Teed it up with fellow GK’ers at Oak Quarry for a GK Review Guru round. Super fun time on one of my very favorite tracks. This is a golf course that provides a complete, excellent golf experience every time. Bold, extremely unique layout carved into a rock quarry. Like nothing I’ve experienced anywhere else. Plus a signature par 3, hole #14 that is awe inspiring. A beautiful clubhouse and exceptional service. Thursday the golf course was in great shape. Tee to Green. Lush. Greens rolling mostly smooth, holding shots and at a good pace. Sand traps on the firm side but well raked and tended too. Given the current dry conditions in Southern California I was not expecting the course to be that green. I snapped a bunch of photos and posted them here so check it out for yourself. Our pace of play began sluggish but spend up considerably after the 3rd hole and we finished in 4 ½ hours. Before my round I got a breakfast burrito that was outstanding. After the round I sat down for lunch will other GK’ers and enjoyed the food, service and atmosphere tremendously. I know this is very glowing review by my standards but frankly its spot on. The course will be overseeding at the end of this month so get out and play it soon.

Played 10/6 with the GK Gurus, paired with Mr. GK himself, Vince and Kevin. Great company and an enjoyable day – would have been even better if my game had come with me to the course!

The course conditions were covered quite well by the others who played – I concur with their evaluations and would simply say the course was in the best shape of anywhere I’ve played in quite some time. I would also say the after round food was excellent (the porkbelly sliders are highly recommended!).

To me, what sets this course apart from most other daily play public courses is how each aspect combines with the next to provide a superior golf experience – much like a gourmet dish where each ingredients flavor and texture compliments and accentuates the next.

Start with conditions and service that are well above average. Next, add a good basic location, easily accessible to the vast majority of Southern California golfers. Mix in a good variety of short and long holes and some tough green complexes that challenge all aspects of your game (both physically and mentally). Sprinkle with a unique setting, then top it all off with some absolutely stunning visuals and what do you have?

Played 10-6-16 with Sixpez and Itslikeimsayin in a GK Guru outing teeing off a little after 8am and finishing in about 4 1/2 hours. Tee boxes were in good shape, mostly level and lush. Fairways were very lush and green with great lies and minimal roll out. Rough was in good shape along fairways, but a little thin around greens with some bare spots. Was in one fairway bunker that was nice and firm and in one greenside bunker that had a thin layer of sand but still not to bad to hit from. Greens were very soft rolling medium speed with some being a little bumpy, but most of that was do to poorly repaired pitch marks. Costumer service was very nice and friendly.

I played in the first gk guru time, teeing off just before 8. It was a great time playing with Kevin, Ron, and the boss (Johnny). Oak Quarry is probably as visually stunning as any course in Southern California, and it remains a tribute to the highest level of golf course architecture. To play golf surrounded by the steep walls of the quarry is always an amazing experience.

Playing conditions were very good. Tee boxes, fairways, and rough were lush. The greens were smooth and rolled at a nice speed, though reading the breaks could be tricky. Pace of play was good, though the wind definitely slowed us down. Customer service was exceptional. Everyone I came in contact with was attentive and professional.
A splendid time is guaranteed for all ...

Played in GK Guru Group with Johnny, Vince and Ron. Course is in great shape. Played the White tees at 6000 yards which was plenty for me since the winds picked up after the 7th hole. Course has some great short par 4's with some risk/reward in them. The par 3 14th hole maybe one of the best par 3's around. Can't really add to the conditions that Mark and Keith have already described. Golf carts are excellent with USB ports in them along with ball/club washer and cooler. Saw the beverage cart girl several times. Customer Service was excellent.

Great day with all the GK Gurus out at Oak Quarry. Beautiful morning that got much more interesting when the gusty Santa Ana winds kicked up! Thanks to the course and Johnny for setting up such a great deal on one of the best courses around. Agree with everything Mark says about the conditions. Fairways very lush and fluffy. Rough had great coverage and made you work a little in some places, but still not overly punitive. Greens soft and rolling at medium speeds. A little bumpy in places and some debris because of the winds. I was in a couple of fairway bunkers and they were on the firm side, which is good for fairway traps if you ask me. Unfortunately, the one greenside bunker I was in was about the same consistency with just a thin layer of sand on top of a pretty firm base. I usually get out here about once a year and this is the greenest/softest I've seen the course in several years. So great to see one of my SoCal favorites looking and playing so well. This is definitely one of the area's must-play tracks for its distinctive setting and fun layout. Look forward to my next visit!

Played out here today with a bunch of GK'ers in the GK Review Guru outing (8:04 tee time) and had a great time. The first few holes moved pretty slowly, but things picked up on No. 5 and pace was smooth the rest of the way. Total just about 4:30.

The course is in very nice condition. Greens were pretty soft and accepted shots well. They mostly rolled true and about medium/medium-fast speed, although a few were a tiny bit bumpy. I also had a difficult time reading these greens, perhaps over-reading breaks most of the day. Fairways are lush green with great coverage. Rough was pretty lush, too, but cut short and not very penal. Early in the morning everything was quite wet and didn't provide much roll, but the Santa Ana winds dried that out by mid-morning. I was in a couple bunkers and they were both good. Tee boxes were fine all day.

This was my second time playing the course. It's not only dramatically beautiful in spots, but also a lot of fun to play. Definitely one of the most highly recommended public courses in Southern California.

Was invited to play in a tournament here at Oak Quarry on 9/25 with an 8:00 am shotgun start. I have not been here is at least 12-15 years so I had forgotten everything about it but after reading the reviews on GK I was really looking forward to it. The tournament was played from the whites and was disappointed not to play the blues but soon discovered it was a better for us particularly not having played here in a long time. There is a significant difference between the two. As the previous reviewers indicated, this course is in very nice condition right now. Very impressive. Fairways were lush, greens rolled perfectly. Didn’t hit any sand traps but they looked damp and hard. It’s hard to come up with any negative comments about OQ. Quite a few elevation changes which makes you think through your shot. Don’t always need to hit driver. Fairways are pretty generous on most holes but hitting a really bad shot will get you in the rocks. The par 3 tee boxes are elevated and also makes you think about the right club to hit. Didn’t interact much with the course staff except the marshal who was out there cracking a few jokes. Nice folks in the restaurant and had a very good Ruben sandwich. All in all a great day. On a very warm day, the front 9 was great with no wind but we did get heavy Santa Ana winds on the back 9 - 20-35 mph gusts. Can’t knock the course for that however. I guess the only knock on this course is the price tag. Their web site says $95 on weekends prime time. We didn’t pay that for the tournament but they tell me to look around on line to get a decent rate for weekdays. I’ll be looking because I definitely want to come back and take on the blues!

Played Oak Quarry this afternoon. The course is in awesome shape. I was very impressed. The fairways were the best I have ever seen them here. The greens were a little slow but nothing major. The bunkers have really come around since the last time I played here. The most common complaint about this course seems to be the bunkers and it looks like they have listened. I was in a couple bunkers today and had no issues. It is a bit expensive but right now it is worth it. We teed off at about 1:30 and did not see another group until about the 13th hole. The wind picked up at the turn and made the back nine play much more difficult than the front. If you get the opportunity to get out to Oak Quarry, I promise you wont be disappointed.
