Con: sand is still average at best. A local guy said it's because the wind gets so crazy it blows all the good sand away.

I think the new layout makes so much more sense. The 18th par 5 is BRUTAL. Such a tough finishing hole.

Just a great time out at Oak Quarry Golf Club with fellow GK Gurus on Monday. The golf course is in the best shape I’ve ever seen it with exception of the bunkers. It’s my understanding a project to improve the sand quality in the bunkers has already begun. I was also told by the golf course, and witnessed it on the second hole, tee boxes that have become not level are being leveled and sodded. Speaking of the second hole, it was the former 18th hole. Oak Quarry has reverted to the original design of having the first hole the previous 17th hole and the second hole the previous 18th hole and finishing on the previous 16th hole now the 18th hole. So the layout is a par 35 on the front nine and par 37 on the back nine. Solid improvement. I’ve updated the scorecard and scoretracker here on Greenskeeper.org.

Staff was very friendly and professional all day. Our pace of play was excellent teeing off at 8:00am on a Monday and finishing in just over 4 hours. It’s a very challenging scenic track with some extended cart rides to the next tee boxes.

Patio dining was open and the view of the golf course from the patio is spectacular.

It’s definitely a bucket list golf course given how unique it is to have been built in an old rock quarry but more so for its fantastic fun layout. The 16th hole Par 3 is simply a must experience for any golfer. Check out some recent photos I just posted. Highly recommended.

Played 5-3-21 with GKGurus, Greg, Steve, and John teeing off around 8am and finishing in about 4 1/2 hours with no waiting and nobody pushing us from behind. Most of the tee boxes were in decent shape with a few having some bare spots and a few being a little un-level. Fairways were in great condition, very green and lush with great lies and decent roll out. Rough was very nice condition and thick, 2-3 inches in most places and very lush. Was in two fairway bunkers that were either hardpan or muddy with a lot of small rocks in them. Was not in any greenside bunkers but most of them looked very firm and some had some weeds growing in them. Greens were in pretty good shape, rolling mostly smooth, at medium pace and holding shots very nice. Overall course is in really good condition right now with the exception of the bunkers.

Played Monday may 3rd at 8:10 with David, Nick, & Gray of the Gk guru and had a good time. Thanks to Johnny for setting this up. I probably live the closest to this course and never play it as my friends live in orange county and don't want to make the drive. This is the first time I have played here with the new hole numbers and I must say it is a vast improvement, nice relaxing first tee shot and 2nd shot before you get to some of the tricky carry and elevation holes. The previous reviews pretty much hit the nail on the head for conditions. Fairways real nice and greens were holding iron shots with small ball marks to repair. Some of the fairways are very generous with just a few being tight. There are many holes where you have to think about what club you hit from the tee and play to your strength on your approach shot. Interesting course when a par 3 is the #1 handicap hole. The wind did come up and did make a few holes tricky. Thanks again Johnny

Joined the GK Gurus Monday, 5/3/21 at 8:10am on a warm, blustery day. Thanks to Nick, Gary, and Keith for an enjoyable round, and to Johnny for setting up this outing. OQ is my favorite course in SoCal and the course was in good condition. The earlier reviews hit most of the high points – fairways and greens were good, rough was a variable length around the course, tees were OK. I was impressed with the firm greens.

I’m of a different mind from some other reviewers regarding the quality of sand in the bunkers, which has been an ongoing issue in the past, as evidenced in earlier reviews the past few years. Although many bunkers were a little damp and firm this morning, all that I visited had good sand quantity and played just fine with a lift/smooth/place approach (no rakes yet). We did see some standing water in a couple of bunkers this early in the morning after watering.

Nice interactive GPS on the comfortable carts – with some blind shots on some holes, it would help if the screen would show other carts ahead of your position. There was divot refill mix on the carts which I use liberally – it would be useful to have a refill rack at the snack shack after hole #11. New hole layout makes for a tougher finishing stretch of holes.

Always recommended.

5/3 guru outing on a warm and windy day POP 430 with a few errant shots and tricky greens to account for the time. Played the whites with Nick Keith and David enjoyable group.
Fairways have good cover with some thin areas but provided acceptable lies. Rough provided a challenge being rather sticky and difficult especially on the side hills or for the inevitable short sided chip. Tees had some rough areas with some divots and uneven spots requiring attention to tee placement.
Bunkers are mostly neglected with firm wet hard packed sand with some attempts at grooming which only left clumpy areas after drying out and most contained smallish rocks as well. My 1st thought was why would a course of this quality have such poor quality bunkers? My take is that with covid this is not the time to renovate the traps as that would require more labor to keep them groomed only have them trashed every day. I imagine that upgrading the bunkers will be a priority as restrictions are lifted.
Greens are really nice firm on chips but holding well struck approach shots. Rolling medium fast mostly smooth and requiring full attention on all the putts as breaks were affected by undulation and topography.
Nice newer carts very comfortable with GPS giving distance to pins. Friendly staff.

This was only my 2nd time playing this course and I enjoyed even more than my first time playing it.

As the previous 2 reviews by Steve and Nick were right on with their insights to the conditions. I really don't have much more to add. Bunkers not that great, fairways were awesome and rough was thick and penal. The greens ran very nice and down hill putts could get away from you.

I really like how they are using the old 17 and 18 as holes 1-2, Makes they layout way better, ending with a nice par 5 and not the shorter old hole 18. Just a way better finishing hole and the new hole 1 is just a better starting hole. Most likely you GPS will be screwy because most companies have not updated their software to reflect the new routing.

I found that everybody that I came in contact with that works at OQ to be very friendly and that just adds to the enjoyment of this course.

Get out and play "The Rock" you will be glad you did.

Rode the Blues (6600/71.8/131) in 4H, 45M. Played with guru's Keith, David and Gary. A little breezy and overcast, very nice golf weather. Thanks to John for coordinating and Oak Quarry for having the guru's out. Tees were a work in progress on numerous holes. Transplanting ongoing. Numerous wear areas, they were just okay. Fairways very good, almost always had a decent lie with a decent cushion underneath. Rough excellent. Lush, thick and deep enough that you often need to be near you ball to see it. Traps were very mediocre. Many thin areas, some had standing water and a few very good areas here and there. Large greens were excellent. Rolling medium fast, they held irons well. They putted smooth and were very consistent from green to green. Customer service very good from all encountered. Plush carts with the Shark Experience GPS. No drink cart, but snack stand open on the course. Good, all grass range with nice warm-up area. Very good and playable design that I like better the more I see it. Highly recommended.
