be mainly Saturday and Sunday mornings. On the course, it was pretty damp out there for the first hour-plus on Mission -- seemed like heavy dew plus maybe overnight watering. Someone asked, only half joking, if it had rained the night before. I was toweling my club off after each shot, and occasionally my shoes. Otherwise, playing conditions were fine by me... tee boxes ideal, a few bare spots here and there but mostly nice grass coverage, and greens pretty consistently medium-speed. The rough was neither long nor penal. I found myself in bunkers maybe four times (ugh) and sand was fine in all but one (front-right green-side on Presidio hole #2). Regarding pace of play, we waited a couple minutes on a few holes, but never long enough to be a bother. At the halfway point, one of the ambassadors encouraged the group in front of us to play faster, so they did, which was nice. As usual I was happy with Riverwalk's staff, which got me out there quickly and smoothly for an enjoyable Sunday morning round.

Played Presidio/Mission this morning at 7:22 with fellow GK Gurus. After a bit of confusion at check-in, I hit a few of rudyclubs range balls (off grass today) and a couple putts (small, sloped practice green, no chipping). The course was wet with a few small puddles, but dried out later in the round. Tees: level with some divot damage on the par 3's but all very playable Fairways: some patched turf areas but good lies all around Rough: rough, mostly patchy with a variety of lies Bunkers: thin hard packed sand (seemingly the new norm at most courses these days), the ones I looked at or played from were smooth and raked Greens: signs of aeration past, but mostly just visual, some greens were a bit bumpy, rolling at medium/fast with bit of unsuspected roll out if you weren't careful, not soft, but accepted well struck shots leaving small ball marks (of which I only had to repair a few that weren't mine POP: just under 4.5 hours, the group ahead was two holes back after nine but picked it up slightly on the back (apparently they thought they were playing a major) Customer service: besides the confusion at the front desk, all was good. Walkability: very walkable, flat with most tee boxes close to the last green Layout: I always enjoy playing here with a variety of holes, a good solid test for all golfers Overall: a fun, centrally located course that is almost always in good playable shape *Not sure why my rating was so low, I would think closer to a 6

Going out early the fairway's were pretty soggy & wet. When the sun came out they dried up to play much better. Mostly green & lush with quite a few dry or dead areas mixed. Our group only found a couple all day. Mostly good lies and decent to hit from.
Was in one trap and it was pretty firm and the rest looked the same.
T's good and rough decent. Some shaggy areas & some hard pan areas.
Greens for the most part were very good. A few bumps & bounces, but not too bad. Ran decent at a little above medium. Mostly receptive.

Played the Presido / Mission combo today. I used the birthday deal and only paid $19 with a drink, good deal. Both courses are in good to real good shape. Things were nice and green from tee to green. Sand was damp but hey it rain over the last day or two. Greens were in great shape. Most rolled very well and no signs of recent punching. I was actuall really surprised at how good the conditions were. Now would be a good time to play.

Played here 9/16 after work (supposedly a 4pm tee time but apparently it never went through and the clubhouse had to "fit us in" at 4:15). The delay made absolutely no difference as the place was crowded with traffic avoiders and off we went at $29! for the Mission/Friars combo. We were only able to finish 11 actual holes of golf but it felt like far less between bad conditions and waiting. The review: Tee-boxes: Actually decent throughout with plenty of area to tee it up. Turf consistency was mixed but it wasn't terribly challenging to find a good spot. Fairways: Beat to hell in many places, being replaced in others. Plenty of fairway was simply roped off and that fairway that wasn't was brown, bumpy and finding a great lie was tough. Rough: OK condition, though anyone who has played here knows there's lots of areas to miss that simply end up being the adjacent hole's fairway. The out of bound areas can certainly be penal (think San Diego river) but the thick stuff is in good enough shape to penalize you. Sand: Pathetically enough this is the first round (if you can call 11 holes a round) in which I haven't found the sand! It looked good and raked though. Greens: Good shape and the highlight of the round! Slow speeds and marks everywhere but putts ran true. Some green complexes had some minor damage and the green skirts were beat up but from ball to cup, not bad. ETC: Staff was just okay today; clubhouse was fine, bartender great, starter was lackluster and overwhelmed. Carts have tablet-like GPS but works well, windshields are nonexistent though. Far too much traffic here with 3 functioning 9-hole options to allow fivesomes and 3 hour rounds per 9 holes. Would not recommend right now.
