Played in a tournament here on Sunday, May 6. Although there have been quite a few reviews lately for this course, I had to write because I enjoyed the conditions so much. A+ all around. Well, except for the rattlesnake on near the 4th hole.

The highlights for me were the greens and fairways. The fairways were fairly tight around the greens but otherwise very nice hitting surface. The greens were great. Some sign of a recent verticut but they rolled true and were decently fast. There were some low scores in our tourney and I attribute it to the greens. They were a pleasure. It used to be that this course got high rating for everything but the greens which were said to be slower than other courses. That apparently has changed for the better.

The bunkers were okay. I was in one greenside one that had a good amount of sand. I was in two fairway bunkers that were overly wet and like hitting off hard pan. So, maybe not A+ on the sand.

The cart lady came around at least three times. The service in the bar was good. It was a nice day at one most scenic inland courses I know in Southern California.

Played 5-2-18 with GK Gurus Nick, Steve, and David teeing off around 7:40 and finishing in about 4 1/2 hours. Tee boxes were in real nice shape, mostly level and lush with minimal damage on par threes. Fairways were in real nice shape semi-lush with nice lies. Rough was in good shape, not to long but very healthy and thick. Was in two fairway bunkers both of which were a little thin and firm, and one greenside bunker which was a little firm but descent to hit from. Greens were in really good shape rolling smooth, holding shots, and little on the quick side. Overall course is in real good shape and definitely worth playing.

Great day despite the unseasonably wet chilly weather on 5/3. Joined by 7 other GK Gurus and got to play my GK Cup 11 match on such an inspiring golf course. Was loving it. Thanks everyone for coming out reading this.

Before visiting Oak Quarry, I was little spoiled by playing some super lush desert golf and a round last week at Sandpiper in Santa Barbara. So my bar was set pretty high. Well, I was impressed to so say the least. To be honest with you, I’ve never seen the fairways in better shape and with all this warm weather now those berumnda fairways are going to be even more lush in weeks to come. Despite the greens being damp, they sure ran smooth and deceptively fast. Rough was mostly lush and there where areas that were very lush and thick making it tough to escape. Tee boxes were lush, big, some needing a to be more level (we played the white tees) but all in very good shape. The only knock with the playing conditions was the bunkers. Firm and thin. With the wet weather, this made matters even worse as I noticed many do not drain well. Besides the bunkers, the rest of the course drained fantastic.

The layout, well, as I always say, is a bold statement in all facets. Just take a look at the photos. I can’t describe it any better. It’s a bucket list course for sure.

I was disappointed although that the driving range was closed due to the rain. I was told it’s because it gets very muddy making it very difficult to retrieve the balls. I could have used a few balls to warm up with. My suggestion is they need to get some hitting nets out there when there is rain.

I drove out from Thousands Oaks. Was an easy drive as was the drive home because I left early to beat the traffic and finished the round early enough to beat the traffic back.

Overall great golf experience I’m looking forward to hopefully having again soon!

Played with the GK Gurus at 7:40am on Wednesday, May 2nd. It had rained the day/night before and was still misting on us as we played the front nine, so everything was pretty wet, and I didn’t rate the course for that reason. Still, OQ is my favorite course in SoCal and I enjoyed the round with Nick, Ron, and Steve (who absolutely pounded the ball all day!). The course recently came out of aeration and is in very good condition, with a clean, groomed look throughout. It looks like a lot of the incidental vegetation and grasses that were previously found around the course (especially near greens) have been cleaned up, freeing up additional sightlines and contributing to the sleek look. (As an example, vegetation behind the first green has been removed – the viewline into the green is now more like an “infinity pool” view from the fairway, with nothing behind the green except sky, and that messes with your depth perception and club choice.) Greens still showed evidence of shallow fine verticutting; combined with the rain therefore were soft and receptive. They rolled much quicker than they looked, with only scattered instances of bumpiness. Tees were fine, set up very close to the Blue plates. I’ve frequently seen the Blue markers here moved well forward on the par-3 holes – from the plates, these par-3 holes present stiff challenges with long carries over canyons and quarry lakes. Rough was wet but generally very playable. The lakes on 10/11, 12, and 13 are dry and, while staked, are easily played as rough. Sand was understandably wet and packed from the rain. Sand quantity looked adequate in all cases – we encountered firm/packed sand, areas of soupy mushiness, and some bunker bottoms with standing water. Thanks to Johnny for setting this up. Finally got a chance to meet GK legend 24hourgolf. Shop and grill were very quiet on this early rainy morning - EXCELLENT breakfast burrito available. Snack shack at the turn was closed this morning - when that's the case, the course needs to put a water jug out there for those of us who drink a lot of water. Otherwise, no water from #7 tee to #16 tee! A divot mix refill rack would also be welcome there. Always recommended.

This COURSE is elite IMO, love the layout/design, the conditions and the iconic quarry views.

However, disappointed by the overall 'feel' of the property/pro shop etc. Seems like things are at the beginning stages of slow deterioration, not being kept at a high quality as the course deserves. Also, wasn't pleased the range was closed on a cold morning where 'warming up' was at a premium. Asked the head pro who hemmed about 'reasons' why a range shuts down but no real excuse since none of what he mentioned was going on. It's a critical part of playing golf as well as being part of what you pay for with your tee time, so shabby decision IMO.

To the course, it's easy: this place is about as good as it gets. Bunkers were wet and hard, as expected with the weather, but otherwise, it's just consistently one of the best courses I EVER play. Loved every second of it. Perfect tees, perfect fairways, perfect greens, relatively speaking.

Just hope my concerns about where this property could be headed is wrong, and this place remains in top condition, because it's one of the best around, especially for the low rates. All things being equal, this is a must play IMO.

PS. From another review looks like we just missed some of the regs around here, gonna have to meet a few of you one of these days.

Played yesterday in the Guru outing, spectator to the GK Cup match between Andrew1 and JohnnyGK.

Things were still wet from the overnight rain, continued to drizzle for the first few holes. Several bunkers had puddles and there were a few casual water spots in some of the fairways but in general, the course held up VERY well. Bunkers were really heavy due to the water, best just to avoid them (good idea but bad execution on my part). Greens rolled very smooth and true, surprisingly quick for how wet they were, no surprise they held all kinds of shots as damp as they were. Rough varied from not too long to "Woa!", all of it was quite thick – if your ball sat down it was tough to get out.

POP was right about 4:30 which was pretty good everything considered. Give the course a couple days to dry out and a few days of sun and it should be in excellent shape. Recommended.

OQ remains my favorite SoCal layout. Just a really fun and challenging course, and set in a great location. OQ feels like Eagle Glen with greater peril, or Hidden Valley with less elevation & trickery. I like all 3 of these courses, but OQ is just a step above the other two.

Starting with the bad, I'll echo the other Gurus in stating that the bunkers left something to be desired today. The rain certainly didn't help - so I am going to blame Mother Nature some here. Rain tracks in the sand made for bad lies. Even with the rain, the bunkers did not have a lot of sand before you hit bottom. But, I will say I've seen a lot worse than these bunkers. They are playable, and they are punishing.

Greens were solid today. Soft, smooth, and pretty quick. Nothing that can't be handled by a red-hot $8 thrift store putter though. :)

Tees - excellent. Fairways - very good grass overage, lies still a little tight for my liking, let it grow a bit more.

Rough is a challenge. You have areas with very thick grass, and just a few yards away from areas with very little grass. Sometimes you get away with being in the rough, and sometimes you don't. The thickest rough is the first 10 feet of the fairway, so you just miss the fairway a bit and you are hacking from the thick stuff.

Thoroughly enjoyed OQ in the mist!

Played the Blues (6600/72.0/133) with Dconnally, RGM2525 and Sparky14 in 4.5H. The weather was drizzling for the front 9, drying up for the back 9, around 60 and fairly calm. Thanks to Dave, Ron & Steve for a fun round! Alot of experience in the 2 GK Guru groups today, literally thousands of prior reviews posted by the 8 players playing today. Enjoyed finally getting to meet 24hourgolf after reading his reviews for years! My first round here since 2009. Challenging layout up/down rolling hills with large, undulating green complexes and several holes that feature great elevation changes. The tees were well maintained. I had no challenges finding a level lie on all holes. The fairways were good to play from. A few browned out areas, but I always had a good cushion from shots in the fairway. The primary rough is not overly tall but just tall enough so that the ball usually sat down. No challenges finding balls unless you got to the native areas. The sand traps were not very good. Tough to tell how much of it was today's rain, but numerous traps on the front had standing water in them. The rest ranged from casual water, to muddy all the way to thin. The large poa greens had a light vericutt that did not affect play. They were deceptively quick considering we played 9 in a light rain and they were just drying out as we were finishing. They held irons well and were consistent from green to green. Better have you "A" lag putting game for these greens! No drink cart out today and there are only a few water stations on the course. The carts have good GPS. Would be a very difficult course to walk with all the hills. Very fun course to play with lots of forced carries. Definitely recommended.
