Lucky enough to get to spend another day with the GK/Vivid team this time at Sunset Hills CC in Moorpark. I had never played this course before so I was super excited to get to tee it up from the black tees with my old friends Kevin (kviser) and Andrew (ag2000), along with my buddy Brad. We were also very fortunate to get to play the course in its proper sequence as we were team 1A so it was 1-18 in this shotgun start.

In terms of layout, the front nine is incredibly fun with some gorgeous holes and a fun but not incredibly daunting routing. It's not a long course by any means so it gives you lots of chances to score. The course's main defense is its narrow chutes and landing areas, some blind shots and very fast greens. The back nine is a little more wild with some quirky holes that feel quite alien to the front nine, but it rounds out nicely the last three holes and the finishing hole is a fun one to end your day.

Course conditions? Pretty darn immaculate. Some of the early holes feel like you're up in the mountains just surrounded by lush greenery and such pleasant scenery all around. The golf is almost secondary! But yes, the fairways were just an absolute pleasure to play, and the rough got really grabby and thick in most areas - avoid at all costs! I played out of two bunkers and the sand was very nice and easy to hit from, while all the tee boxes were in good condition.

The greens were really terrific as well ... nothing gimmicky or over the top, but you're definitely going to find some solid breaks and multiple tiers to challenge you on many of them. Others can be quite small and well guarded by bunkers. But once you're on, putting adventures take center stage and you will be rewarded with confident lines, fast speeds and surfaces that are surprisingly good at holding well-struck pitches and chips. In a word - fabulous.

The warmup facilities were modest at best - only part that was open was about three or four stalls at a max distance of 150 yards, but the putting areas were very good. We had cart service come by multiple times so that was great, and other facilities were very well appointed and taken care of - clearly they go out of their way to make this place as good as it can be. And it shows.

Really enjoyed my afternoon at Sunset Hills and very happy to knock off another great local course off the list. Won't think twice if I ever get the opportunity to play here again.

I played here a couple of days ago on July 26. We had an 8:50 tee and I showed up early enough to hit some balls. The first thing I noticed was that the pro shop and restaurant were boarded up with plywood. Apparently some homeless jerk had made a habit of breaking in and vandalizing the premises. I heard that he was eventually caught. Nonetheless business continued as usual. The city of Los Angeles could do a little revamping of these facilities. This is an old golf course and it looks neglected. On the other hand, the course itself is in decent condition. The golf carts are set up with Bluetooth speakers and GPS.

The greens were just okay. Many of the old hole plugs on the front nine (first six holes?) were left too high and the mower had scalped them. Hopefully the greenskeeper who was responsible for these holes has learned his/her lesson. Other than that the rest of the greens were fine. Medium speed and mostly smooth roll.

Fairways, rough, and tees were in typical muni conditions. A little scruffy here and there but mostly decent lies. No real issues throughout the course.

All said, I would play here again.

Good times yesterday at the GK/GolfMoose/Vivid event. Sunset Hills is a beautiful and well maintained private course. Great customer service from the many staff members. The course was very lush and the greens were in great shape. The fairways and rough were mostly a thick mat of kikuyu. It can be tough to find your ball in some of the heavier areas of rough and even tougher to advance it so hitting the fairway is a plus. Pace of play for our group was 4:40 without too much waiting between shots. I found the course to be very challenging and fun. I would play here again.

Rode the blacks today 7/27/26 under hot conditions around 90 degrees with maybe a 5mph wind joined by buddies John, Matt and Matt. Pop was just a tick under 5 hours with about 90-100 players for the Golfmoose event. Staff treated us well. Bar open, cartgirl making her rounds. Only drawback to their practice area is short irons only. Otherwise beautiful 2 putting greens.

Conditions were very lush out there today!

Kikuya lush Fairways that were thick and if u come in too steep on these beauties it could be chunk city. Many fairways here are narrow. Rating these beauties a 8.5/10

Rough was lush Kikuya and even though I had a great chipping day the rough greenside is super lush, nasty. Rated 8.5/10

Tees were mostly level and were lush and nicely padded. 8/10

Was only in one bunker greenside #4 that looked wet and packed on the top surface but had plenty of sand underneath. Rated 7.5/10

The greens were very pure and seemed to look fast to the naked eye but were actually very soft and maybe rolling a 10 on the stimp. They are doing a great job watering them with this heat. Rated 8/10.

Sunset Hills presents small to midsized fairways off the tee with approach shots into smaller greens. Accuracy and ball positioning in the fairway is better than bombing it up greenside on some of the shorter par 4s

Our group thought the conditions were great. Thx Johnny, Golfmoose and Sunset Hills for a great day.

Played an early 6:20am Sunday tee time, in a surprise light rain that was a nice change from the recent heat and humidity. Our twosome was paired with a very pleasant single that was visiting from Denver.

It was my first time playing The Vineyard in about 20 years, so I was surprised that it looks like they flipped the nines. Not sure if I liked that decision, because I really like the stretch of holes that are now 6 thru 9, but I got to admit that 18 is probably a more dramatic finish. Course was in generally good shape, with decent tee boxes and medium-fast receptive greens. The fairway is cut pretty tight and a little bare in some spots. The worst part of the course was the bunkers. The light rain on the first few holes really gave the bunkers a packed mud consistency, but even without the rain it felt like there was barely any sand in the bunkers.

No GPS on the carts, so I was glad I had my golf app and a rangefinder. Didn't see a beverage cart either, and it was starting to heat up around 10:30am on the back nine when the sun started shining through. The handful of par 4s played pretty long from the white tees, I don't often see 400+ yard par 4s from white. This was balanced by the par 3s all being in the shorter 110-130 yd range. The course has two different personalities, with the front nine being fairly flat with some water hazards, and the back nine a little more hilly in a canyon.

Pace of play was 4 hrs and 4 minutes. We couldn't keep up with the group in front of us, but the group behind us were only waiting for us on a couple of holes.


The course is a decent value these days. The range is packed. I believe that members that pay a monthly fee get a deal for a free bucket of balls any time they go to the course. The range does have Trackman cameras going if you want to download their app. I hope not to wait 20 years before playing this course again.

Out early on what I suspect is going to be another hot day, which is just more reason to get out early. However, it seems everybody had the same idea because it was packed at 5:30 in the morning. Greens were the best part of the course, but they were much slower than I recall them being. Overall, good coverage in the fairways. Bunkers were not yet maintained and were mostly compacted dirt/mud. Areas around the bunkers were in need of trimming. Missed not seeing Ruth in the pro shop today, but staff was friendly and helpful.

Played in a charity event on Sat. All I want to say is if I paid $180 rack rate I would have been mad at the conditions.

The fairways were a mix of brown and green grass, some bare areas, but the worst was they must not have been mowed in at least a week. So many different lengths depending on where you ended up in the fairway; it truly was a crapshoot. Rough was not much different. The marshal said that in the last 2 weeks the course really went brown. They do water the heck out of it, as there were muddy spots here and there. Sand traps seemed decent, but we were in a scramble, so we did not play from them. Greens were the highlight as they were lush and soft, rolling at a medium pace. Not too many ball marks either.

Staff were very friendly and really helped run a 120-person shotgun. Bev carts came around at least 4 times, Water coolers were abundantly available, and the carts were good with a nice GPS.

For the rate they charge its hard to swallow the conditions right now. Course needs a mow at least.

Played early this AM. Beautiful morning for golf.

Course was very very damp as we have hot weather coming so lots of water being put on the course. That was the only negative of the round.

Tee boxes were just great.

Fairways are lush with great lies all round but just no rollout.

Rough was sticky and wet and tough to play out of.

Traps all clean and lucky to stay out of them as they all looked damp.

Greens were mowed in front of me so we had great chipping putting all round which was great.

Excellent service in the pro shop.

This was the first stop on my buddy and I's western Washington/Seattle area golf trip. We stayed at his grandparent's place in Fall City, and teed off at The Home Course at 9:15 the next morning. I had only heard good things about this place going in, but it only got better once we actually arrived.

Views - 17/20
Upon entering the course, I immediately understood that this course was going to be very nice. The big black gates out front, the course name in big steel lettering, and the landscaping lining the driveway were just the first impression of what we were getting into. The course itself featured simple, yet beautifully pure landscapes. It felt as if I was walking through a page of Golf Digest. If I had to describe the overall look of the course in two words, it would be modest prestige. It did not feature anything absolutely breathtaking or jaw dropping, but the attention to detail in the small things made me feel right at home.

Service - 19/20
The service we received at The Home Course was excellent and felt genuine. The two in the pro shop were very kind and told us everything we needed to know. They felt like they really cared about us having a good experience. The starter/marshal also turned out to be a decent guy. At first I thought he was going to be upset with us because we didn't know where the first tee was, and he had to come up to the putting green to find us. It also turned out we were the pacing twosome that day, so no pressure. Luckily there was a slow foursome behind us, so we had no trouble keeping up pace. In the fairway of hole 7 we saw him driving up toward us, and immediately I began racking my brain to think of what we must have done wrong. Instead of lecturing us though, he told us we were doing great on pace, asked how we were liking the course, and where we were from. Overall, he was the one who made round.

Condition - 18/20
The Home Course's condition was top tier. The fairways were perfect, lined with a thicker than usual rough, and tall fescue. The bunkers were soft, with the greenside ones being sod-lined, something I personally don't see very often at home. The greens rolled great, with challenging breaks that are definitely a factor in your approach. The course did feature trees, but most the time they weren't really a factor. Off the tee it was quite open, then challenging around the greens, which I loved.

Clubhouse - 18/20
I really liked the clubhouse at The Home Course. There were two strikingly white, modernized colonial-style buildings with black accents. The clubhouse felt like a statement piece, as they all should be. It told me that this course was going to be very good quality, but that I could also sit down and have a drink with my friends after the round and enjoy the view and the company. The only downsides were that it was relatively small, and I wish the restaurant and pro shop could have been connected. Overall an amazing building, definitely one of my favorites.

Practice Facilities - 17/20
First off, we did not arrive early enough to use the range, but from a distance I could tell that it was grass and had plenty of bays, which is all I can ask out of a range. The putting green was very large, and had every kind of break that you would find on the course. On top of that, there was a smaller putting green right next to the first tee, just in case you're held up and need to kill some time or work something out. Either way, this was a very nice touch. The chipping green also looked excellent. It featured 3 giant bunkers to practice sand shots, and 3 pins on the green itself. Overall very good, and featured everything you would need to get an effective practice session.

The Home Course - 8.9/10
I really enjoyed my round at The Home Course. If I lived in the area I would heavily consider looking into a membership there, and I am definitely going to play it again next summer!

Back out again this week at E course for early round before heat arrives. $47 w cart for Sr is a decent price IMO given the conditions of this course.

Tee boxes all clean and playable.

Fairways great coverage with good lies and rollout even though the course was damp early AM.

Rough was high and difficult to advance very far with the grass length and dampness.

Traps all damp and some with standing water from overnight watering but not in any so all OK.

Greens were being mowed in front of us and we never had a damp green to putt on. Made for good chipping/putting all round.

Excellent customer service in the shop.

Recommended if you are in the area or visiting.

Our second event of 2026 at The Oaks Club at Valencia was again a success. The playing conditions are much improved from 2024-2025. I was informed playing conditions are a higher priority than in past years with the superintendent of Valencia CC (sister course across the highway) playing an active role in addition to the current turf management team. GDR23 provides an excellent breakdown in his review I agree with. Summed up, The Oaks Club at Valencia provided smooth, medium-speed greens (a little wet in spots due to the heat wave) and holding shots. I was impressed with the fairways in particular. The reason I held off on booking an event in 2025 was because of the dry, browning fairways we experience in the summer of 2024. Well, that’s been resolved. The summer fairways were in great shape. Lush, firm and providing excellent lies. The rough had some thin spots but overall lush and cut down to 3 inches. Bunkers were in good shape with quality sand. The tee boxes were level, mostly lust with some moderate divot damage. Overall, the course was in great shape.

From an event organizer standpoint, The Oaks Club at Valencia has an terrific staging area featuring a large driving range, practice putting, practice short-game, clubhouse, snack-bar and cart staging area all conveniently located in close proximity to each other.

I am already looking in to booking a couple events for 2027. Recommended!

I finished my marathon of golf in July with a course that is in my top 5 out of the 512 courses I have played in my 43 years of "looking for my ball", Rams Hill. The only 9 is the fairways. 10's all around. Regarding fairways, I admit I am spoiled. The best fairways are in Japan where the 4 seater carts never go in the fairways. But given the fact that carts ride in the fairways at Rams Hill the fairways are in wonderful shape. It is like playing on carpet. I felt bad for taking a divot and running out of sand fill. The greens are slow this time of year. They run at a 9 on the stimp meter. The ball rolled so true. You just have to give it a little extra. The staff is friendly. I received electro-lite powder, shaved ice, and frozen grapes while playing. Perfect in the 110 degree heat. The game is definitely easier when conditions are this nice.
