Played today in very chilly conditions at the start but warmed up after front 9. Its winter and cold and the course is showing it. Best part of the course presently are the greens. In very nice shape and they will hold shots and release shots but any low flyers will send you off the green. They have some good speed especially from above the hole. Tee boxes are good but need cutting. Sand traps have all new sand but players are not raking and many of them need turning as they are becoming hard. Fairways have become very dormant with many bare areas and thin lies. Rough is dormant as well but able to find your ball and advance not a problem. The customer service is and continues to be excellent from all employees encountered.

Played on Sunday with a morning tee time. First time playing here and had fun at this course. Most of the conditions are the same as the last review. Found the course to be pretty wet. Tee boxes were ok, white tees were moved up. Fairways were ok and had some spotty issues but mostly playable. No real rough to deal with throughout the course. Sand was good and played well. Greens were rock hard and semi-fast. Petty bumpy and the collars were a mess. Rolled ok but didn’t hold shots. The do have a full size range with regular yellow range balls. Small practice green which didn’t match the course. Was surprised with the amount of elevation changes and probably not a walking course!!!


Overall had fun interesting layout but would have like the conditions to be a little better.

Played 1/19. Course is not in the best shape right now. The fires and weather have taken some toll. The fairways are the biggest issue with several being in pretty bad shape. Lots of dry spots, some very thin lies and areas of mixed grasses. Greens were in pretty good shape and the tee boxes were OK. I love this place and still worth playing but will need a little time to get back to top form.

Managed to avoid Whittier Narrows my entire life because of the perception that it's not a very nice golf course... and it turns out it was exactly how I thought it'd be. Was out Saturday 1/18 at 9:54 walking the blues. We were doing the River/Pine routing and the first tee had a two group back up. Slow play continued for most of the front, with at least a one group wait on every box. Things did manage to open up after the turn but they let fivesomes out there so prepare for a slow day.

In fairness, the conditions themselves might have been a little better than I anticipated as I did enjoy the layout and the challenge (course has some length and if you're out of position in the trees just take your medicine), but the conditions certainly weren't great. Tee boxes were mostly level however there were a few where you'd be off balance. Fairways were mostly good with some roll out with decent lies but once you ventured off a little lies got a lot more dicey. Lots of bare spots for sure.

One highlight was how nice the greens were. Even the area around the green was nice to putt or chip from. Honestly can make up for a lot of other shortcomings as the greens (while not very large) were mostly free of pitch marks and rolled at a medium-fast pace and true. I was in a couple of bunkers and was surprised they had plenty of sand as well.

Truly feel like this place has potential and I'd play here again but would stop short of recommending it or making it a top choice.

Played 1/18/25 10:30 POP 4:45. Course was in overall decent shape. Fairways had mostly full coverage with an occasional bare spot mixed around. They were a mixture of dormant grass & green grass. A little more dormant then green and both cut very tight. They played fine with good roll out. Good ball striking very important. Greens were in good shape. A little bumpy and on the slow side. Mostly receptive. A few had repaired areas. Traps in good shape. They have added free track man to each station on the driving range which is kind of cool. But with the reduced flight golf balls, not 100% accurate, but still fun. Golf carts very nice with Active GPS. Saw the cart girl twice.
Rate a little on the steep side for the current conditions, but still a recommend.

1/18/25 - 9:12 Tee Time. 3 groups ahead on the first tee box at 9:12 so not a great start. The starter was friendly and apologized due to a corporate group being slow off the first tee. Get to the second hole. 3 groups on the tee! Copy and Paste for the next 5 holes! Just brutal POP. 3hr front nine and 2:30 back nine. It's just unacceptable for a place with $177 green fees. OK RANT OVER

Conditions were pretty good overall. I had not played here since COVID and them doubling their green fee's from the $90 range to the 170-190 (dynamic price). Fairways were Bermuda dormant but played really nice. The Rough was an emerald green rye grass cut to about 1-2 inchs. Sand has always been a problem here but a few of the traps had very soft sand so maybe they are Finally figuring out that people want sand in the traps. The horseshoe trap around hole 6 still has very little sand. Greens were very nice, a touch on the firm side but held most shots and allowed spin. They rolled at a medium pace and were smooth.

Nice carts with GPS and speakers. No Beverage cart but the original halfway house (now on 12 after the layout change) Was open and the waitress was very friendly. IMO it's worth a play once in your life but for $177 and a 5+hr POP I will not be returning anytime soon unless a great deal is found.

Sunday, tee time 9:10am. Teed off a couple minutes behind schedule, no big deal. POP was right at 2hrs, perfectly acceptable out here. We waited just about every shot, but nothing horrendous.

Tee boxes were pretty beat up, but this place gets a lot of play, so that's understandable. Still found some decent spot for the tee, just took a minute to find it.

Fairways were pretty nice. No complaints.

Didn't find a bunker, but they looked just fine. They were having a kids Jr. league tournament right behind us so you could tell the grounds crew put a little extra effort in this morning, in fact they were still out there tidying up a few things last minute.

Greens were pretty darn good. They had them rolling smooth and they were very quick downhill and took the break a little more extreme than normal. I had a 4putt! They held shots perfectly.

No frills customer service, no problem. $23 to walk, resident rate is just fine. It's fun to play every once in awhile, especially if you don't want to spend most of the day devoted to a round of golf.

Always recommend, especially with new or novice golfers.

Played Sunday, 1/12, as the last day of a five day golf trip. I had not intended to play the fifth day but the group needed my participation and I really like Poppy Hills. I am glad I played. My back held up and I had a great time. The reason the group needed me was the cost. They charge $350 for public, $120 for NCGA members and $170 for guests. As a SCGA member I would have been entitled to the guest price but could not bring guests at that price. I and another player joined the NCGA for $99 and the other four players got in at the guest rate. My threesome was joined by a single who was a great player; it was fun watching him negotiate the course.

The course was in excellent condition. As usual, close but not quite as premium as the Pebble Beach Co. courses. A very worthy course though to play on a Pebble Beach trip. I really like the layout. It requires you to use every club in the bag. The greens were great. Not as fast as I have seen them but rolling true. The fairways were very good also. Winter tight but good hitting surfaces. Not much rough. I hit through the first fairway and it stopped in a one foot square area of rough. That was the only rough I remember being in. The sand in the traps was nice. The tee boxes were very good as well.

The course was every bit as enjoyable as I recalled from my last time here. Playing through the Del Monte Forest is just not the type of exerience we get in Southern California. Can't wait to get back.

Played January 9 in a noon shotgun, starting on hole #9. The course reopened to 18 hole play on December 6 so I was curious in how it would be. I played the course probably 15 years ago (or more) and did not remember much. Friendly service throughout.

The course is in really nice condition. They charge a premium price ($445 I believe) and it looked the part. I was playing poorly and it was a tough course for me. The greens were more contoured than I remembered and fast besides. The course also played long with not much roll out on drives. A couple of holes my drive popped out of the divot and stopped. I found the greens to be firm. They rolled great. The sand was thick and soft making it tough to control distance or to make a delicate shot. The rough was up also so we spent some time looking for balls and not finding all of them.

I will enjoy going back there once my game is in better order. it is a beautiful course and they did a great job on the renovation. I look forward to going again.

Played Thursday, 1/16, in a Weekday Team Play match. Excellent service at all levels although we only saw the drink cart once in our round. POP was lousy, at least five hours. My match went all 18 holes so that may have contributed to the slow pace.

The course was in good shape for January. I was in a couple of bare spots in the fairways. The rough was cut low in most spots but there were a couple of places we had to look for balls. The sand traps on the front nine were lousy, wet dirt. The greens were really good.Fast and true. Not quite as fast as the practice green but very nice speed. We were playing the white plates and they were not the best spots on the tee boxes. Overall, good condition and the greens were worth the price of admission.

Its been years since I last played here but I hope to get back soon.

Tee boxes are the worst offenders. On most tee boxes you won't get grass under your feet and the ball at the same time. Mostly, it is just sand coverage. Fairways are a little better, but there are still large areas of many fairways that are just sand.

Greens are pretty good, couple of rough spots here or there, but nothing really troublesome. Sand traps were real nice.

Course was busy, and pace was 4:45. Started out quick through 8, then slowed for the back 9.

Can't recommend Strawberry at the price they are asking. Hopefully this is just a winter condition, and the grass will fill in for spring. I think the fairways will be good, but those tee boxes have a long way to go.

Monday 1/13 at The Saticoy Club was our 58th Private Course Outing since I started these events in Southern California in 2021. For The Saticoy Club, it was their 9th time hosting our group and we can’t appreciate them enough. It’s a spectacular, challenging, beautiful LPGA Tour golf course. The event service, facilities and food are excellent. Every year we pick a special course to host our Day After The Masters Event, this year, as in previous years, it will be at The Saticoy Club.

Conditions on Monday were superb given our current 6+ months drought and November’s “Mountain Fire” that burned right up to edge of the course. Greens were fast and smooth. Fairways provided full dormant bermunda grass coverage. The lies were a little tight but consistent with good roll out. The primary rough had full coverage, mostly dormant but still challenging. Tee boxes were in great shape, we played the blue tees, lush, tight, some divot damage so not pristine, but solid.

We’ve played the Saticoy Club mostly on perfect weather days, once in the fog, some windy days but never with 20 to 40 mph winds. Once out on the course, I was happy to find many holes on the course protected by hillsides and large trees from the strong winds.

I highly recommend playing or joining this “players” club. Try not to ever miss an opportunity to experience an invite or event here. Check out the photos I posted.
