Played GK Event 6/14 (Group 3). As always another GREAT GK event. Both our son's first ever GK Event, and they thoroughly enjoyed their event, and certainly would've hung in there for the revelry afterwards if not for having to pick up the fur kid. Riverwalk is a wonderful 3 (9s) track inconspicuously hidden away adjacent to I-8, and the Mission/Fashion Valley Malls. Hard to believe they could fit 27 holes in the congested San Diego area -- that in itself is pretty Amazing. Ample parking, nice Pro Shop, Quaint bar area with outdoor patio seating overlooking one of the beautiful arched bridges, Holes 1 and 18 (Mission course). Separate snack shack over by Hole 1 (Persidio). Practice Driving range off grass, and adjacent large putting area with about 5-6 cups. Carts were equipped with GPS, and a cooler. Cart Lady was ever present and certainly made ample rounds to take care of everyone's beverage/snack attacks. Tee boxes were in pretty good shape from the amount of use they saw. I believe there were at least 3 golf tournaments going on this day. Starter was helpful with guidance on staying off the rough to allow them to fill in/entering/exiting via the white stakes/staying on fairways, and overall - a Pleasant start to our day's round. Seemed like our event had a slight delay in starting, which resulted in a 2 Group back-up on Hole 1, and a 3 group back up by time we reached Hole 2/Par 3. Our group decided to try and help move things along by waving Group 4 on up once we got on the green, and they in turn did the same for the next group that followed...not sure if the wave ups continued; but think it would be a good (Sign Post Recommendation) for this and other Par 3s throughout to help speed up POP. ??? Typically there were ample signs indicating distances, and drop zone locations, so that did assist in alleviating guesswork. Winds can/do play a part on this course from middle of the day on (cooling off in afternoon too). Fairways were in very good shape and I found them quite easy to hit off of, as well as the rough which held balls up nicely. Some brown out/minimal GUR spots, but with San Diego's water restrictions and drought conditions, you can't fault the course. Bunkers (I got in 1) were full of thick, fluffy, sand... which was Nice to see in one respect (i.e. quality sand in bunkers); however, resulted in a little difficulty getting out after realizing first full swing went under the ball more than usual = resulting in 2nd shot (lesson learned) to effectively get out. Still frustrating to see bunkers not properly raked from the days earlier players; and divots/ball marks on greens (I know I fixed at least 3 or more per hole). I liked the fairways, I liked the rough, and I was impressed with the condition of the greens for mid-day/late afternoon rounds. Greens were quite fast both uphill and down. Rolled fairly true, a little bumpy (again due to the day's prior rounds/afternoon's growth). Managing speed and the subtle undulations was critical for sure. Pace of Play we thought was a tidge slower than normal; but once you got around the slower Par 3 holes, it seemed to improve a bit. Proximity of greens/tees/fairways did result in several criss-cross, duck-duck Fouuurrr close calls on a couple occasions. Overall Very Happy with Riverwalk course and its Staff. We were only a little dismayed at the options for food items to order in the clubhouse upon finishing our round as we were quite hungry and food items were minimal bar type small portioned (albeit Great tasting) foods (i.e. $8 for 2 little sliders with no fries). :( Also, seemed a little under staffed to handle all the mini-food orders. My hats off to the young lady working the bar and trying to quell everyone's ravenous appetites and food/drink orders. May have been because it was a Sunday afternoon??? If I were to make any recommendations for improvement it would certainly be to ensure enough staff were on hand to handle tournaments and a menu not as restrictive as bar snacks. In Summary: For anyone on the fence...grab that Great Greenskeeper coupon deal and Go Play! I for one (our group) truly enjoyed this course and fellowship of GKrs). Riverwalk does seem to get quite busy/crowded, but they have a handle on managing #s to 9's quite well. Would I play here again? Absolutely!! Just this Novice Golfin Gals two tee's worth. ;)

Played the Mission/Presido combo as part of the GK event. First time playing here and I will give you my impressions.

* I think this is a nice little muni track for locals.
* Most amazingly fluffy sand I have ever played out of..honestly it might have been TOO fluffy!
* Fairways were "okay" at best....pretty patchy and could use some attention.
* Greens were very good, probably the best feature on the course hole to hole.
* Layout is okay...one signature hole I thought. #2 on Mission (our 2nd 9) was a very nice looking hole and my slight fade fit it perfectly.
*GPS was good, though surprised when all of a sudden we had music coming out of it for a moment with about 3-4 holes left to play.

If I were in the area I would definitely give it a look...would love to play all 27 in a single shot.

GK Events are a blast and this one was no exception.

Played in the event yesterday and I went in thinking the course was going to be in bad shape due to my friends who had voiced their displeasure of the course. I was surprised the fairways were in decent shape and the greens were good. I enjoyed the course other than the wind but he thats weather, no controlling that. For the right price i would play this course again as long as i was in the San Diego area.

Fairways and rough a bit spotty and inconsistent, but I almost always had decent lies. Sounds like they are ultimately trying to transition everything over to bermuda throughout, so that takes some time and patience.

Either way, it was another fun GK event and it's hard not to enjoy yourself when surrounded with GK'ers! Thanks to Johnny for organizing everything and to the course for having us. Special thanks for setting me up with a rental set at the last minute, especially the putter that I never really felt comfortable with but I was somehow draining putts left and right : )

Just wanted to expand a little on the other 2 reviews a bit. I thought the greens were much better than when I played a couple of weeks ago and I thought the speed was faster than they looked.

I was in quite a few bunkers and the greenside bunkers were white soft sand while the fairway bunkers were darker firmer sand. The fairway bunkers were like hitting out of cat litter which isn't bad since it's easier to hit from. Greenside bunkers could use a good raking.

Pace was a little slow to start and the par 3 2nd it always seems to backup. Probably about hole 9 seems to be when things got moving. Otherwise I think the other reviews are spot on.

I was in one bunker and it was fantastic – filled with good quality, heavy sand. Rough was pretty good condition throughout. And the fairways were by far the weak link, but wildly inconsistent from one spot to the next. Some good areas could be ranked a 10, and other spots not 15 feet away could be rated a zero. Therefore, I split the difference and gave them a 5.

Another great GK event today, thanks again Johnny for setting these things up . . . good golf or bad it's always enjoyable playing with fellow GKers on any course!

The green complexes were in very good shape, bunkers nice, green side rough fairly thick and consistent, greens running smooth and fairly fast, a bit of bounce on approaches, but not too bad. Fairway bunkers were in good shape, rough pretty consistent with a few thin spots. Fairways were the most inconsistent part of the course with varying grasses, a couple bare/thin spots, some turf patches, etc. Only found good lies, but aesthetically the fairways seemed a bit on the rough side. Customer service was great as always here. POP was just around 5 hours which is about the norm on a Sunday afternoon.

I'll be back . . . the course is 10 minutes from the house and offers a good value.

Played in a tournament on Friday and pace was pretty brutal. We were at 6 hours and went in and we had one hole left to play.

Played the mission/presido combo and the overall course is in ok shape. There is quite a bit of bad areas in the fairways but some are still pretty decent.

Greens were better. They have some good roll to them but probably rolled around a medium pace. You get in these tournament with people that never play and they don't fix their ball marks. Generally greens are pretty flat, there is no crazy undulations here. You can probably just aim at the hole and get away with it.

Rough is not penalizing at all. They might be a little thicker around the greens but still not too bad.

Because it was a tournament we weren't in a bunker and I don't remember retrieving one either but they seemed to have decent sand coverage.

Wind can be a little tricky out here because of the valley so club selection does become an issue. It's not unheard of to be 2 clubs more or less.

So I played Riverwalk previously (before the drought became so bad) and it was a fun course with great conditions. Its still a fun course.... the conditions....well lets say the fairways have suffered the most. Lots of brown spots which are ok, but with the drought the divots haven't healed as well and there are patches of different grass all over the fairways. The tee boxes weren't as even as I remembered, but the greens were still in great condition for the most part. One major note for this course if you aren't an SD resident, BOOK ONLINE! I called and they quoted me $99(Which would NOT be worth it for these conditions right now) and they told me I could find cheaper online, so I found it online at $67 and I used the GK code for another 10% off! I finished in less than 4 hours which was amazing though....
